A deal with the FDP and the Greens is Mrs Merkel’s only realistic coalition option, but the parties disagree on issues including energy, taxation, Europe and migration, complicating the path to a so-called “Jamaica” coalition – a reference to the parties’ respective colours: black, yellow and green.
On Wednesday, the Green Party said it would refuse an “upper limit” to the number of refugees entering the country.
A massive shift in voting against immigration. Leading to government allowing more immigration.
Doesn’t coalition politics reflect the will of the people so much better?
That’s why democracy is “the tyranny of the majority.”
Democracy only works when people agree on the big picture and disagree on the details. It doesn’t work when people disagree on the big picture.
Anything that helps undermine the Fat Cow is good.
Have the Dutch formed a government yet?
At least in Germany people who voted ADF are represented in parliament – unlike UKIP voters in 2015
Doesn’t coalition politics reflect the will of the people so much better?
But this is not a problem with coalitions so much as the Will of the People. The people voted for the Wrong Sort of People. That is, the AfD. The mainstream parties are refusing to do a deal with them. The sensible option would be for Merkel and the CDU to go into coalition with the AfD. Perhaps with the FDP as well. A four party coalition would be workable. If enough AfD members walk out after their crypto-lesbian leader, would Merkel be willing to strike a deal with them?
But they have ruled the mainstream AfD out. Because they have rejected the will of the people, they have to find some baroque alternative.
Blind panic has broken out in Bavaria amongst the CSU. Their chief, Horst Seehofer has complained of being “outflanked” on the right by the AfD and is saying that he is going to play hard-ball with Merkel on immigration or refuse to enter the coalition.
The CSU scored nearly 39% of the vote and won every constituency in Bavaria, but this is a party that used to score 50+ and less than 45% was going to be a v. bad result.
The whole point of the AfD is NOT to be in government, they are going to “hunt” Merkel ( as opposed to the SPD who are going to smack her in the gob ). Going into government will immediately invalidate the AfD’s mandate.
p.s. Frauke Petry had a baby recently – by a man ! She knows that this kind of overt heterosexuality is frowned upon amongst modern female politicians, but she still used the kid in her posters.
Bloke no Longer in Austria – “The whole point of the AfD is NOT to be in government, they are going to “hunt” Merkel ( as opposed to the SPD who are going to smack her in the gob ). Going into government will immediately invalidate the AfD’s mandate.”
Yes but isn’t Frauline Petry’s point that the AfD does not want power and she finds that irresponsible? Hasn’t she left them precisely because she wants to be in office?
“p.s. Frauke Petry had a baby recently – by a man !”
I am impressed! Actually for a crypto-lesbian I have to say I find her mildly attractive. Is it perhaps le Vice Anglais at work? Who is to say? But I am glad she is doing her bit for the gene pool. Admittedly she has a while to go before catching up with Ursula von der Leyen but she may have some time.
Ex-Austrian
I think SMFS was confusing Petry with the current co-leader, Alice Weidel, who is indeed a lesbian, but one who fails to conform to the modern progressive’s definition of how they should think and behave.
The “upper limit” is a total red herring
There can’t be one without changing the constitution and that isn’t going to happen.
What needs to change (and already has) is Merkel going out and inviting very much non-refugees in. She has stopped doing that and will be deposed the second she starts again. The worry is the greens might start doing it unilaterally and continue to block additions to the “safe country list” and continue to block legal deportation.

Petry dish?

Van der Leyen was on CNN the other day, saying as how this wasn’t the moment to start listening to AfD’s supporters, but to try and convince them that the government is right. Bloody hell.
I quite fancy Frauke Petry and I think she talks a lot of sense. Her plan was to turn the AfD into a successful version of UKIP. The anti-immigration cause has attracted working-class voters who might have gone to the Leftists.
Alice Weidel is not bad either…. I really must stop watching those sorts of films…

Which at least has moved the window from “they are Nazis and we will never engage with them”. It’s a sort of concession, I suppose.
Having four kids and marrying two men is taking the crypto-lesbian thing a bit far, I feel.
