I fear Ms. Bennett does not understand

Although, unlike his efforts on behalf of global environmental and nuclear catastrophe, Trump’s alliance with the NRA endangers principally his compatriots, this staggering acceptance of the latest homegrown massacre could be what finally – if it cannot guarantee pariah status – shreds US claims to global leadership. A country that accepts 93 firearms deaths a day, on a wayward reading of an 18th-century statute, is not obviously better placed than the ostracised Aung San Suu Kyi to lecture on human rights or, as Trump at the UN, on global security. He fretted about “rogue regimes” that even threaten “their own people with the most destructive weapons known to humanity”. Idiots. Don’t they know over-the-counter semi-automatics will do the job perfectly well?

It really isn’t the guns. It’s the people.

The Czech Republic has similar levels of gun ownership. It doesn’t have the same incidents. It is therefore something other than the availability of the guns.

The 18th century statute is fun too, no? Freedom of religion, speech, rights to trial and all that? Just 18 th century statute we can cast aside?

  1. Women got the vote one hundred years ago, it’s clearly out of date and needs to change to be modern. Actually, this whole democracy thing is a really old idea, we need. Something more progressive like what Pol Pot tried back in the 70’s perhaps?

  2. The Unused Testicle

Of course, if I used this type of argument – it’s the last straw! we must have action! – with regard to terrorism, Ms Bennett would shout racist and want me locked up.

  3. Knowing that Trump winds her up that badly (and what a humourless article that is) makes me happy about Trump

  4. “It’s the people.”

    More accurately, the culture.
(In many cultures, immediate widespread gun ownership would be a disaster.)

And the type of guns available?

  5. Gun type has nothing to do with it.

Start conceding shite like that and you will end up conceding it all.

Of all the pukes that the left–and general cowardice/scuminess –produce, I hate the gun controllers the most.

Gutless vermin who peddle their sanctimonious bullshit while not giving a damn about millions upon millions butchered by their scumbuddy the state.

It is only left to hope that one day these pukes will find themselves in a situation where the possession of a firearm might save their life–and that they live long enough to feel the bitter pangs of suffering that their own gutless pacifism and leftist evil has brought them.

  6. I think it’s easiest to compare small areas in America with widely diverging rates of gun crime.

Minneapolis, Minnesota has rapidly increasing gun crime. Gun crime seems to be increasing as the population of people with black hair increases. Other parts of Minnesota have less people with black hair, and more people with blonde hair, and less gun crime. I understand Czechia also has many blonde haired people, and less gun crime.

I conclude that people with black hair should be banned from owning guns. Don’t call me a Nazi- this policy would have banned Hitler from owning guns.

  7. Confused as to whether Bennett believes the evil in our midst is guns, white men or democratic debate?

  8. Blacks and Hispanics are 75% or so of gun crime felons. White America really is as peaceful as white France or Germany.

  9. My first year in a large American city coincided with 400 deaths, primarily from guns. It was largely one bunch of bad guys shooting at another, with a significant contribution from law enforcement. The principal danger to civilians is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Likewise my experience as a long-time resident of South London, nut-job Islamists notwithstanding.

  10. Paul Rain, don’t know if the data is available but it would be interesting to find out for which political party those mass shooters are registered to vote. I’m fairly confident that none of them were NRA members.

A country that accepts 93 firearms deaths a day, on a wayward reading of an 18th-century statute, is not obviously better placed than the ostracised Aung San Suu Kyi to lecture on human rights

Heh. Stupid Americans. (Bomb explodes on Tube) Why can’t they (acid flung in face) be more (1,400 little girls get raped) civilised, (British soldier beheaded in broad daylight) like us?
(vehicle ploughs into crowd of pedestrians, Arhchbishop of Canterbury calls for Sharia, police rush to arrest people who joke about Islam on the internet)

  12. Not sure the black gangs in Chicago posess many legal firearms. Gun control won’t stop or even slow the horrific rate of black-on-black murder in Chicago and other US cities, but the Left doesn’t give a fuck about that and never has.

  13. To echo Bernie G, legalise narcotics in America and you’ll get rid of at least 80% of all gun homocides.

  14. On gun ownership rates, Wiki has the US and the Czech Republic at 112 and 16 respectively per 100 residents.

So I was wondering where your estimate that the rates are similar originates?

  15. The Czech Republic is the only place where I’ve seen a “No Handguns” sign on the door to a strip club. I was surprised as it seemed like a classy joint.

  16. “To echo Bernie G, legalise narcotics in America and you’ll get rid of at least 80% of all gun homocides.”

