Squaddies are squaddies

Further east than grandpa got”

I’m told this is a real thing.

Could be wrong, but I was under the impression that the Hun (eventually) put a medical unit into Afghanistan, with a protection/security unit attached. Which caused enough internal political grief, what with the post-war constitution and all.

Which the Kraut squaddies promptly added to, getting photographed wearing t-shirts proudly emblazoned with the slogan “further east than grandpa got”.

But in German, obv.

I’m also told that this might be true:

Pcar – so you’re saying that the Battle of Britain Memorial flight has more functioning warplanes than the Luftwaffe!

Lovely!

Both delight for different reasons.

  1. Bloke no Longer in Austria

When the Jerries first turned up in Afghanistan, they sent a Bavarian Jaeger batallion. There was footage of them playing with a skull that they found on an old battlefield.

Austrian TV had a comedy programmes that held a spoof interview with the colonel.

    “What about this skull ?”
“Oh yeah. That was just the lads rehearsing for their upcoming regimental production of Hamlet.”

  2. The brigade HQ t-shirts for the last roulement in Iraq, “Telic XIII – End of an Error”, didn’t go down too well, either.

“aggressive camping” – that was Col Tim Collins politely described German & several other EU’s Armies after joint exercises

  4. Luftwaffe:

2015: “…When only counting the fully operational Typhoons, the number drops . . . to eight…”

2018: “…out of 128 Typhoons, only 38 were airworthy, and only four were in a technical state to actually do any real combat mission…”

Sorry, I’m lost here – perhaps Newmania could drop by to enlighten me?
