Building a wondrous straw man

It is a bewildering and alarming time to be a Jew, both because antisemitism is rising and because so many politicians are responding to it not by protecting Jews but by victimising Palestinians.

On 16 February, members of France’s yellow vest protest movement hurled antisemitic insults at the distinguished French Jewish philosopher Alain Finkielkraut. On 19 February, swastikas were found on 80 gravestones in Alsace. Two days later, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, after announcing that Europe was “facing a resurgence of antisemitism unseen since World War II”, unveiled new measures to fight it.

Among them was a new official definition of antisemitism. That definition, produced by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in 2016, includes among its “contemporary examples” of antisemitism “denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination”. In other words, anti-Zionism is Jew hatred. In so doing, Macron joined Germany, Britain, the United States and roughly 30 other governments. And like them, he made a tragic mistake.

Anti-Zionism is not inherently antisemitic – and claiming it is uses Jewish suffering to erase the Palestinian experience.

The claim isn’t that anti-zionism is inherently anri-semitic. It’s that many anti-semites disguise such under the cloak of anti-zionism.

So Continuity Remainers are racist against the British.

  2. Trying to claim the Yellow Jackets are anti-jewish in a France stuffed with imported RoP would be hilarious were it not pure evil.

Most of the claims against the YJ are very likely the handiwork of Antifa shite or Macron’s own gubmint goons on the agit-prop game.

Note that the Gladrag turd displays a fine concern for the right of lying leftists like himself to speak freely.

  3. I’m quite happy with denying Jewish people self determination. I’m perfectly happy with Israelis having self determination. Whether they’re Jewish or not’s their decision. Their country. Their rules. But Jews in other countries get the same rights as everyone else. Not their own special self-determination
Anything else would be racist, wouldn’t it?

  4. Not just that, but many on the left claim to be “pro-Palestinian, anti-Zionists”, but don’t even think about where the line between genuine protest against the government of Israel ends and anti-semitism begins.

Personally, I think some of the stuff pushed by the Israeli propaganda machine, like the IHRA definition of antisemitism which essentially says any criticism of Israel is anti-semitism, goes too far.

Then again, I’m not being forced to shill for either side, so Meh!

But that’s what you’re going to get when you claim to be a “Jewish State”. Don’t suppose Jews would be over the moon, the UK claiming to be an Anglo-Saxon State and a homeland for the Anglo-Saxon Peoples. Not saying there’s much chance of that 🙁

  6. Okay, but why is it essential that Europe has forced diversity yet we’re supposed to accept that a Jewish ethno state is acceptable because “Reasons…”?

Don’t get me wrong, I carry no torch for either side, but we’re expected to be force fed this line of bullshit because otherwise we’re “literally Hitler”?

    Fuck off.

I’d rather be labelled an anti-semite than a fucking dumb Anglo idiot, happy to be spoon fed propaganda.

  7. The claim isn’t that UKIP/Brexit is inherently racist. It’s that many racists disguise such under the cloak of UKIP/Brexit.

  8. Is there actually any evidence for this, AndrewM. Apart from Remainer propaganda, that is? There’s little doubt that Labour is racist. Proudly so in the Abbotapotamus’s case. But UKIP?

  9. “The claim isn’t that anti-zionism is inherently anri-semitic. ”

It sort of is. And most anti-Zionism is inherently anti-semitic, even if not explicitly so.

I’m not hearing these people calling for the rights of Kashmiris to escape Indian ‘occupation’, Papuans the same against Indonesians, etc., etc. No it’s just the Jewish state that gets called out.

  10. Maybe because the Kashmiris aren’t as hypocritical as the Israelis?

The government of the state of Israel is often calling out other countries for attitudes that they themselves express don’t apply to them for “Reasons” (like having a Jewish ethnostate is fine, but not an Anglo/Saxon one).

However, obviously I am “Worse than Hitler” for saying so.

    😐

  11. John – Okay, but why is it essential that Europe has forced diversity yet we’re supposed to accept that a Jewish ethno state is acceptable because “Reasons…”?

    It’s a puzzler.

Rosa Klebb lookalike Angela Merkel recently stated “Nationalism and egoism must never have a chance again in Europe”

Macron and his EU bosses have made similar statements many, many times. Yet now they want to define disapproval of/antipathy towards Jewish nationalism as racist, and therefore criminal.

