With Hinckley Point also in doubt, the UK’s future energy policy is in tatters: the nuclear option is dead because it is technically and financially not feasible.
If ever there was a moment for us to be focussing on what is important in politics to announce a Green New Deal to solve this problem this would be it.
Now show that the Green New Deal is cheaper than nuclear.
A difficult task given that the GND will be funded by the issuance of new money – and how much would nuclear cost us if we did that?
The main risk with nuclear projects is regulatory risk. As such it is one of the few things where I think governments buying a standard model used elsewhere in the world (if you have built 5 elsewhere we will hire you to build one here) is better than striking a deal with a private sector company. The attempt to manage the regulatory risk makes any deal very very complex and inefficient.
True, isp001. Governments can decide to cancel projects for any reason they want to, even after billions have been spent.
Via democratic processes, even the governments change every few years. New governments may not agree to previous governments’ agreements.
Making private investment impossible.
He can’t because he’s got no idea. He’s working on the assumption that any government expediture will generate more tax than the expenditure – a ludicrous proposition seeing as by his logic the government should have no debt rather than the 1.8 trillion . The government can spend itself debt free.
“technically not feasible”? Really? Have you told the good people of Nagasaki that yet?
@ironman – the 450 nuclear plants worldwide don’t actually exist – they are cardboard cut outs disguising 450 billion solar panels. I’ve visited sizewell nuclear power station – they obviously hypnotised me on the way in so that i saw a working nuclear plant rather than the solar panels – also works on google earth – from the satellite pictures you can’t see the solar panels. Next you’ll be telling me that someone pays Murphy for this rubbish – now that would be preposterous.
Moqifen;
‘He can’t because he’s got no idea.’
I always enjoy his contention that there is a multiplier on the back of expenditure on the NHS per se – what the flying f^&k does that mean? I mean to call him mentally unhinged is being generous!
Why isn’t UK buying off the shelf APR-1400s from South Korea?
UAE and South Korea celebrate completion of Barakah’s first nuclear reactor 5,600 megawatts – cost $20Bn
South Korea’s KEPCO shortlisted to bid for Saudi nuclear project
Or Rolls-Royce SMRs?
Elsewhere, slow motion stupidity personified Diane Abbot complains that the BBC QT show is biased against her because something or other.
I don’t think the reactor design is really the issue. It’s that these commercial companies have no way of knowing whether the government will change its mind about nuclear a few years down the road and ruin their massive investment.
The fool can’t even spell “Hinkley” properly.
Now show that the Green New Deal is cheaper than nuclear.
Now show honestly, clearly and competently that the Green New Deal is cheaper than nuclear.
The left will eat itself….

Is it ‘cos I is black?
Abbot playing the race card is contemptible.
Anand Menon (black) was on QT panel too and not laughed at by audience.
