Darcey Bussell is unavailable for comment

The ongoing saga of Harvey Weinstein has led to an outpouring of stories exposing the epidemic of sexual exploitation and harassment in an array of industries, with the Bolshoi the latest to be implicated.

Speaking to the Daily Beast, former prima ballerina Anastasia Volochkova has claimed that the Bolshoi has become “a giant brothel”, with ballerinas providing sexual services to the theatre’s oligarch patrons. She had previously claimed in 2013 that “Girls… take turns… going to a party, with dinner and a follow-up, in bed, and going all the way.”

The bombshell report goes onto state that Volochkova’s allegation is slightly overblown, stressing that ballerinas are reportedly given the choice as to whether they wish to take part in sexual activity with patrons.

They’ve been making jokes about Bolshoi ballerinas sleeping with the boss class since the Tsars. Right through the Politburo days. In a goodly enough number of cases not even jokes, just observations.

That it’s organised might be a little different, as is alleged here. But a constantly rotating cast of fit young birds coming up from the provinces, paid appallingly (corps de ballet, as with the chorus in other forms of musical theatre, ain’t paid well), hmm, we’re surprised it turns into a girlfriend farm for rich old blokes?

There was at least one English Duchess who got her start this way. As did Emma Hamilton. And Nell Gwynn. Add in that this is Russia…..

  1. “…exposing the epidemic of sexual exploitation and harassment in an array of industries…”

Funny there isn’t such a slew of reports coming from the oil industry, local waste management services, the coal industry, engineering, etc.

  2. And the Paris ballet in the 19th century. Subscribers got access to all areas of the Opera house which allowed them to go and proposition the dancers.

  3. Funny there isn’t such a slew of reports coming from the oil industry, local waste management services, the coal industry, engineering, etc.

That’s because, for obvious reasons, young pretty women are so desperate to sleep with the male engineers working therein that no coercion or harassment is necessary.

  4. “…. with ballerinas providing sexual services to the theatre’s oligarch patrons.”

What could these oligarchs possibly have in common with Weinstein?

  5. So Much For Subtlety

Anastasia Volochkova? If she scraped some of that make up off? Would.

Darcy Bussel? I would be surprised if there was a single heterosexual man in the British Ballet who had enough red blood left to make the effort.

  6. I should have mentioned that I’m not part of the British ballet scene, just defending Ms Bussell’s honour.

  7. That’s how my grandmother got her start. She moved from Ireland to London when she was 16 (in about 1906) and got a job with the Tiller Girls. She got knocked up by a wealthy married businessman. They set up home together. Job jobbed.

  8. I suspect that a great advantage of being a female ballet dancer is that you are so anorexic that your periods stop, rendering you able to be shagged a full 28 days a month!

That puts your vagina on a par with the anuses of the ‘male’ dancers … great for sexual equality!

  9. Performing artists screwing the patrons has been going on since almost the beginning of performing arts. It’s only latterly that we’ve tried to pretend otherwise. So long as it is consensual then no-one cares.

A cynic might suggest the only reason so many are complaining about this coming to light is that it reminds them them that their profession isn’t as far from removed from the whores they despise as they like to pretend.

  10. Mr Womby: They’re both rather well-preserved for their age.

Didn’t one of Wagner’s operas have its Paris debut ruined because he stuck the ballet segment in the first act instead of the second, thus forcing the top Parisian sporting-men’s club to cut their dinner short before showing up to play ‘fuck, marry, kill’ in the boxes?

  11. Tbh, I suspect that most of the Royal Ballet’s patrons were rather more keen on Darcey’s handsome hunk of an Aussie husband….

  12. All of the media noise is an attempt to twist the “lying Hollywood leftist sex antics in the land of mouthy feminism” revelations into a (Western) worldwide “All men are pigs” narrative . And thus muddy the waters and avoid the spotlight falling on leftist hypocrites who spew femmi-garbage but shag and get shagged in the old-fashioned way.

  13. Bloke in Costa Rica

The actress/whore distinction is of comparatively recent vintage, and even then it’s more honoured in the breach than the observance.
