There is a real risk that the coming general election could be the United Kingdom’s last – with Boris Johnson remembered only for being its last Conservative prime minister. Johnson’s deal is, we now know, even more fatally flawed than Theresa May’s in vital respects: it threatens to make Ireland a smugglers’ and tax avoiders’ paradise and ushers in a race to the bottom in social and environmental standards. All Labour MPs must vote against it. The deal also threatens to Balkanise Britain. Northern Ireland is, for example, exempted from the evil consequences of a US-UK trade deal – from the entry of chlorinated chicken to the contracting out of NHS services – while Scotland, Wales and England would be bound in.
If people don’t want to eat it then they won’t buy it. So, what’s the problem with it being on the shelves?
Either people want it, in which case they should have it, or they don’t and the availability makes no difference.
Leave the EU and the UK, a true win win for England.
Oh, now they’re bothered about the country being balkanised.
I like to watch cooking videos on youtube and it must be so nice for Americans to be able to handle chicken safely on their chopping boards, there seems to be no panicking or obsessive sanitising of hands or worktops. Bleach the chicken, not the kitchen!
I actually heard an argument that the problem with chlorinated chicken was that it’s ‘covered in bacteria’ before it is chlorinated. That it doesn’t appear on the shelves until after the chlorine treatment seemed lost on them.
It is amazing that the worst case scenario they can think of is chlorinated chicken. If that’s the extent of it then the US trade deal seems an easy win. No idea why so many people remain scared of it.
Many fewer once it’s pointed out to them the EU permits exactly the same process to be carried out to salads and vegetables.
People forget the tens of thousands of Americans who die every day after eating chlorinated chicken….
I’ve never seen a thin American, so it obviously isn’t doing them any harm.
Interested,
I think you are missing the rather obvious conclusion, chlorination makes you fat.
One of the things with fearmongering is that it relies on a lack of awareness of reality. It’s why Uber got their cars out into cities, broke laws and paid fines. You get people using Ubers, they like them. Fearmongering propaganda then doesn’t work.
The problem with “chlorinated chicken” is that probably a quarter of the population has eaten chicken in a diner in Florida. They and their friends didn’t get sick.
That picture of Gordon Brown at the top of the article: has he joined the ranks of the undead or was he always of a transylvanian persuasion?
The EU found chlorinated chicken safe to eat. So they needed another reason.
“The process might be used to conceal bad practices further up the supply chain”.
And, yes, chlorine is used widely. Like in swimming pools.
How much chlorinated water did we drink in that way?
Devil’s advocate here. Some people won’t get a choice of un-chlorinated chicken: schools, old people’s homes, prisons. Then there’s the change in availability: if every restaurant is using hormone-pumped genetically modified chlorine-bathed foodstuffs, then yes you have the free choice to never eat out (nor even buy so much as a triangular shrink-wrapped sandwich) and cook all your meals from scratch, but that’s clearly a huge loss of amenity for the worry-wart consumer.
Personally I place the chlorinated chicken worriers in the same camp as the mobile-phones-cause-headaches people; but your counter-argument isn’t a good one.
Lol, chlorinated chicken again. It’s like a holy icon for the Left. None of them have the first clue why it is ‘bad’, only that it is American and so automatically awful.
And from people absolutely desperate to avoid an election, and who want to give the EU complete control over us, wailing about the “UK’s last General Election” is pure chutzpah.
Its exactly the same people who decry Tesco/Starbucks/McDonalds etc – its a proxy for middle class hatred of the working classes. You can’t decry the working classes directly (although Brexit has loosened that stigma for the Remainer Deranged Brigade) so instead you scream about the things they spent their money on, the cheap end of consumer goods. The masses shop at Tesco, eat McDonalds, so those things are ‘Bad’ by proxy. Chlorinated chicken is just another version of that, plus it has the added advantage of being American, so ticks two of the middle class Left’s boxes.
