Retail sales sink to record lows but Primark defies the squeeze on shoppers

Without even looking at the article we know this is bollocks. Retail sales are not lower than in 1900, in 1950, in 1990 even. It could be that they’ve grown very slowly, possibly they’ve even fallen more than in any other reporting period. But they’re not at record lows you innumerate arts graduates.

  1. New figures show British high street struggled in October as non-food sales suffer worst performance since the BRC’s records began in 2011

    So, the lowest in 5 or 6 years. Excuse me if I don’t panic.

    How about online sales? Haven’t they gone up to compensate? I don’t subscribe, so I can’t see if that is addressed.

  2. Why worry? Retail sails are still higher than the ones records in 25,000 BC.

    That was a really shit year for knitwear.

  3. On the BBC this morning it was lowest GROWTH (0.1%, I think) since err… 2009. Or something.
    Oh! The horror!

    I’ve just written about the BBC’s coverage of this elsewhere. It was just a regurgitation of the BRC’s pre budget special pleading press release, with no value add.

    They didn’t even question growth in internet sales nor whether or not that money has been spent elsewhere because it appears people decided to spend the October half term out doing stuff rather sitting in shopping malls.

    As I mentioned there, does anyone remember a time when the BRC didn’t make special pleading press releases at budget time?

    I can understand, but not forgive, poor journalism in commercial operations under time pressure, but the BBC justifies the unique way its funded by claiming at has a remit to educate as well. Regurgitating press releases is not educating and the sooner they are replaced by machine learning the better, at least the licence fee could be reduced.

    Indeed. I rely on the Today programme to know where I need to be in my morning routine. But the last two days it has been utterly unlistenable-to. It’s been nothing but idiotic drivel about the Paradise Papers or the usual ‘Trump is a moron’ crap.

    @Phil Scot Tom,

    My American boss can’t stop droning on about trump is a moron. We’ve come close to blows over it, not because trump isn’t a moron, but because he is so obviously a moron that we learn nothing from repeating the fact.
