Democracy, eh?

The Liberal Democrats have stopped campaigning on their policy of revoking Article 50 amid concern about its unpopularity on the doorstep, and have switched to asking voters to deny Boris Johnson a majority.

Activists have complained that the pledge to cancel Brexit without another vote if the party won a majority is going down badly on the doorstep as the party’s poll ratings droop.

  1. No doubt this clash with reality will be trotted out as another excuse to disenfranchise most of the electorate. They’ll have to propose this themselves, since they won’t be able to outsource it to the EU for much longer 🙂

  2. Steve

If you need to distract yourself from Jo Swinson’s imposing bathukolpian figure, try focusing instead on her gappy teeth. This does the trick for me.

  3. this seems strange to me (as an explanation for the poll dip) but then i suppose it’s wishy washy don’t knows being wishy washy.

Lib Dem candidate- can i rely on your vote?
Doorstepee: dunno, i’m a remainer, what you doing about Brexit again?
Lib Dem candidate – If our party gets a majority Brexit won’t happen.
Doorstepee- won’t that be anti democratic?
Lib Den candidate- make your effing mind up mate.
Doorstepee- how rude, i’m voting communist now.

  4. Off topic but Ha ha ….

“One of the most disgraceful events this week is the departure of the National Grid – our National Grid and SSE – to off-shore havens.” Polly Toynbee

SSE having got a Fair Tax mark, which of course Toynbee is an enthusiastic supporter of.

Shows just how worthless the FTM is.

  5. Hallowed Be,

There are remainers who think we should respect the referendum, for one thing. Yes, they lost, but they put things like respecting democracy above that.

There are remainers who think we should respect the referendum, for one thing. Yes, they lost, but they put things like respecting democracy above that.

I’ve just been listening to John Curtice on the Political Party podcast and he reckoned it was about 20% of remainers and they haven’t necessarily transferred their vote to Boris.

  7. Only 20%? So 80% of remainers think the referendum should be ignored? I suppose all that guff about Russian vote-rigging and supposedly illegal leave spending got an audience.

  8. “I’ve just been listening to John Curtice on the Political Party podcast and he reckoned it was about 20% of remainers and they haven’t necessarily transferred their vote to Boris.”

Curious to know where he thinks they’re going. I can imagine many undecideds (and Brexit isn’t everything to people, of course). Do you have a link to the podcast? Curtice is very good. Actually crunches data unlike most of the BS speculation out there.

  9. So the LimpDims are offering the voter an interesting choice. Deciding whether they were lying before or lying now.

  10. Shame my apartment in Perth has got a decent external security mechanism which stops the treasonous politicos and verminous TV licensing agents + (assorted chuggers and god botherers) from easy access.

Would love to give the Tory, SNP and Lib Dem’s a piece of my mind over their various idiocies.

Although Grandpa Death wasn’t the only one being dragged over the coals on TV recently. Scottish First Minister and Wee Jimmy Krankie impersonator Nicola Sturgeon was getting roasted for the SNP’s 14 years of failure over the NHS in Scotland. Quite rightly too.

  11. What we the People need is a means of putting the fear of God into them between elections too.

Every year, on the anniversary of the last GE, everyone should get the chance to vote for their favourite three MPs. The five who poll the least votes should be kicked out of Parliament or hung, whichever is cheaper.

  12. A very frustrating election.

Don’t forget that remainers = Those dickheads that wanted to remain + those dickheads that were frightened into picking remain although they wanted to leave. We have no idea what that split is. So 20% of remainers wanting to follow the referendum is probably low.

If anyone picks the lib dims despite this, *cough* change you can bet that they will still try and implement tearing up the referendum result. After all that is their policy.

I have nobody to vote for. All parties where I am are remainers or we want to leave in name only. Even Nigel has abandoned us in what must be the worst decision ever made. I’m now wondering what motivated him to capitulate like that.

  13. I have nobody to vote for.

I’m quite lucky, being in the UK’s 2nd most marginal constituency (where Labour will struggle to come in 4th place), having Tory, Labour, SNP, Lib Dem and BRExit party candidates running. Not quite decided who I’ll vote for, either Tory (with a nosepeg) to get BRExit or if they’ll get in without my help, probably Brexit Party.