Can’t have the masses having cheap shit you know Tarquin, they might have enough money left after feeding and clothing themselves to turn up places we go to!
It’s “chlorinated” in as much as the water that it’s washed in has chlorine in it… The stuff isn’t shoved through tanks of chlorine. I looked at the FDA site and it says that they monitor the chlorine levels in the runoff water at the processing plants, and guess what..? It’s barely more “chlorinated” than our drinking water in the UK. It’s an “America Baaad” scare-story.
The nearest I have heard to an argument against chlorinated chicken is the welfare of the chicken. Dunno how valid that is. Governments make laws about that sort of thing, so should be able to legislate against its consumption for the same reason.
What gets my goat about Brown’s argument is that we, the people of the UK, through our democratic processes, are somehow incapable of deciding for ourselves what social and environmental standards we should have, and somehow need foreigners to decide them for us. Grrr!!
Errr… Northern Ireland is a biggish poultry exporter. Buy a chicken-n-chips in Belfast, and it’s almost certainly locally-produced.
As someone has pointed out before, the US is one of the most litigious societies in human history. If people were even getting hiccups after eating chlorinated chicken then ambulance-chasing lawyers would destroy the whole business.
The fucking Bottler speaks. The cunt who had UK soldiers threatened with the glasshouse if anyone dissed him with say rabbit ear gestures because he knew how hated he was and couldn’t stand it.
Last night–from Guido –on Newsnight (which I never watch)-a Brexiteer MP, a Labour MP and a –former remain MP all agreed they will support Johnson’s Deal.
Don’t get me wrong–it is not a good deal compared to No Deal or what should have been negotiated by a non-traitor team. But–as many on here have pointed out–we have 450 traitors in the House of Traitors. It is much better than nothing and better than Treason May’s sellout.
If line ups like that named above are occurring I think the HoScum gang see that the jig is up. Can’t be complacent but I think the fans of dirty tricks are not going to pull any off tomorrow. Some might say that the fix is in. But once out IMHO we can start to push for far more freedom–enough to far exceed the EU Grandees worst nightmares.
Our own political scum is all that can stop us–and we have now seen them for exactly what they are.
The rest of his cockrot is what you would expect from the Bottler.
The NHS break up via a US trade deal–which is exactly what the EU were aiming to do with their trade deal.
Ireland as a paradise for smugglers and tax avoiders is the best thing that could happen for both sides of the Border.
Balkanise us–from a turd who wanted the UK broken up into EU satrapies–Southern England in with Northern France.
It has all the hypocritical bullshit that the Bottler is famed for.
The anti-Brexit hysterics try to promote the idea that it’s only the EU which keeps us from the introduction of contaminated food, sweatshops and children up chimneys.
Indeed, we have to be careful that we don’t descend to the level of such dystopian hell-holes as Canada, Australia, Norway or Switzerland.
It’s as if nobody has ever taken their children swimming pool before…
*to a swimming pool…
Damn, damn, damn: read, re-read and re-read again before hitting post! Gah!
Once we’re out of the EU can we then please legalise radiation treatment for food?
Though I suppose that if the food’s too sterile that might weaken the immune systems of our children by denying them “challenges”.
See, I can even predict the Guardian’s whingeing.
When people bring up ‘animal welfare’ as their latest excuse for why we need the EU to protect us from chlorinated chicken you have to wonder why the EU is perfectly happy with veal.
The argument always goes:
1) chlorinated chicken is bad for you.
Answer: No it’s not it’s perfectly safe.
2) But before chlorination it’s dirty.
Answer: Well we’ll never see it before chlorination
3) But it’s cruel the way they raise the chicken. Only the EU cares enough about animal welfare to stop the cruelty.
Answer: So why don’t they give a fuck about veal calf’s then?
Banning chlorinated chicken is simply protecting European chicken farmers from cheaper foreign produce.
