This sounds reasonable

Some fellow Republicans criticized Donald Trump’s remarks on Tuesday, in which he returned to blaming “both sides” for the deadly violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, while others instead broadly denounced bigotry, signs of a possible rift among elected Republicans.

No elected officials went so far as to defend Trump outright after his comments, including his insistence that some of those participating in a “Unite the Right” protest against the removal of a statue of Robert E Lee in Charlottesville were not neo-Nazis or white supremacists.

If they’re trying to unite the right then one would rather assume that they’re trying to unite different factions, racists, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and other groupuscules on the right as well. Unite the left does mean that all from social democrats through to the Stalinists, doesn’t it?

Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, the leader of the moderate Tuesday group who also didn’t back Trump in 2016, shared this criticism. He tweeted “@POTUS must stop the moral equivalency! AGAIN, white supremacists were to blame for the violence in #Charlottesville.”

Actually, as far as I’ve seen at least, the car incident was the result of someone with rather more issues that just being a fascist activist – which he also appears to have been – :

Fields, according to records from the Florence Police Department in Kentucky, was previously accused of beating his mother and threatening her with a knife in 2011. The mother, Samantha Bloom, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, told police he stood behind her wielding a 12-inch knife.

Bloom said that in another incident in 2010, Fields smacked her in the head and locked her in the bathroom after she told him to stop playing video games. Bloom told officers Fields was on medication to control his temper.

My initial, and near entirely uninformed of course, thought would be nutter who has found a cause rather than the other way around. We also have reasonably good evidence that the vast majority there were not in fact murderous. There were, as many have noted, rather a lot of guns around and so far at least I’ve not heard about any gunfire and certainly not of any gunfire injuries.

Yes, of course neo-Nazis are pinheads but heavily armed idiots not opening fire does tell us something.

  1. The reporting on the BBC has been disgraceful.

    – “Trump has said there is a moral equivalent between the ‘far right’ and the ‘left'” – No he hasn’t, he’s said the far left and far right are both to blame for violence.

    – “the ex leader of KKK has welcomed Trumps remarks” – true but Trump is on record many times as disavowing the KKK and that man in particular and that second point is never made.

In general, critics of Trump are given a platform to say what they think while supporters are quizzed and challenged.

The fact that the protesters against the taking down of the statue had applied for and been given a permit for their protest seems lost.

The BBC this morning was chuntering on about how the far right had been ‘tooled up’ for a fight – and, what, the far left just found a pile of pepper spray and baseball bats lying around when they arrived?!

I think Trump comes across as an oaf and it almost goes without saying that the far right hold vile views but the reporting is getting f’ing ridiculous.

  2. It seems the ‘Black lives matter’ is ok even when they riot and burn but if whites start to look out for themselves it’s’ tut tut’ and “Nazis”.

  3. Most of the protestors were neither KKK nor supporters of national SOCIALISM but white folk who have had a gutful of the left.

As is usual at these events there were plenty of BluSlugs and even National Guard. Until the undocumented–no “permit” seemingly being needed by those dross– Antifa Marxian scum kicked off at which point the blue gang took a coffee break.

Had they kept the two groups apart then the car incident would likely never have happened.

Assuming that there is any truth in the leftist narrative bullshit which far too many swallow right off the bat.

Including our host so it seems.

  4. > the far left just found a pile of pepper spray and baseball bats lying around when they arrived?!

That’s their story, and they’re sticking to it. The bloke photographed with a make-shift flamethrower claims that “he fought back with a spray can he said he found on the ground, putting a lighter to the nozzle and turning it into a weapon” (as reported by the Independent).

  5. Andrew C,

“I think Trump comes across as an oaf and … the reporting is getting f’ing ridiculous.”

Perhaps those two points aren’t entirely unconnected?

  6. Mr Ecks: It’s much, much funnier than that.

In this incident, those hundreds of real Americans who respect (as any decent person does) General Lee were protected from violent communists, queers, and other uh, hyphenated Americans, by ‘Nazis’. Mostly not actual Nazis, but yup, there were dudes with red, white and blue hakenkreuz and boneheads in Slayer tshirts.

So there you are. Hundreds of decent Americans, multiplied by however many other decent Americans they tell about it, and however many other decent Americans those folks tell about, now know that American heritage is hated by the government, opposed by the police, and that the people with the balls to protect them against scum throwing bodily fluids and acid are the evil ‘Nazis’.

Should go well for the commies, we haven’t seen this sort of thing before anywhere.

    +1

  8. ‘Unite the left does mean that all from social democrats through to the Stalinists, doesn’t it?’

Clearly you have not been paying attention, anyone who is not a Stalinist is Extreme Right wing these days.

Social Democracy… that is just weasel-word code for Socialism/Fascism by stealth (how to boil a frog), eg the EU.

  9. The idea that even though the Nazi protesters are assholes, the masked commie counter-protesters who came after them with bats are also assholes is apparently too subtle for anyone other than Trump to grasp.

  10. The face-off (apart from the vehicular attack) reminded me strongly of aggro between Millwall and Chelsea 30+ years ago, except that it appears there are a hell of a lot more Millwall fans than there are neo-Nazis in the whole of the USA.
