The research by University College London and Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge, also found that gay men and women were more likely to have higher numbers of sexual partners, compared with straight participants.
While 21.1 per cent of straight men claimed to have slept with at least 10 partners, among straight women the figure was 6.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, 84 per cent of gay men said they had slept with at least 10 partners, as did 33 per cent of bisexual men. And 28.9 per cent of bisexual women, and 14.3 per cent of lesbians said they had slept with at least ten partners, the study, published in BMJ sexual and reproductive health found.
That gay men are more promiscuous than hetero isn’t surprising. Hetero male chances are defined, perhaps limited, by female response in a manner that gay isn’t.
What does surprise is the lesbo number there…..more than hetero women?
Hetero women don’t sleep around because of the risk of pregnancy and STDs. But lesbians face no such risks, so they’re free to sleep around more.
Or perhaps they’re sleeping with lots of women in a futile search for one who can really satisfy them.
“21% of straight men claimed” – but how accurate were they?
Men, in my view, tend to exaggerate such numbers.
Gay women are more like men, so they overstate their prowess?
“What does surprise is the lesbo number there…..more than hetero women?”
Sometimes ‘sleep with’ really does mean sleep.
Straight women say it’s hard finding the right man, but I expect finding the right lesbian is probably nigh on impossible.

Self reported surveys have the lowest credibility and least use for data mining and extrapolation
@Maritime Barbarian:
“Men, in my view, tend to exaggerate such numbers.”
And straight women tend to minimise their numbers.
‘The research by University College London and Anglia Ruskin University Cambridge’
Every sophomore psychology class in every western university is required to conduct this study. Been going on for decades. That the Telegraph would publish one is odd. Did this one have just the right quirk to match their agenda?
I’ve had 379 sexual partners, but my wife was a 27-year-old virgin when we met.
Starfish
Statistics 101.1
and the mean figure for hetero males and females should be (as near as dammit) equal. Any ‘research survey’ where they don’t, and especially when they are as widely disparate as this one, needs to be taken with a salt mine.
Did the actual research report contain the means? The puff-piece only highlights the extremes.
@recusant
As it’s only over 10 used as a metric can’t say if In the sample there were 10 women who slept with the same 30 men each (who were also in the sample) think about what would be reported
Possibly promiscuous women are much more promiscuous than men and they are at the more extreme end of a wider distribution
Having met a few lesbians that used to be refered to a butch (no doubt a hate crime word now) I’m not that surprised by the lesbian numbers
Interestingly, or so I think, I know a woman, now past her prime but still startlingly beautiful, who once told me she’d had sex with at least 100 men.
I felt like Hugh Grant in that Four Weddings scene where Andi McDowell is taking him through her bed-count.
Anyway. Question, at least to my mind, is does such a woman feel any normal female urge to discount her notches by 50 per cent?
Lesbians struggle to form long-lasting stable relationships. So the number of partners they have will naturally be higher.
@recusant – it’s not reporting the mean, it’s reporting that it’s more winner-takes-all for males.
Probably more male virgins too.
EG Incels are male.
What do the lesbians count as a sexual partner, going on a protest march with them?