@Andrew M
What you said, plus the fact that food labels are not going to say “chlorinated chicken” or probably even “American chicken” (wouldn’t surprise me if a law that tried to make them do so would violate anti-discrimination clauses in any putative trade deal). So “let consumers decide” doesn’t really work in practice.
Chlorinated chicken is the fracking of foodstuffs.
Proggies are only dimly aware of what it is, but they know it’s got something to do with capitalism and America, so it’s baaaaad!
Anyone remember any of the millions and millions of Brits who holiday in the US annually being warned off eating the local chicken? Exactly.
Mr Ecks, I really like your style. 99.99 per cent of the time I agree with you across the topics.
Hypochlorite treated chicken would be a good thing. Pity we don’t wash our chickens in the UK like this. 80% are contaminated with species of Salmonella and worse, Campylobacter too. Anyone campaigning against this is an ignorant fool who knows nothing about the microbiology of chickens nor food hygiene.
Thanks for your kind words Jussi. Assuming you are not a Meiac alias or something.
@ Maritime Barbarian
Far, far too much.
Which is why I gave up swimming pools at the first opportunity
Swimming is fine for fatties, but not for me
(Mr Ecks, I don’t even know who or what Meiac is.)
Doesn’t Australia have this chlorinated poultry too? If so, how does that match with them being a nanny-state?
I’m a vegetarian Brexiteer, so why should I give a shit?
As for animal welfare, don’t hear Remainers worrying about halal, do you?
Wasn’t the EU food standards agency criticised recently for not being up to scratch with a lack of controls over additives like aspartame and other stuff that is banned in the US and other places
What gets my goat about Brown’s argument is that we, the people of the UK, through our democratic processes, are somehow incapable of deciding for ourselves what social and environmental standards we should have, and somehow need foreigners to decide them for us. Grrr!!
The left really hates the British people and has never trusted us.
They’re making the same arguments about Boris’s deal. Apparently it doesn’t cover working time directives and environmental issues so has to be rejected and we have to stay in the EU. At least some of the better thinkers in the press and on the left are starting to point out the weakness of the argument:
Paul Embery
@PaulEmbery
Most workers’ rights we enjoy today came through the UK parliament, often following campaigns by trade unions. Many such rights in the UK – e.g. annual, maternity and parental leave – are superior to the EU minimum.
These things should not be outsourced to unelected bureaucrats.
MyBurningEars: Yeah, most likely labels won’t say “contains chlorinated chicken”, but the market will ensure labels will say “***COMPLETELY FREE*** from chlorinated chicken”. Rules and Regs don’t force MaccyD to label all their products as “British & Irish beef and potatoes”.
It’s a long time since I’ve cooked chicken from raw, but I habitually washed it under the tap before cooking it. Oh Noes! I’ve been eating chlorinated chickens!
jgh, apparently the problem with that is the water sprays salmonella all around your kitchen. Unless you have chlorinated chickens, don’t wash them before cooking, if they’re slimy just wipe them off with some kitchen tissue paper. Afterwards, bleach your kitchen, just in case. If you rinse your raw chicken in a sink the salmonella can leap meters all over the place.
My chicken, here in ‘Merica, has never smelled like chlorine. So I assume whatever the process is, the chlorine is rinsed off or allowed to evaporate* before packaging for sale.
*Chlorine evaporates quickly in the air.

+1 iirc NI grows ~1/3 of all UK Chicken, Moy Park is largest grower
It’s entirely probable that Boris Johnson will be remembered as UK Prime Minister long after everyone has forgotten about that fucking monocular Scottish cunt.
