Fruit picker shortage leaves British farmers accepting anyone with ‘two hands and two legs’

A one armed fruit picker might be a bit slow but legs?

An alternative is to raise wages of course…..

  1. Its ReMainiac bullshit.

    How terrible –no EU=no fruit.

Even were that true this country is fruity enough at present.

Of course its bollocks. There aren’t enough workers at the grade z wages Farmer Shite is used to paying is the crux of the issue.

To bad Giles–if you up your wage offer they will come.

  2. Raise wages, I guess? But that would mean fruit was prohibitively expensive, and less people who should be eating it – the poor and obese – will buy the stuff, to the detriment of the public purse (increased demand for NHS services). I suppose we could incentivise the need to accept employment of this sort by cutting benefits, but then we’d need to balance lower incomes with the ready availability of social housing at a peppercorn rent. Quid pro quo. Perhaps we could throw in the towel and import our fruit and veg from Africa; concrete over the farms and build lots of housing? I’ve met a few of the Eastern Europeans who work on neighbourhood farms: many do the work until they find more attractive employment elsewhere; they do that until something even better turns up. Onwards and upwards, as they say. Now the supply of cheap labour appears to be drying up, and as with coal mines, maybe the business has had its day. Vitamin pills anyone?

    but legs?

Yes, legs. It may not be universally understood that the picker needs to be able to move from plant to plant.

  4. So Much For Subtlety

They may have some trouble reaching the fruit if they have no legs.

But on the plus side, isn’t it strawberry season?

I am perfectly happy to have my fruit come from Kenya, or even Spain. As long as the Kenyans stay in Kenya.

  5. Looking at AEP’s doom-laden article in the Torygraph this morning, it seems that Britain’s fruit farmers will soon get their cheap Eastern Europeans back…

  6. So Much For Subtlety

I don’t even mind if the farmers get their coolies back.

As long as Britain retains the legal right to send the f&&kers home.

  7. Tim – not sure if you have seen TRUK this morning – a demand for more peoples QE for the NHS – no surprise there although the return of the deeply sinister Andrew Dickie, the closest thing to a KGB assassin I have seen in a comments page is noteworthy. Also cannot remember if you considered his blatant drive to be made an SNP peer comment worthy?

  8. I might have expected beer drinkers to know that hop-picking was the “holiday” for London working-class a couple of generations ago.
There is no need to import fruit-pickers – the summer school holidays were invented to allow the children to join in harvesting crops. This is an ideological decision.

    Legs not required:

eg modern semi-automated strawberry picking does not require legs. Pickers lie on a platform attached to front of tractor.
