I tried to identify as someone who gives a toss. Couldn’t do it.

Sex is indisputable biological reality, and the overwhelming majority of people can be categorised as male or female on all (not just some) of: their genitals, chromosomes, breast development upon puberty, menstruation upon puberty, ability to impregnate or give birth, quantity of body hair. So you can be either male or female as you see fit. Today. And different tomorrow.
Race stands on rather thinner, and vastly more opaque ice, many people are not easily categorizable, it is at least partially socially constructed, (the extreme view is even that it is entirely socially constructed), yet it is assigned to you immutably by your peers and you may not ever change it or even have any say in which race you are.
