Facts and transphobia

Apolice force has been accused of “incredible irresponsibility” for treating the display of transphobic stickers around Oxford as a “serious crime”.

Some of the stickers, which have been dotted around the city centre, state: “Woman: noun. Adult human female” and “Women don’t have penises”.

Thames Valley Police has announced that those responsible could be charged with a public order offence and has appealed for witnesses.

It said: “Officers are investigating a large number of offensive stickers that have been placed across Oxford city centre containing transphobic comments.

Interesting to see what actually counts as transphobia, no? Presumably “Blacks have more melanin” is racist therefore, “Buggery, not just for homos” is inclusive?

Michael Biggs, Associate Professor in Sociology at the University of Oxford, suggested that the police had overreacted.

“This is literally the Oxford English definition of what a woman is,” he said.

“I can’t believe that needs any stance at all. To say that a dictionary definition is a terrible hate crime is extraordinary. The police is being incredibly irresponsible.”

How NewSpeak we’ve become. Quoting the dictionary is a crime now.

  1. Bloke in North Dorset

James Kirkup in the Speccie after quoting the police press release:

Sounds serious, eh? Makes you wonder what sort of hateful, poisonous messages were on those stickers. It must be something pretty horrible, to prompt a police force to make an appeal like this, right? Maybe those stickers were inciting violence? Or perhaps they were encouraging people to otherwise break the law?

Oddly, Thames Valley Police didn’t explain in that dramatic statement exactly what sort of vile and hateful messages are on those “offensive” stickers. Even more oddly, when I asked the force what those stickers say, a press officer told me “the content and appearance of the stickers is not suitable for sharing.”

And they wonder why they’re losing public trust.

  2. This is why my sympathy for underfunded, crime-battling Plod is zero. They occupy themselves with PC nonsense and chasing dead nonces while real crime goes unchecked.

They have made it abundantly clear whose side they’re on, and it’s not mine. So, fuck ’em.

  3. Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thought-crime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it

  4. If you don’t know the words you can’t think the thought. Of course, it takes time to eradicate words and then the associated thoughts, but it is perfectly doable.

  5. If “women” no longers means adult female human, then there will be a need for a word that means adult human female.
When “love-making” ceased to mean canoodling and came to mean having sex, the gap was filled with “canoodling”. When “canoodling” starts to mean something else a gap will open up and be filled.

  6. Next season of INSPECTORESS MORSE is gunna be woke as fuck.

MC – the greatest achievement of postmodern plod has been to make white middle British class people unironically sympathise with NWA’s ACAB hypothesis

  7. Interested: not so. The absense of a word to describe something does not prevent the thing happening or being thought about, the vacuum creates a word to describe it. People were advocating Brexit decades before the word existed.

  8. Zayna Ratty, the chair of Oxford Pride, said the stickers were “inducing hate crime”.

She told the Oxford Mail: “I’m not sure why this is being categorised as a public order offence instead of a hate crime.

Diversity means being lectured that the English language is a “hate crime” by someone whose name sounds like a rodent-themed Batman baddie.

  9. Citizen – So if I said that the vocal trans lobby were a bunch of deranged and deluded crazies, that would be hate speech and you’d arrest me?

    PC Plod – Yes.

C – But if I just think that the vocal trans lobby are a bunch of deranged and deluded crazies, you couldn’t arrest me?

PC P – we can’t (yet) arrest people just for thinking something.

C – OK then, I think that the vocal trans lobby are a bunch of deranged and deluded crazies

  10. I don’t live in Oxford but will gladly respond to the police appeal for witnesses. I can attest that no woman I’ve known has a penis.

  11. The police posted a Tweet about this which was breathtakingly bad even by their standards. Practically Pidgin in grammar and vocabulary. Morse would have had a fit.

  12. Next season of INSPECTORESS MORSE is gunna be woke as fuck.

Lewis: Sir, they’ve found a body down by the river, looks like murder.
Morse (looking up from the cryptic crossword in Trans Times): does it have a sticker on it?
    Lewis: no sir
Morse: Well stick to the point, Lewis, and don’t get distracted. Check if the Paninni Gang have been released from prison yet.

  13. Reminds me of the posters over here that said, “Islam is right about women”. Nobody could really explain why they were in a tizzy about them…

  14. Reminds me of the posters over here that said, “Islam is right about women”. Nobody could really explain why they were in a tizzy about them…

    Ha ha. Zugzwang, fuckers!

  15. Reminds me of the posters over here that said, “Islam is right about women”. Nobody could really explain why they were in a tizzy about them…

Someone should put a few of those up in Oxford

  16. Dennis, Mocker of Wogs

You have your own PC-gone-mad troubles where you are.

Nothing like police policing bumper stickers, though.

    And…

Nothing like the standard wog response to whenever a woggie homegrown stupidity is rightly mocked by a septic… “Yeah, we’re up to our necks in shit, but you’re up to your waist!” As if that makes it OK.

  17. Oh, come on Dennis, over in the US the police can’t even tie a black man to a horse and drag him along the street without someone complaining.

  18. So Boris wants to hire more of them? Why haven’t the Tories hit upon the idea that if you get the police to do less of this kind of shit then they will have more time to catch actual criminals, without needing to pay more for more police?

  19. transphobia – an unreasonable fear of trans, not liking trans, or just plain indifferent.

Not backing a Lefty cause is a phobia. It isn’t reasonable to not be a Lefty.

  20. A judge here recently ruled that a parent not using their child’s preferred pronouns constituted an ‘act of violence’, I assume had a lawyer in the case used the wrong pronoun it would have been contempt of court.
At least the father challenged on freedom of speech and expression grounds though no doubt some loophole will be found to that.
