What a surprise!

Earth’s surface will almost certainly not warm up four or five degrees Celsius by 2100, according to a study which, if correct, voids worst-case UN climate change predictions.

A revised calculation of how greenhouse gases drive up the planet’s temperature reduces the range of possible end-of-century outcomes by more than half, researchers said in the report, published in the journal Nature.

“Our study all but rules out very low and very high climate sensitivities,” said lead author Peter Cox, a professor at the University of Exeter.

Won’t stop people claiming that Flipper will be boiled in the remains of the last ice floe by 2100 of course.

Surprise, surprise. Some of us have been saying this since the 1980s.

It is incredible how much money – and opportunities for doing something good for the environment – has been p!ssed away on this [email protected]

  2. “Our study all but rules out very low and very high climate sensitivities,”

And this study is as crap as the others, being similarly based on assumptions and insufficient information.

“Findings should not be seen as taking pressure off need to tackle climate change, authors warn.”

    World government still needed!

I’m wondering what will the response be in say forty years’ time when it was abundantly clear that the world was never warming due to human activity in the first place. Will we dig Mongbat up and gibbet him?

  4. Of course it’s not a surprise at all. The new paper gives a range for climate sensitivity (to double of carbon dioxide) of “2.2C to 3.4C, with a best estimate of 2.8C”.

Here‘s an informal survey of thirteen climate scientists who gave their best-guess estimates. Summary: nine of the thirteen gave single numbers or ranges within this new range.

The average of crap is . . . crap.

  6. It seems that climate science is just a variant of that old puzzle “guessing the length of the King of China’s nose”

  7. We can of course simply regard this as a scaling back in anticipation of even better (or worse, for the alarmists) news. The “lukewarmers” have been ploughing this low sensitivity furrow for some time…