Looking forward to the You Gov MRP poll being published later today to give me a guide to which way things will go. Not that a single vote usually makes any difference, I do TRY and do the right thing.

  14. “he reckoned it was about 20% of remainers and they haven’t necessarily transferred their vote to Boris.”

yes just my attempt to rationalise this problem. One day a subset of remain voters are saying i’m voting LD. They know full well LDs will do all they can to stop Brexit. Come the articulation of that on the doorstep (lets say)20% say you know what i’d like to be wishy washy and go with labour. You can’t be all things to all people, but some people are (italicised) wishy washy and those are actually peeps that change their mind. So counter intuitively Labours wishy washiness on the matter will pick up those votes.

  15. Lord T: I’m now wondering what motivated him to capitulate like that.

Someone took him to one side and said, “Remember that plane crash Nigel? Now if you want to screw up the commies in the north, that’s fine mate. They’re useless to us anyway. They’ve started getting ideas above their station so we need them stopped. But if you start messing with our boy Boris, maybe you won’t walk away next time. Know what I mean?”

Not that I would ever indulge in such blatant conspiracy mongering….

  16. TMB – Actually, between Jo’s splendid prow and watching Jeremy Corbyn get Brillo’ed on the BBC iPlayer, I need a cold shower

  17. Even Nigel has abandoned us in what must be the worst decision ever made. I’m now wondering what motivated him to capitulate like that.

    Maths.

  18. Re: Jo Swinson – in the WhatsApp group a couple of mates and me have, whenever she pops up, one of us will start “Great! It’s Jo Swinson”*. After having… erm… pointed out her 2 best features… we then get on with the conversation about her most recent doings.

  19. Lockers –

    Whoah-oh, here she comes
Watch out boy, she’ll chew you up
    Whoah-oh here she comes
    She’s a squirrel killer

  20. My guess is their pledge to put a man in a dress in every girls’ changing room is probably responsible.

That sort of stuff goes down a treat with the Guardian but with mothers, not so much.

  21. Dennis, Buzzword Master

    bathukolpian? bathykolpian? Seriously?

She’s stacked. Stacked. Leave it at that.

Viv Stanshall was right when he stated that the British seem to prefer stumbling over awkward words (trousers) rather than easily using simple ones (pants).

  22. “droop” is a good Libdemy sort of a word.

I may have to vote Libdem, alas, as the alternative is the Nazi party candidate.

  23. Jo Swinson is not prepared to have her head down the toilet in her proposed scene with Richard. “Rocco’s LibDem Dirty Girls” might not see the light of day. Can anyone put in a word with the party faithful?

  24. Lord T–Don’t split the vote. Get the Brexit we can get–which is still OUT and then re-arm and reform the line for the completion of Brexit and the rest of the war against the globo elite of which Brexit is only the start.

Note that ALL the shite will be trying to use stealth taxes to take our cars after the GE. That battke can’t be avoided and must be fought. So put BluLabour in who still have some soft pragmatists who can be pressured. Shite Marxist fanatics as in ZaNu can’t be.,

  25. Dennis, he of the prolific pseudonyms

Let’s assume that la Swinson is indeed “stacked” as you suggest, what word would you favour when contemplating the Junoesque form of Diane Abbott or Emily Thornberry?

The English language is so wonderfully rich that one can draw these fine distinctions.

I hope it will not surprise you that I am almost certainly not alone on this thread in wearing both pants and trousers simultaneously.

  26. Dennis, He Who Owns A Rhyming Dictionary

Let’s assume that la Swinson is indeed “stacked” as you suggest, what word would you favour when contemplating the Junoesque form of Diane Abbott or Emily Thornberry?

Heffer. They ain’t Junoesque, nor are they Rubenesque. They’re heffers.

  27. Dennis, The Beau Brummell of Central Ohio

I hope it will not surprise you that I am almost certainly not alone on this thread in wearing both pants and trousers simultaneously.

