With John Prine and Willie Nelson among his fans and awards to his name, the Kentucky songwriter is a rising star of country – but he’s dismayed by its fixation on beer and pickup trucks
Beer and pick up trucks are rather important to a lot of people…..
True, it does rather limit the storylines, the truck drove away with my beer, the beer made me drive my truck and so on but they really are important to people.
I know very little about country music, but even I know this complaint is bollocks. Sometimes the genre is sublime:
Well, I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck
She got run over by a damned old train
Put another log on the fire,
Cook me up some bacon and some beans,
Go out to the car and change the tyre,
Wash my socks and sow my old blue jeans,
C’mon baby you can fill my pipe and then go fetch my slippers, Boil me up another pot of tea,
Then put another log on the fire babe,
And come and tell me why you’re leaving me.

There also seems to be a lot of lamentation by the women – Jolene, D-I-V-O-R-C-E. I guess beer & F-150s isn’t an unalloyed benefit.
You could also drive your truck to the beer store to pick up some beer.
I know what he means, but Country can hardly go too far n the other direction.
Lyrics about having a skinny latte with your transgender partner in your Toyota Prius would seem to lack Country cred somehow.
Don’t forget the dog! (Most likely going by the name of Shep.) I think it was Alberto y Los Trios Paranoias who sang a spoof country song about a guy whose dog ran off with his wife.
“Journalism is a profession whose business it is to explain to others what it personally does not understand.” – Lord Harmsworth
Childers strikes Bengal as being cerebral. Bengal’s problem is she is not. She struggles to describe Childers adequately, so we just get this WORD SALAD.
Q. What happens if you play a country song backwards?
A. Your wife returns to you, your dog comes back to life, and you get out of prison.
Jokes aside, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys certainly had some classic titles.
“Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed” and
“Asshole From El Paso” are particularly good.
With self-driving cars coming, will the country singers’ pickups leave them?
Jelly prefers trains.

Beer and pickups are fine, but don’t overdo it with the sherry!

Might I suggest Corb Lund and “The Truck Got Stuck”

You stole my wife and my pick-up truck. I want that truck back.
I like all types of music.
Both Country and Western.
Lucinda Williams has some good stuff that isn’t about beer and pickup trucks, though leaving women is definitely a theme, the use of the pause in the lyrics of come on is very good, it does mention a motorbike. If it was written about a particular guy he must have really pissed her off
Dude I’m so over you
You don’t even have a clue
All you did was make me blue
You didn’t even make me, come on!
You’re so self-involved
You’re in some kind of fog
You’re hung up on your hog
You didn’t even make me, come on!
You think you’re in hot demand
But you don’t know where to put your hand
Let me tell you where you stand
You didn’t even make me, come on!
Dude you’re so fire
Shut up, I’m not inspired
All I’m feeling now is tired
You didn’t even make me, come on!
You weren’t even worth it
I’m sorry I ever flirted
The effort wasn’t even concerted
You didn’t even make me, come on!
All you do is talk the talk
You can’t back it up with your walk
You can’t light my fire, so fuck off
You didn’t even make me, come on!
‘You’re so vain
You probably think this song is about you’
Its late and she’s waiting and I know I must go home
But every time I start to leave they play another song
Then someone buys another round and wherever drinks are free
What’s made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me
Baby’s begged me not to go so many times before
She says love and happiness can’t live behind those swinging doors
Now she’s gone and I’m to blame to late I finally see