But if nationalism is good for the Jews, it’s good for the goyim, surely?

  12. “It’s that many racists disguise such under the cloak of UKIP/Brexit.”

And remain is openly–OPENLY– full of middle class Marxists who boast of their desire to grovel before foreign tyranny. Socialism being a death cult responsible for 150 million murders.

Steve–Rosa Klebb would have been ashamed to have been a lardarse like Mercow.

  13. And most anti-Zionism is inherently anti-semitic, even if not explicitly so.

Absolutely. Most anti-Zionists hate Jews and wish to see them come to harm. If the State of Israel did what its critics demand, Israeli Jews would become a persecuted minority – at best.

Just as most anti-Apartheid loons hated white Africans and wanted to see them destroyed. (Now that they’re being raped, murdered, looted and generally chased out of Africa the new narrative is “what white genocide? Lol”)

Just as “anti-racists” don’t actually hate racism. They hate you and your big gammon face, and mean to “rub your noses in” the diversity.

Much of contemporary politics is about humiliating and ruining real or imagined enemy groups, from Christian cake bakers to car drivers to the hideously white working classes.

  14. Israel is not a Jewish ethno-state, unless Mohamed the hotel receptionist who greeted me in Hebrew* last time I arrived in Tel Aviv (possibly Israel’s most ethnically pure city) is ethnically Jewish. Somehow I doubt it.

Now there are definitely a lot of people there who would like that Jewish ethno-state, ironically Jews who are so Jewish that they are themselves anti-zionist. But there are probably as many in Israel, certainly orders of magnitude more in surrounding countries, who would like Israel to be an ethno-state with no Jews in it at all.

*: I guess I look like the rootless cosmopolitan I have been accused of being.

  15. “The claim isn’t that anti-zionism is inherently anti-semitic.”

But in reality that is frequently exactly the claim. In fact I was once accused on t’internet of anti-semitism for failure to be enthusiastically Zionist enough.

I don’t doubt that Mr Corbyn’s shiny new Labour Party is awash with genuine anti-semites. I do, however, respect that party’s rejection of the attempt to bully it into adopting “a new official definition of antisemitism”, namely that produced by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance in 2016.

  16. The Pedant-General

My worry is that this complaint is actually the usual leftist projection.

The explicit complaint about the Jewish self-determination is covering the implicit assumption that this is all zero sum: leftists project that Jewish self-determination precludes Palestinian self-determination, when in fact it’s the other way round….

  17. @ The Recusant
If the subject is under discussion I will state that the Indian occupation of Kashmir is illegal and occured simply because Nehru was a Kashmiri Brahmin.
I don’t go round shouting it all the time because I am enough of a bore already.

  18. Jews want a Jewish state, just as every other self-defining national grouping want a state. And just like every other group, they want the freedom to choose not to live there if they individually happen to belong to another self-defining group as well.

And yet only the News get the sort of vile shit that says their desire is racist. Only them.

And some contributors here remind me frequently why I am pleased they think I’m an arsehole.

  19. And some contributors here remind me frequently why I am pleased they know I’m an arsehole.

    Fixed that for you.

Yeah, I know Ironman, we’re all bigots. Whatever.

  20. Similar issue in the US Congress, crow about diversity and electing different ethnic groups and how wonderful it all is then be surprised they have different views

  21. Mr Ecks You tal about socialism we, The British Empire killed 100 million + during it’s empire, in famines, slavery and wars.
Plus other empires have killed tens and 100’s of millions. So do we call the UK a death cult?
Do we call England a death cult for being the main nation in a the genocide causing British Empire?
Does that mean no decent person could ever be proud to be English?
Will if you say socialism is a death cult is the same true for England and it’s monarchy?

  22. The Pedant-General

    @socialist tref
“Does that mean no decent person could ever be proud to be English?”

No. It means that no decent person should promote famine, slavery and exploitative colonialism. These are neither values espoused by nor a necessary or inevitable consequence of being British or English.

Socialism, however, does necessarily and always lead to tyranny and poverty.

So it is true that no decent person should espouse Socialism.

You are attempting to draw an equivalence where none exists. Sod off.
