Well, OK, it is the Express here

Royal shock: The Queen should NEVER be served wine for one surprising reason
QUEEN ELIZABETH II shouldn’t be served wine but does drink other alcoholic beverages.

Well, maybe we shouldn’t serve it to her because she’s got a decent cellar?

No, not the reason:

“I told her that the official wine for the Oxford and Cambridge boat race was English sparkling rather than French champagne and that English wine was becoming more popular and much better.

“And she said, ‘I don’t actually drink wine myself, but I hear it’s very good.’”

OK, fair enough. She is Brenda after all, can do what she damn well wants.

Before lunch, the Queen enjoys a gin and Dubonnet with a slice of lemon and lots of ice, according to Darren McGrady, a former royal chef.

During lunch, she likes a dry gin martini, according to her cousin, Margaret Rhodes.

The Queen finished off her day with a glass of champagne before bed.

Umm, doesn’t drink wine?

  1. I remember English sparkling wine by Nyetimber was the official wine for The Queen in the early to mid 00’s.

  2. Ah, Dubonnet! Tres sophistique! (actually rather palatable)

Pretty sure Brenda’s packing away more than her allotted ration of 14 units a week, tho’.

  3. “She is reportedly drinking up to six units a day, according to the report.”

Bless her. 93 and still going strong.

  4. I don’t want to read the article – do they actually ever explain the reason why you should never serve wine to the Queen who drinks it in copious quantities?

Is it because she’s a lush and you’re not supposed to enable that sort of behavior;) Does she dance around with a lampshade on?

  5. I know a guy who used to be a butler in a royal-related house, and he served wine to HMQ. Knocked the glass over in his nervousness, and she caught it before it spilled.

I shared a house in Bulawayo white an Irish Guardsman in ‘80/81 and he reckoned the Queen Mum was a regular visitor to the Sgt’s Messin the evenings when they were on Buck House duties. Apparently she was rather partial to the odd G&T or 6. Looks Brenda’s a chip off the old block.

Interestedly Anne is (at least was when I used to to does when she was guest at of honour) is tea total.

It brought a wry smile when I considered Phil’s response to being told he’d had his daily allowance of alcohol.

  7. I know Tim likes these, so how about this piece of journalistic brilliance:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7238971/Prince-Charles-warns-18-months-critical-grip-climate-crisis.html

“Governments around the world have pledged to limit rising temperatures to between 2C (35.6F) and 1.5C (34.7F) by 2100.

However, at current rates of greenhouse gas production, the Earth’s temperature is on course to rise by between 3C (37.4F) and 5C (41F), according to the World Meteorological Organisation.

The global temperature has already increased by 1C (33.8F) above pre-industrial levels.”

HMtQM used to drink gin and dubonnet (no mixer) – at least when she was forced to socialise with the Royal Navy. I drink gin and used to drink dubonnet (and lemonade) but the combination of the two just makes me shudder slightly.

Although I do drink Kirsberry Dry, which is just Kirsberry and vodka so horses for courses.

Major Colin Burgess’s book “Behind Palace Doors” is quite an interesting insight in to daily life with the Queen Mother.

  9. Re Anne – I was told by an occasional royal protection officer (Sandringham, when they’re here, obviously) mate of mine, that Anne was usually pretty merry on New Year’s Eve. They apparently go to the steps at Sandringham, call over a few of the protection lot and wish them a Happy New Year and have a bit of a chat. From what I can make out, they’re all good sorts.

And yeah, I always thought the gin and dubbonet was – as SE says just above – HMtQMs drink.

  10. Surreptitious Evil

A mate (ex-Grens) was once in a lift, so he says, with a very pissed Anne. Many years ago, mind …

  11. “I don’t drink … vine.”

See? They are shapeshifting lizard vampires! David Icke was right all along.

  12. “The global temperature has already increased by 1C (33.8F) above pre-industrial levels.”
We exited the Little Ice Age about the time the industrial revolution started so the world was warming anyway. The contribution from human activity to the global carbon budget is about 4%, so temperature rise attributed to human CO2 is about 0.025C. Hardly worth bothering about.

  13. Bloke in North Dorset

Happy to stand corrected on Queen Mum’s drink, it was nearly 40 years ago that he told me that story.

In her role as CinC R Sigs I met her a couple of times in settings where she could relax and we were served Buck’s Fizz while she had pure orange. We were told this was because she didn’t drink. Perhaps she didn’t drink in public.

  14. Bloke no Longer in Austria

Is it because she’s a lush and you’re not supposed to enable that sort of behavior;) Does she dance around with a lampshade on?

Ah, Agamammon, have you ever seen the Minions movie ? There the Queen is ousted by Scarlet Overkill and spends her new freedom in the pub, arm wrestling dockers ( it is set in the 1960s and she is voiced by Jennifer Saunders).

I spotted this in pictures of Trump’s banquet. He is teetotal and I noticed that HMQ also obviously had a glass of water during the toast. I assumed that she was just being polite. Or it might have been neat gin.

  15. Surreptitious Evil

In her role as CinC R Sigs

Now that’s a divided by a common language thing. CinC means “Commander in Chief” to me, not “Colonel in Chief”. Meh.

Back to pretending being a field officer in the R Signals …

  16. Bloke in North Dorset

    Bloke in Aberdeen,

It was hypothetical, but in my mind it was a robust fuck off.

    SE,

Yeah, our officers and quite a few failed tradesmen always deluded themselves we were a teeth arm and deserved to be on the right of the line.