@Mr Ecks October 18, 2019 at 11:22 am
No it isn’t – do some research. It’s May’s Surrender Treaty Mk II
Watch BrexBox*
Read this:
Boris has compromised, not conquered on Brexit
https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/10/boris-has-compromised-not-conquered-on-brexit/
and
Brexiteers are making a mistake backing Boris Johnson’s deal
I hope Johnson loses tomorrow and EU obey Junker and no extension granted
@Mr Ecks October 18, 2019 at 11:22 am
* BrexBox Episode 11
The darkest day for our democracy; Boris bottles Brexit by bringing back May’s Surrender Treaty
– It’s a Treaty not a Deal
– Junker: no extension, Benn Act dismissed by EU – MPs coerced into voting for Surrender Treaty II as don’t want No Deal
– EU and Grieve & Letwin all happy clappy – bad sign
– Backstop EU plan – if “deal” rejected; extension granted if a second Referendum held
– Barnier: Future FTA? Must stay in full EU alignment inc tax
– Alexandra – good points @7m 30s
– Treaty: still contains all the humiliation of UK must adhere to EU Foreign Policy (@13m 40s), Standards, Tax…
– CFP continues – fishing industry sacrificed for nothing again
Boris has come back and waved a piece of paper after surrendering to Germany
Pcar
Are you sure?
14 month transition to December 2020 and at that point, if no deal is agreed, it’s WTO. Ie the comments about fisheries and all that look wrong to me unless someone can point me to it in the agreement? All of that is in the PD, which has to be negotiated and agreed in a deal to come into effect. If nothing is agreed, then no deal at December 2020 – we move to WTO – and no obligations on any of that stuff.
Don’t get me wrong. WTO now is better, as business is mostly ready for it, and it creates certainty rather than another 14 months of “what comes next”.
Also, negotiating from WTO, rather than negotiating from that transition, would be a much stronger place for the UK to negotiate from. The next cut off for December 2020 will be a whole load more Project Fear crap, crash outs, and lots more. From WTO, that kind of nonsense will have very little clout. Ie the risk of Boris capitulating (a new deal) during 2020 are much higher whilst in a transition period.
But I’m not convinced Ben Habib has got those details right at all. And Kirkup (the other link) is just a very bitter Remainer, massive pinch of salt.
Just imagine the outrage in France if they imported chlorinated frogs legs!
Cold May soup.
@PF October 18, 2019 at 8:36 pm
Sure? Yes
Question Time Live From Leicester 17 Oct 2019
– Martin Daubney @12m 40s
Unlike rest on panel he has read and analysed text of proposed Treaty and calls it out for what it is:
UK Surrender To EU Treaty Mk 2 and BRINO
MPs on panel visibly shocked that Daubney doing what he’s paid to do – his taxpayer funded job
May’s Surrender Treaty has not been changed except for NI Backstop. Rest inc CFP, Regulatory alignment, level playing field, foreign and defence, tax, vat, ECJ and all the other poison remains.
The problem with the revised political declaration is that it is just that – a non-binding declaration. The draft treaty remains largely unchanged. Even then, there’s lots not to like in the declaration, e.g.:
“70. The Parties should consider cooperation on carbon pricing by linking a United Kingdom national greenhouse gas emissions trading system with the Union’s Emissions Trading System.”
“73. Within the context of the overall economic partnership the Parties should establish a new fisheries agreement on, inter alia, access to waters and quota shares.
74. The Parties will use their best endeavours to conclude and ratify their new fisheries agreement by 1 July 2020 in order for it to be in place in time to be used for determining fishing opportunities for the first year after the transition period.”
Having allowed the EU to destroy fish stocks in UK waters and to go a long way to destroying our fishing industry in the process, why on earth would we agree any sort of agreement giving them continuing access to our waters after we leave?
Have you read the three documents?
Preferring Johnson to May does not mean one must accept his Surrender Treaty – although Speccie, Ecks etc so loyal to him they do
I’m not alone in pointing out the flaws in Johnson’s “new” “deal”:
“Deal or no deal?”, John Redwood
http://johnredwoodsdiary.com/2019/10/18/deal-or-no-deal-3/
Accept this Treaty and we’re tied by EU & ECJ in perpetuity
“Some might say that the fix is in.”
The fix is in.
