Cat owners have been advised they could risk breaking the law if they force their pets into veganism.

One in six pet food suppliers has branched out into supplying vegan or vegetarian food for animals as owners embraced the new trend over ethical concerns with meat diets.

But yesterday the RSPCA said cats could become seriously ill if given exclusively plant-based diets and owners could run the risk of getting a criminal record.

A spokesman said while dogs were omnivores and could theoretically survive on a vegetarian diet, cats were carnivores and needed meat.

They pointed out: “Under the Animal Welfare Act, the law requires an owner to take reasonable steps to ensure that all the pet’s needs are met.

“This includes a healthy diet, as well as providing suitable living conditions, ability to behave normally, appropriate company and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease.”

Sigh. I refuse to believe that the Portuguese are more advance in these matters than the British. Bags of cat food here might not have meat in them but they then, if they on’t, have a bit on them saying “Contem Taurina”.

Cats are obligate carnivores because they cannot produce the amino acid taurene. They must get it from their food, which therefore must contain taurine and that only comes from animal bits. Or is synthesised of course.

Job done.

  1. Presumably then these cats are never allowed outside, where they will quite happily supplement their own diets.

Maybe vegans have noticed an increase in the rate that their cats disappear, so keep them imprisoned?

  2. Bloke no Longer in Austria

I think it was Punt and Dennis who questioned the logc of cat food.

Why does it contain tuna ? How often do you see a cat with a 5 foot ocean fish in its mouth ? Why dont they make cat food in mangled blackbird flavour ?

  3. I knew someone who’s 2 prize kitties got some liver or kidney problem because he solely fed them on fresh lamb strips for a couple of years. He thought he was providing the best of the best. Would have been very harsh to have prosecuted him for his ignorance.

  4. Cat owners have been advised they could risk breaking the law if they force their pets into veganism

I didn’t have my glasses on and wondered how you’d coax a kitty into vigilanteism.

  5. ‘Owners could run the risk of getting a criminal record.’

Odd legal system you Brits have. The consequences for bad behavior isn’t fines or imprisonment, no, it’s getting a ‘criminal record.’

I assume you are damn skeert of getting a criminal record.

“Maybelle, we can’t hire this guy. He has a criminal record.”

    “What did he do?”

“He fed vegetables to a cat!”

    “Oh, my!

In the U.S., your cellmate would ask, “What are you in for?”

“The bastards nailed me for feeding vegetables to my cat. But I DIDN’T DO IT!”

  6. People have been feeding cats a vegan diet for years. More than the lifetime of cats.
By what owners report it hasn’t affected the cats. The products sold do contain taurine which as Tim says the cats must get in their diet.
Otherwise its a very short lifespan. Blindness, heart problems – and you’d start noticing the problems within just a few months.

The key is taurine – which is normally added to food but can be added to diet separately.

Add that to a diet and the cat lives. Refuse to add it due to your beliefs and the cat goes blind and dies.
Not surprisingly in a nation of animal lovers the needs of the cat can trump ideology.

  7. I doubt that any cat is truly vegan no matter what its owner thinks. I currently have three, non-vegan well fed cats and they still murder any eat passing lizard, mouse, spider or whatever else they can get their claws into.
