Why are they doing this?

All the pics of that bird in Cyprus. They’re anonymised. To the point that her family are too.

Why?

Yes, anonymity of rape victims and claimants, sure. But she’s not a victim of rape. She’s a very naughty girl who has just been found guilty of an offence in a court of law. In a jurisdiction that, as a result of the existence of the European Arrest Warrant, we officially agree is a good as our own legal system.

When our own court system has declared that someone was not raped but falsely claimed to have been so then the piccies do indeed go up. Why not now?

BTW, no, I’m not saying that we all ought to publish either her name nor her picture. Perfectly happy to never know who she is myself. It’s just, well, why the difference?

  1. In a jurisdiction that, as a result of the existence of the European Arrest Warrant, we officially agree is a good as our own legal system.

It’s rather perverse for a Brexiteer to rely on that “officially” when one of the many, many reasons for leaving the EU is the claimed but bogus equivalence of institutions across member states, not least the criminal justice systems.

  2. Family of wealthy lawyers who’ve threatened to sue anyone who dares to as much as whisper their name?

    A prominent media family?

Daughter a subject of a forthcoming British trial?

Family have genuine security concerns e.g. in a witness protection programme? At particular threat of terrorism? What was it called – a “D” notice?

  3. Perfectly happy to never know who she is myself.

Same here, but it would be useful information if we were from her age group / location.

  4. Because

The official truth is that every country in the world, never mind Europe, has a broadly good legal system and that no country suffers more from the patriarchy than Britain except perhaps the US

The unofficial truth is that maybe Cyprus has a bigger problem. Maybe the judge was not as neutral as we would like. They can’t say this so the line is the girl’s health is the issue, or the more general, we are all guilty, or the best one yet: there’s a pipeline from Israel to Cyprus that might get cancelled. And we all know it’s safe to repeat conspiracies about Jews – you’re not going to lose any dinner invites over that.

  5. I wonder what her mother is like teaching her daughter that it is perfectly normal and safe to have group sex with a dozen partners?

  6. The Supreme Court of the UK Media, sitting in closed session, has reversed the decision of the Cypriot judge & furthermore re-instigated the investigation of the 12 Israeli tourists, charged, tried them & found them guilty. The SCUKM is unconstitutionally the highest court in the land, senior even to the UK Supreme Court & its predecessors, the Law Lords & all, including HM Government, quiver before it.

  7. What are they going to send in the pipeline? Orange juice in one direction and zivania in the other?

  8. The Supreme Court of the UK Media…

The non-naming of the one found guilty seems to be very widespread. I tried two Israeli and two Cypriot news sites, and they were also staying with anonymity. An Israeli story said she couldn’t be named for legal reasons. One Cypriot site had a picture of the mother.

    This was interesting:
“Judge Michalis Papathanasiou said although the public mischief charge was a serious offense, he decided to give the woman a “second chance” because she admitted through her lawyers during mitigation that she made a mistake in making the false rape claim.”

If so, that’s an admission to the court as well as the earlier retraction during the investigation.

    Something’s fishy, that’s for sure.

I would also be interested – for specific technical reasons.

It is all a question of the Victim Index (VI).

She scores high on this by identifying as female, and by being young and therefore probably Liberal.

Her negative scores are being white and being rich. Both of these are assumptions, since I am not really following any of the news reports.

Now it is well known that being Rich is bad, but being Liberal makes that all right. But I didn’t know before this that being Female trumps being White. Or perhaps I’ve forgotten some other issue? Perhaps the fact that Cyprus is 95% Catholic, and hence Bad, is counted into the equation? Therefore all Cyprus official action is Bad?

One thing is clear. Any facts which were asserted or proven in court have absolutely nothing to do with this response….

  10. Whoops – I’ve just noticed that Cyprus is Orthodox, rather than Catholic. But this does not alter the principle that any traditional religion involving God is bad (except Islam), while any modern religion involving Gaia is Good…..

You’ve forgotten the nature of the other parties in the equation – the victims/perpetrators (depending on your viewpoint) are of course Jews. So count as rich white males in victimhood poker. With added antisemitism just because, well its Jews! Had this girl accused 12 young Muslim men (not sure what they’d have been doing in Sin City but whatever) of raping her, then she’d have be thrown to the dogs as a racist islamophobic bigot deserving of everything the Cypriot court system threw at her.

  12. What are they going to send in the pipeline? Orange juice in one direction and zivania in the other?

    Heh.
The pipeline carries natural gas, and is only going through Cypriot waters (on its way into Europe via Crete then Italy.

  13. Imagine if the young woman chose to holiday in Rochdale rather than Ayia Napa. Better still imagine she actually lived there and was aged 14.

Imagine if she had accused 12 young men of non-Israeli heritage of gang-rape.

Imagine how interested the social services, police and national media would have been in investigating and reporting.

    It’s the nationalities innit.

  14. I think the media have an informal agreement that they don’t engage in “slut-shaming”. It’s a feminist thing, apparently, and if the reports are to be believed…

  15. Dodgy: I think technically you were initially right. Somewhere in the back of my mind if the information that the Eastern Church calls itself the Orthodox Catholic Church, whereas the Roman Church calls itself The Church.

One of those odd pub-quiz things, like the chap in Rome isn’t called The Pope, he’s got some other title, The Pope is the head of something like the Coptic Church.

  16. jgh
    Bishop of Rome?
Visited the Vatican and Vatican museum a few years ago. Truly amazing place (and I’m a full-on non-believer).

  17. Pontifex Maximus? That is, as you may recall, ‘chief Bridge-builder’, but then rendered via the magic of, um, language as ‘chief magistrate’.

Magisters, if memory serveth, be teachers, innit.

Could be worse. Chief Heap Big Bunkum says.

  18. Re the Pope’s titles, it’s a bit like the Prime Minister, who is officially First Lord of the Treasury.

Similarly the Pope is Bishop of Rome; everything else comes from Rome’s position as the primary diocese in the Catholic Church, and his other titles are just courtesy ones.

“Pope” used to be a general honorific for all bishops, but quite early on it because reserved, for the Bishop of Rome in the West, and the Bishop of Alexandria (who, as jgh says, is head of the Coptic church) in the East. The Alexandrians I think used it that way first.

  19. Time: “It’s just, well, why the difference?”

It is obvious. The explanation lies in economics.

Cyprus is angling to snatch a share from Spain of those British lass drunken hen night anything-goes parties — the ones that get regular write-ups in the Society Pages of the Daily Mail. One of the keys to getting that market is to provide the young ladies with confidence that ‘What happens in Cyprus stays in Cyprus’.

  20. I saw the mother outside court on the news last night, this time with her face pixellated but NOT her voice replaced by an actor to ‘avoid identification’.

And I know now everything I need to know about how her daughter was raised to find herself in this situation.