PCAR–Don’t see your point. Of course the fucking ECJ will be ruling on EU law. The AG says NI can get out in the 4 years–and others suggest it might be good for the NI economy. The smuggling explosion certainly will be. Scots fishermens assoc endorses the Deal.
Does anybody out there know the legal status of shite amendments like that little scumbag Letwins ? Word has it the filth has visited Bercow’s gaff to plot. That worries me more than the Deal.
Pcar–unless you have a plan to stop 450 traitors fucking Brexit then the Deal is it. TBP isn’t going to win a GE outright.We can expand it. Howes of” Lawyers for Britain” who tore Treason’s orig shite to bits says it is tolerable–not good but far better than Treasons turd and expandable once we are out.
Pcar–just read your prev ill-informed tripe.. I am not “loyal” to Johnson but unless you have some miracle in the bag–and it won’t be TBP winning outright–then it is this deal or No Brexit because of the House of Shite. So come up with a plan or dump the negative nelly crap.
I still think Boris should use emergency powers to ensure the put down of the scum and get a GE.
…it is this deal or No Brexit…
This “deal” is no Brexit.
Wrong. Howe of Lawyers for Britain who dissected Treason May’s orig turd says it is tolerable. Not great but we can get out of whatever is in it. You are playing your usual record PJF. You have no plan at all. TBP isn’t going to win a GE outright.-so that won’t work. So you tell me how to best the HoTreason? I still think BoJo should have emerg powers handy to win.
Francois and Baker apparently are now supporting it.
https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/10/full-list-the-mps-backing-boris-johnsons-deal/
Pcar, you are right, in that I have not read / dissected it personally, not enough time and busy at the moment.
Hence, I’m taking my current steer from those MPs whose previous views / votes have been solid on this. Obviously not those such as Boris or Jacob, unfortunately they proved to be flakes (at the third attempt) and hence not to be trusted, but that still leaves the good men and women of Sparta. I’m keen to see which way they declare?
Re the contents, whatever the documents say, they are not binding in perpetuity unless there is no escape clause to the current treaty? If there was no escape clause, are we sure that those such as Martin Howe would now be saying that it’s tolerable. (And of course we all accept that it’s no more than that.)
Again does anybody have any idea of the legal status of any shite amendments –ie that cunt Letwin’s. Shortarse Bercow will have his last whoorah today.
Chlorinated chicken has the NFU and various other anti-cheap food worried so we here endlessly about.
What the OMG its WA mk 2/Brino/Treason/Stitchup brigade are missing is this whole deal is Cummings attempt to get back to the point he and Boris should have been in after the referendum – 2 years to negotiate a Free trade deal or leave under No Deal. Micheal Gove fucked that up, and landed us with May/Hammond/Robbins, who got us into the position we found ourselves in the summer. This deal is there to get us over the line, and out of the EU, and be in a position to extricate ourselves from all the other binding ties and into a free trade deal. Its just buying Boris/Cummings/Raab time. Thats all. They can do no other – there is just no way the Remain Rump Parliament will allow a ‘One bound and we’re free’ Brexit. And like it or not Parliament can keep this stasis going indefinitely. Certainly until 2022. This breaks the shackles holding Boris et al, and gives them the breathing space to actually get us out as he should have been in a position to do 3 years ago. We’ve effectively just wasted 3 years of our lives. Thanks Gove, you cunt.
You said it better than I could Jim.
Do you or Mr Galt–if he is out there at present– have any thoughts about Letwins cockrot of today? I believe that the EU law trumps UK and the existence of a deal will sink the traitors.
But I still think BoJo should be ready with CCA if needed.
“gh, apparently the problem with that is the water sprays salmonella all around your kitchen. Unless you have chlorinated chickens, don’t wash them before cooking, if they’re slimy just wipe them off with some kitchen tissue paper. Afterwards, bleach your kitchen, just in case. If you rinse your raw chicken in a sink the salmonella can leap meters all over the place.”