If you told me that a number of the people on this thread wore two pairs of pants at the same time, I would not be surprised at all. Not in the least.

  28. Lord T: “I’m now wondering what motivated him to capitulate like that.”

Probably some variation on what Kevin B suggested. Short of ripping off his shirt and showing he was a transgendered woman with bigger ta-tas than Ms. Swinson, it is hard to see how Mr. Farage could have sunk the knife deeper into his own Brexit Party.

Consider for a moment — the same Establishment that beat down the rock-ribbed Mr. Farage is going to have no problem twisting the arms of Tory MPs in the new Parliament. Boris the Unreliable and his team will deliver the most watered-down BRINO imaginable — and then the topic will never be spoken of again.

  29. Bloke in Lower Hutt

When Jo Swinson’s political career inevitably hits the buffers, I will be offering her the role of Nora Batty in my reboot of Last of Summer Wine owing to her striking resemblance. Spoiler alert, my reboot starts with Jeremy Corbyn hurtling downhill in a bath tub wearing an old woolly hat.

    BoM4,

Curious to know where he thinks they’re going. I can imagine many undecideds (and Brexit isn’t everything to people, of course). Do you have a link to the podcast? Curtice is very good. Actually crunches data unlike most of the BS speculation out there.

Its on all the platforms but you can also listen on SoundCloud

From Matthew Goodwin on Twitter, this is the latest distribution by Remain/Leave:

Voting intention by EU ref vote:

    Changes w 1-4 Nov

    Remain:
    Labour 46% (+8)
    Lib Dem 25% (-5)
    Conservative 16 (-1)
    SNP 6% (-)
    Green 5% (-2)

    Leave:
    Conservative 73% (+11)
    Labour 13% (+5)
    Brexit Party 6% (-15)
    Lib Dem 4 (-)

    YouGov/The Sunday Times 21-22 Nov
    #GE2019

One thing that frustrates me with all the polls is they leave out the don’t knows. But that accords with what Curtice said.

  31. Bloke in North Dorset

    dearieme,

She’s been MIA for a while. She was on the Matt Forde podcast but that’s all I’ve seen and heard (I didn’t listen long). Rumour had it a while ago that internal Labour polling showed that her seat was under pressure (cue schoolboy jokes).

Also missing is the Abboptomus. In her place we’re seeing a lot of Comical Ali Barry Gardiner

  32. Bloke in Germany in Hong Kong

So how should a remainer but referendum result respecter in one of the safest labour seats vote?

Idiots managed to get me my papers on time this time.

  33. Bloke in North Dorset

Just in from Matthew Goodwin on Twitter:

    New.

    -Labour up again
    -Con lead down to 7pts

    Conservatives 41% (-1)
    Labour 34% (+2)
    LibDem 13% (-2)
    #Brexit Party 5% (-)
    Green 2% (-)

    Savanta-ComRes Nov 25-6
    #GE2019

It might seem bizarre but Tory strategists will be fairly pleased. Their biggest fear, according to Speccie and a few others, is complacency from a big lead.

  34. More cockrot from hobbyist Longspewer.

Farage can do sums numbnuts. Better a Brexit that is still out–if not ideal– and rally his forces for the FTA than lose a lifetime ‘s work by letting remain win because the good guys were dumb enough to split the vote. A concept too far for a far-off chump like you dickwad. Grand gestures from losers make you 1st class candidates for shitehood. But you are already there hobbyist.

  35. “So 80% of remainers think the referendum should be ignored?”

The Left respects democracy as a tool to be used against the right. Otherwise, they don’t care.

    “Bathykolpian?

    Without pictures, it didn’t happen.

This whole Brexit shtick reminds me of the old adage: “Perfect is the enemy of good.” You should have gotten out no later than 2018. The Establishment has used the idea of getting a perfect exit as a foil for getting people to accept delay, and the longer the delay, the less chance of exit. It may already be to late.

“We can’t leave without a trade agreement!”

Of course you can. You are better off leaving without ANY agreement. Get out, then negotiate as a non-member. As long as you are still a member, the EU isn’t going to take you seriously.
