That gender pay gap….

Several of the players at this year’s championships have also spoken of the guilt they feel about leaving their children when they train or play in matches.

Give in to that guilt and you’ll be a better or worse player?

It could go either way. Guilt can drive people to greater things. It can also destroy them.

The other question is guess the sex of the speaker. How many men feel guilty about spending too much time providing for their wives and children?

Sorry this is totally unsuitable and not exactly on topic as well as probably NSFW, but some genius has just committed some of the best research ever:

Most human beings don’t want to be treated like dogs. Yet, a recent Reddit thread suggests some women get more than a little excited if you talk to them as if they were a four-legged furball.

According to the Daily Star, a fair amount of ladies revealed all it takes is two words to make them orgasm while they’re getting it on these days. Those two words? You guessed ’em — good girl.

There is the gender pay gap right there.

  3. Sorry to dampen the jolity.
They’ve been told they can have it all. They believed that. Now they are having trouble facing up to the fact that it was a lie.

I saw this on a twitter feed. The favourite seemed to be

    “hard Brexit”

Strangely enough, I don’t have that much of a problem with equal pay in these big championships. Bums On Seats are the most important thing and as a ladies’ match will be as well attended as a gentlemens’ they are generating the same revenue in fact more so as there will be more matches per day on a court

( or perhaps it doesn’t quite work that way).

  5. How is this different to the guilt many working mothers feel when they’re at work? Just because they’re playing sportsball doesn’t mean they have a harder time.

  6. @Andrew M, it gives the MSM an opportunity to shoehorn the cause du jour into the news story du jour

“(or perhaps it doesn’t quite work that way)”

Indeed. More games, for the same revenue per day (at least with regard to bums on seats), means less revenue attributable per game. Slackers – give them a pay cut..:)

It could be observed that relationship problems are like having sick dog, You can’t ask what’s wrong, so you have to figure it out from the symptoms…

I do. I assume the market is rational and if the girls are not being paid the same it is because they do not play the same. Their skill is much less and their games shorter. Do they get the same attendance? Perhaps.

In fairness I cannot really comment as I rarely watch either the men’s or the girl’s game, but it is invariably the girls when I do. Much less since Gabriella Sabatini retired.

It could. Although where does that line of thought lead us? I am often told by Dog People that there are no bad dogs, only bad owners. So, because here at Casa Subtlety we F*cking Love Science, we are forced to reluctantly agree that women prefer sexist pigs – it would be Denial to agree after all:

So it must therefore follow that if your dog is ill it is because you are not being Benignly Sexist often enough. Obvious really. I think I am going to try “roll over” and maybe even “beg” later in the day. Will keep you posted of the results.

  11. I don’t understand why strong independent tennis wimmin hold joint tournaments in which they are limited to only getting as much as the men.

Why don’t they hold their own wimmin only tournaments like golfers and footballers do?

Then we’d see their true financial clout.

    Oh, yes, I see.

  12. Tim Henman made pretty much the same point as Andrew, although he phrased it more politely by pointing out that the difference in prize money in events below the Slams was much greater. He was pretty roundly criticized for this.

And funny how the whole maternity thing only became an issue when it happened to Serena Williams. Other #1s who became moms (Clijsters, Azarenka, and Davenport come to mind) didn’t get this sort of benefit of the doubt.

  13. ‘Wimbledon’s women players are campaigning for better treatment of working mothers’

No. They aren’t. Out of 256, the Telegraph cites two.

Whah. Whah. Whah. Find a different job.

Is the market in play at Wimbledon, especially on the show courts? You get a ticket well in advance and you’ve no idea who you’re going to see, other for specifics like the opening match and the SF and Final.

What they should do is auction tickets for each match the night before, then we’d get to see what spectators valued. So that won’t happen.

  15. @ BiND
You can’t reschedule your days at an evening’s notice if you’re in a job big enough to pay for Wimbledon tickets so that won’t work.

    Gabriella Sabatini… sigh…

I am thinking of getting a Sky Sports subscription now, since they have started showing netball.

Name six tournaments where women play alongside men.

The four slams and the Olympics are the exceptions, not the norm. The women’s tour otherwise is entirely separate and quite well funded. Basically, you are talking out your a**e.

There’s enormous money in women’s tennis because a lot of rich women like to play tennis. So advertisers love it.

  18. “@SMFS: Well, at least it wasn’t ‘Fetch!’….”

That’s said when they want a sandwich afterwards. 🙂

  19. @Bloke no Longer in Wimbledon

Tickets for men’s semis and final cost more than for woman’s. Womans semis & final have empty seats and much lower TV viewing = less revenue.

  20. The female mind inclines towards narcissism. Hence, women lap up compliments, and “good girl” is a compliment….

  21. Serena is absolutely right. As a working mother it is very ports she plays at a time and in a city that suits her work-life balance.

So she should get to play all her matches at 2pm in L.A. (10pm GMT?) And the tournament organisers and her sponsort should of course pay her exactly the same as before because their first duty with their money is to spend it in the wY the PV Brigade deems fit.

And there was me thinking match times should suit the paying public; cretin.

  22. Or as it was put in the final episode of The Office: “Do you really think anyone else gives a shit about your baby?”

Reminds me of scene in The.Guard.(2011): in car