For some years now, for personal consumption, i’ve made a point of not washing any food in any way. Just gets cooked if it requires cooking. Last time I had a dose of the sh1ts was 10 years ago.
Since I was doing a lot of travelling & eating when & wherever I got the opportunity, seemed best to build up some resistance. The chance of not being exposed to salmonella or any of the other food bugs, over that period, have to be virtually zero. So far….nada.
You are playing your usual record PJF. You have no plan at all.
I try to be logically consistent, Mr Ecks. And of course I don’t have a plan. Like you, I’m just a bloke commenting on a blog. All I can do is observe and opine. I observe that none of the players with significant, direct influence are interested in an actual Brexit. It is thus my opinion that an actual Brexit has little chance of happening other than by a political accident.
What the OMG its WA mk 2/Brino/Treason/Stitchup brigade are missing is this whole deal is Cummings attempt to get back to the point he and Boris should have been in after the referendum – 2 years to negotiate a Free trade deal or leave under No Deal.
Maybe, Jim, but I’m not interested in where Cummings and Boris might have thought they should have been after the referendum.
And now, as a supposed route to actually leaving, this model assumes at least three shakey things: that Cummings and Boris will even be there for the period; that they are actually interested in leaving meaningfully; and that they are remotely capable of negotiating in our interests against the professional cheats and liars of the EU gang.
That would be the EU gang who are all delighted smiles at the moment. Hmmm, I wonder why they’re so happy with the “deal”.
And bloody old Nigel being such a stick in the mud, eh? I wonder why he’s so unhappy.
I believe that the EU law trumps UK…
Victory!
@Mr Ecks October 19, 2019 at 1:24 am
Rather touchy today are we? Foul language doesn’t make the facts go away.
As PJF says: This “deal” is no Brexit
We don’t need or want a Political, Legal and Regulatory “deal” with EU – we would like a trade deal.
EU Game plan all along was to use NI as a red-herring to distract from the poison in this Surrender Treaty
@PF October 19, 2019 at 9:09 am
There is no escape clause from the Surrender Treaty. If we want to end it EU must agree – John Redwood covered this
.
Leaving EU does not require a deal.
Johnson needs to play the long game – be strong, tell truth “Deal is shit, No Deal better; blame Hilary Ben and his fellow MP EU quislings for preventing us leaving EU on 31 October”

@PJF October 19, 2019 at 2:02 pm

I asked you what your plan was Pcar. You haven’t got one beyond declaring what should be instead of what IS. My CCA use would work well enough if Johnson had the bottle. You have not a clue as to how to force a No Deal–which I want as well–past the thronging betrayers and stitch up merchants.
The fact is that we can get out of the shite in Johnson’s Treaty. We can’t get out of No Brexit. TBP is not likely to win enough seats to make a difference even tho it may draw millions of votes away from the only real option for OUT at this time–the Deal.
The GE MUST be after Brexit.
The plan next week seems to be that –in a way Treason May never could– Johnson has persuaded the 27 that us seriously pissing in their tent is bad news . It would be for them. He seems to be sending the Surrender letter –thus avoiding Contempt horseshit–but making it clear that he has no intention of allowing anymore delay.
So they refuse the extension or delay making a decision til after 31/10/19. So he puts it on the pukes next Mon or Tues–it really is No Deal or his Deal. They will still try for some bulllshit amendments–but with no extension it does not seem the traitors have anywhere to go. Revoke and 2nd ref seem to be non-starters. The calc is that he has the numbers if they are really forced to shit or get off the pot.
My fear is the delayed decision. The twats in HoTreason might brass it out and vote down the Deal and hope the EU will make an extension offer 1 day before No Deal Brexit..
@Mr Ecks October 19, 2019 at 11:43 pm
Why should I have one? Not having one does not preclude one from highlighting faults in offered plan. EU 27 denying extension is all I hope and pray for now. Other than earthquake, XR shutting London, salmonella/legionaires in HoC…..
