The secret to music

A man of conservative tastes and values, Reed regarded Jones’s libidinous lifestyle with wariness, but rated him the best male singer British pop music had ever produced. “He loved good lyrics and he liked melodies with a little blues touch, and once you’ve got that, you’re home.”

Yep, sure, you can disagree if you want to. And when you’ve managed to do this…..:

It may have been simple, even corny, but the formula was mightily effective. Reed composed more than 2,000 songs and produced or arranged many more. He wrote hits for Shirley Bassey, Lulu, Petula Clark, Des O’Connor and Sandie Shaw, and in America his songs were covered by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye and Perry Como.

….then perhaps we’ll consider your opinion on the subject.

And if we’re honest about it if I ever manage to do anything quite as sublime as Delilah – no, I don’t mean write a song, but just achieve any one thing, anything, that matches that excellence – then I’ll still die screaming and insisting it’s not my time yet but content that I had, through chance perhaps, already touched that Hand…..

  1. The SJW types have been trying to get it banned from welsh rugby games as they perceive it as misogynistic and promotes violence against women , no luck so far thankfully

  2. BniC,

When Delilah comes on the radio, I go into a zombie like trance and can’t stop myself beating the crap out of any females who are nearby. I simply have no self-control. Thankfully the local beak accepts that it is not my fault, though I’ve lost count of how many times Tom Jones has been found guilty in absentia as an accessory before the fact.

  3. The Meissen Bison

His cover of Randy Newman’s “Mama Told Me Not to Come” is my favourite.

  4. I’ve lost count of how many times Tom Jones has been found guilty in absentia as an accessory before the fact.

Happens all the time over here too. Well, it’s not unusual.

  5. Mama told me not to come is a good
One He did a version of ‘Baby it’s cold outside’ as well and there was his version. Of Princes Kiss

  6. The covers of Mama Told Me and It’s Cold Outside were both on the same album of cover collaborations called Reload and both with other Welsh artists; the former with the Stereophonics and the latter with Cerys Matthews from Catatonia who has possibly the sexiest voice from 90s pop.

I half thought Kiss was on the same album, but a quick glance in my music library proved me wrong.

  7. TomJ – Reload is a brilliant album. Jones can really sing and his choice of duets is fantastic. My personal favourite is Burning down the House with the Cardigans. Nina Persson was a 90s crush…

  8. Anyone who can hear the lyrics of “Delilah”, especially as sung by Tom Jones, and think that it is portraying a character who has benefited from his jealousy, loss of control and violence is a clueless dimwit.
The Guardian comment columns are full of them.

  9. I went to the doctor and he told me I had Tom Jones syndrome

I asked if it was rare

He said “well it’s not unusual”
