Just such fun!

I’d probably put myself down as someone who likes free markets, and hang around a people with similar views to my own.

I haven’t met a single person who truly believes in ‘zero regulation’ or zero state involvement (eg to prevent monopolies). Not one. The issue usually comes down to unique personal preferences on where to draw the line. You say tomayto, I say tomarto, that kind of argument.

Can you nominate any serious commentator one who actually believes in zero regulation or zero state involvement? I’m not asking you to name nutters – but people generally taken seriously.

Try reading US think tank output and James Buchanan

Do not forget that our Spudda is a prof of political economy:

Buchanan was largely responsible for the rebirth of political economy as a scholarly pursuit

  1. The Nobel winning James Buchanan of public choice theory?

“Buchanan identified as a socialist in his youth and was unaware of the University of Chicago’s strong market-oriented approach to economics. His studies there, particularly under Frank H. Knight, converted him to “a zealous advocate of the market order”.”

  2. “The British journalist, Alistair Cooke, commenting on the Nobel Prize awarded to James M. Buchanan in 1986, reportedly summarized the public choice view of politicians by saying, “Public choice embodies the homely but important truth that politicians are, after all, no less selfish than the rest of us.”

    No wonder Snippa despises him

  3. Bloke in North Dorset

There’s some great defence of, and insight in to, Buchanan on Bleeding Heart Liberals following Nancy MacLean’s hachet job on him in her book Democracy in Chains. It’s the sort of stuff that anyone interested in the political economy would have been across.

The fact that to the best of my knowledge, and Google-fu, he hasn’t mentioned that book means that he’s once again plucking stuff out of his arse. Has he ever done any research on the subject he’s supposed to be a professor of?

  4. @bind “Has he ever done any research on the subject he’s supposed to be a professor of?” – your’e having a laugh ! – he gets his insights from his own genius whilst perched on the bog. Every time has has a dodgy meal his blog output rises dramatically.

  5. Murphy’s response is known, in the actual sciences, as “hand-waving”, and generally you’re not allowed to get away with it.

  6. It doesn’t follow that if there is zero state involvement there is zero regulation. But If there is state involvement who regulates the state?
