I have heard countless stories like this. Every time a case like the Allan one comes up, it would be easy to assume that scores of women are falsely reporting rape as some sort of revenge or leisure activity, and that our prisons are full of men who are innocent of crimes against women and girls. Bearing in mind that only 6% of rape cases end up with a rape conviction for rape in this country, that would mean that 94% of women thatwho report it are lying, that would mean a vast number of women are lying. If the same amount of fuss was made about every bungled police investigation and criminal trial involving sexual assault where the accused walked free, it would be impossible for the press and social media to keep up.
No, not true. Only 6% of rape allegations end up with a conviction. Not far off the general clear up rate for many other crimes.
Perhaps more importantly, some 6% or so of rape allegations turn out to be false ones. That’s not a hard number but about the best we’ve got.
It’s a difficult subject but using the case of someone who was undoubtedly being railroaded into a rape conviction as an argument that other prosecutions are bungled in favour of the defence ain’t the way to do it. You know, that 100 guilty go free rather than one innocent get jugged?