    You have been tricked.

What you say is true, but it shows Bennett’s trick worked.

‘A country that accepts 93 firearms deaths a day’

She is throwing in SUICIDES. The rate for homicide by firearms discharge is 30 a day. BWTM. If you exclude black male homicides, the rate is 13.7 per day. Out of 288,000,000 people.

Which begs the question, “What is the acceptable rate?” When she says ‘accept,’ she is implying that you must accept her demands, else you are “accepting” the deaths.

I’m always amazed that Leftards think we should sacrifice our rights over a number. A statistic. A statistic that they will fake.

“I’m not going to give up my rights because there are 93 firearms deaths a day, but if it gets to a 100, you can have all my guns.”

The New York Times tells a hundred lies a day. Is that enough for them to lose their 1st Amendment rights?

  17. “The New York Times tells a hundred lies a day. Is that enough for them to lose their 1st Amendment rights?”

    Bad analogy.

The New York Times tells a hundred lies a day. Is that enough for Washington Post to lose their 1st Amendment rights?

The Left wants to take away the rights of those who DIDN’T commit the crime.

  18. it’s curious that on what is largely an economics blog, when the subject of gun control laws comes up, hardly anyone mentions markets.
Let’s start with something simple. The problem can’t be about possession of guns, because there doesn’t seem to be much connection between how relaxed gun control laws are & the propensity of people to use guns to harm others. Tim cites the CR, but there’s plenty of other countries in the world are easygoing about the ownership of firearms have relatively low gun murder rates.
And the US experience shows the same thing. Many of the states with the most permissive gun restrictions also have the lowest gun crime. Many of the states suffer high gun crime also have the most restrictive gun laws.
People who wish to harm people with guns do so with guns. Meaning they have to obtain guns.
Rob points out above, the black gangs in Chicago don’t possess many legal firearms. Chicago has strict gun control laws. But they still have plenty of guns. There’s a market that supplies them.
Now we know, from the experience with illegal narcotics, markets clear. Remarkably well. The street-price of dope seems almost totally divorced from the authorities’ attempts to interdict the supplies. More shipments are seized, scarcity causes street prices to rise, more traffickers see an advantage in higher profits & shift more gear. More supplies on the streets, prices fall. You’re back where you started.
WTF wouldn’t this be the same with guns? If people wish to buy guns there will be a market in guns. Irrespective of whether it’s a legal or illegal market the bad guys will get their guns.
And another lesson could be learned from drugs. Where there’s a profit to be made, people will move in to make a profit. There’s a plentiful supply of drugs on the streets because there’s a good profit to be made by selling them. Drug pushers aren’t called drug pushers without reason. They’re not philanthropists. It’s in their interest there are more drug users & they do their very best to create more.
    Join the dots….

  19. Bernie G.

I was wondering if you might have got better at it with a year’s experience under your belt…

    Sorry.

  20. To echo Bernie G, legalise narcotics in America and you’ll get rid of at least 80% of all gun homocides.

It’s a common misconception that all these black on black murders are happening because organized gangs are fighting over drug dealing turf and they’d stop offing each other if drugs were legal. The rather depressing fact of the matter is that most ghetto murders have nothing to do with drug dealing turf, they happen for incredibly trivial personal reasons. These days, it’s usually someone saying something about someone else on social media.

  21. ‘If people wish to buy guns there will be a market in guns. Irrespective of whether it’s a legal or illegal market the bad guys will get their guns.’

True. And in a country that has 150 million guns, it’s juvenile to think you can keep an adult who isn’t locked up from getting a gun.

The Lefties say they are trying to make it hard for bad guys to get guns, but their only tool is to make it hard for the law abiding to get guns.

  22. bis,

‘drug pushers’ is a made up thing.
Every dealer I have ever known (and I’ve known a few) has been incapable of keeping up with demand, Customers are constantly scouting for supplies and any new availability is quickly exhausted because word spreads fast.

  23. Mr Ecks – there’s no pacifism on the part of the gun grabbers. Quite the opposite – they want us disarmed so as to be less able to resist their modern day SA, antifa.

  24. ‘Men previously unmoved by the murder of tiny children at Sandy Hook, then of the young people out dancing in Orlando’

Ms Bennett, what is your evidence for such? Failure to agree with you?

  25. Point of information

Wiki seems to think Czech ownership of hundreds per 100 people Is 16 vs 112 for the USA

So they have way fewer guns and a different culture

  26. “So they have way fewer guns and a different culture”

The key is still the culture, not the number of guns.
