Dear Lordy Me

Look, we know that Matt Yglesias and Ezra Klein were suckers for any sort of progressive woo. The idea that real smart peeps like them could run the world and tell everyone what to do.

But astrology?

In her book, she draws on the rich lives of Frida Kahlo and Maya Angelou, and it’s exciting to see how such remarkable women’s stories line up with their birth charts. It’s also comforting to know that they, too, faced obstacles that, while unpleasant, shaped them into the unique women we now admire.

Astrology has seen renewed interest in recent years, thanks in no small part to clever astrology memes and witty tweets. But Nicholas’s popularity points to how contemporary astrology connects with our larger need for meaning and hope while living in very uncertain times.

I sat down with Nicholas during a lunar eclipse to discuss her beliefs about healing, why we’re so drawn to astrology, and why we also need therapy. Our interview has been condensed and edited.

Yep. Ezra Klein has just published this schlock.

Jeez, is Vox losing that much money?

  1. why we’re so drawn to astrology, and why we also need therapy

Someone’s on the cusp of making a connection there.

  2. Is Matt Yglesias related to that Spanish crooner who used to be strangely popular? What was his name? I’m thinking Hugo Yglesias, but that doesn’t look very Spanish.

  3. “Frida Kahlo and Maya Angelou”

    Who and who?
    Women? Wouldn’t know from names

“Ezra Klein” as above, but thought Ezra was a guy

Astrology: isn’t that what climate ‘scientists’ do?

No. His father is a rather obscure novelist who has done work as an equally obscure screenwriter in Hollywood.

One can always hope, can’t one?

  6. Oh, it’s USA & Left MSM – weird names and derangement in abundance

C4 News: ‘…what will they say in Trump’s defence other than he’s done nothing wrong?’

Given he hasn’t done anything wrong, what do the haters expect?

Anyway, what’s wrong with quid-pro-quo? All activities are based on that.

Frida Kahlo until a very few years ago was a bit of an exotic oddity of a painter, wife of the then better-known Diego Rivera.
Now, if there is a TV quiz show question about painting you don’t know the answer to, just say “Frida Kahlo”.
Rivera is rapidly disappearing into the shadows.
I think you can guess the reason.

P.S. Both were communists and Kahlo had an affair with Trotsky when he was in exile. Her fans curiously tend not to mention that she charmingly shopped her lover to Stalin, who then had him murdered.

  8. Yglesias – means “church” in Portuguese. Or Iglesias does at least.

Was quite a common name for Jewish to Christian converts to take. Back in the day when the choice was conversion or death on the bonfire. Of course some converted in name only and changed back when they left the country….

    This absolutely says it all

  10. Cool it with the anti-semitic remarks Tim. Of course they’re smarter than us and should be allowed to run the place.

  11. How far has socialismo fallen?

From “inevitable historical forces” to Russell Grant as the power behind the throne.

Still there may be something to Astrology–as Gypsy Rose Swansoiler put it ” If your parents didn’t have any children chances are you won’t either”.

  12. @Jonathan

Nothing “anti-semitic” in Tim’s post. Are you an offence seeker?

    btw it’s anti-Semitic :tongue

If you want the absolutely most cretinous take possible on an issue du jour, Yglesias is your man. Murphy cannot hold a candle to him in his prodigious output of the most bespoke, lovingly-crafted fuckwittery on the market. His stupidity is like one of those crazy numbers you get in combinatorics or whathaveyou: your mind probes around the edges of it and you start to get a handle on it only for your consciousness to recoil from its immensity.
