Amongst the many things I do not claim to be is a fashion aficionado. If style is your thing then this is probably not the place to be. However, I have been aware since being a teenager that there are some who suggest that the national economic mood can be assessed by the mean skirt length of those who choose to wear them. The shorter the length, the more optimistic the mood is the unsurprising theory.
Sitting in the Eurostar departure area this morning with a sample of hundreds to observe I could not help but notice how much closer to the ankle many hem lengths are when compared to those of recent years. There were exceptions, of course, and I accept the sample is biased. But the portent is not good if the theory holds true.
The federasts – for that is who will be getting onto a train to Brussels early in the morning – are depressed.
There are an increasing number of Muslim Ladiez in our society who tend to dress more conservatively than most.
I imagine that might have an effect on average hem lengths.
My dad lived in London during the sixties and is always keen to reminisce about the mini skirts that were popular back then…
My recollection is that hem lengths shortened in bad times? Like Napolean rodering the Paris Dancing girls to dancy sans skirts? This would mean the opposite of what he means!
Maybe it’s not very warm out so the short skirts are at home in the wardrobe.
Can someone tell the guard that there’s a fat middle-aged bloke on the train staring at women’s legs?
I wonder if this can be used as an excuse for anyone caught looking- it was all for research.
photos or it didn’t happen

This bit of actual research on the subject suggests that hemlines are indeed linked to economic conditions, but have no predictive power – they lag the economy by 2-3 years:
So if hemlines are plunging now, its because things were bad 2-3 years ago. They say nothing about the economy now or in the future.
He can’t even get this right.
“In 2010, Marjolein van Baardwijk and Philip Hans Franses conducted a quantitative analysis on monthly hemline data from 1921 to 2009. Their research verified that the economic cycle leads hemline by about three or four years”
So the longer skirts relate to the economy of 2014 /15.
There is a palpable sense of misery throughout the country Brexit voters look even glummer. It’s hard for them to admit they were wrong about “The easiest negotiation ever” , but they don`t fancy the blame either.
I have been thinking about parallels with interwar Fascism , the attacks on the judiciary , the Nazification of Institutions , the bullying of the media , the odd mix of nutty clap trap and the drive to solve the impoverishment of sovereignty with Empire . It’s all there.
So what happened to women? Well it was “Kinder, Küche, Kirche” ..kind of thing , not much recreational frolic , good solid child bearing . Both in Italy and Germany ( and Spain) Facism seems generally to be against feminism and “variation”
I expect to see pig tails and peasant smocks back soon
Ritchie never deviates from the scientific method, does he?
Newmania – still dribbling about nazis with no recognition of what the nazis actually were and actually did. Pathetic. Obviously upping your meds has not had the desired effect. Time for you to switch off your phone/ipad/pc and go and lie down in a darkened room for a few days and hope that sanity kicks in ( though the prognosis is not good – i think your stupidity may be murphonian – ie terminal)
Its what they didn`t do but had planned that is truly terrifying . Have you read of the Hunger plan for Ukraine ?
I don`t really think Brexit has anything to do with that period , but there are faint echoes
Did see something a while back about style of movies that are being made and the economy, especially the style of horror movie.
Similar to the hemline it’s a reflection of the societal zeitgeist etc.
In crap times people like happy movies or somesuch sort of thing
@newmania -the only echoes from the nazis are on the left – eg no platforming, antifa breaking up (attacking meetings ) calling your opponents as racist or undesirables (ie dehumanising your opponents) – all from the national socialists playbook of the 1930s.
I am unaware of anyones plans to starve any country into submission except in the fevered dreams of remoaners and their constant fearmongering about brexit.
‘Sitting in the Eurostar departure area this morning with a sample of hundreds to observe I could not help but notice how much closer to the ankle many hem lengths are when compared to those of recent years.’
So people riding Eurostar are depressed. Or is it going to the continent that depresses them?
His ‘sample of hundreds’ is actually quite narrow.
Definitely a biased sample, about as useful as observing the hem length of women staggering out of a Newcastle club at 3am and drawing conclusions
“Its what they didn`t do but had planned that is truly terrifying”
A neat summary of why I voted out.
Are there not other economic indicators like skirt length. The sale ice cream was one I think
“I have been thinking about parallels with interwar Fascism , the attacks on the judiciary , the Nazification of Institutions , the bullying of the media , the odd mix of nutty clap trap and the drive to solve the impoverishment of sovereignty with Empire”
And your thoughts have all been bollocks.
@john malpas the sales of new cars used to be one such indicator, but I believe it no longer holds as true as it did back in the 70’s/80’s
