Hmm, well, dunno really

Last year, Greer said of Markle: “I hope in a way that she’ll bolt, but maybe she’ll take Harry with her.” Top marks for prescience. This time, in an interview with Australia’s 60 Minutes, Greer spoke about the couple’s “awful” “showbiz” wedding and how they may “slide into complete obscurity”. Then, Greer went low, saying that Markle had better be in love: “If she’s been faking it all this time, oh boy, what misery. How many orgasms will it take? How many fake groans will get her through this?” Well, I wouldn’t know, though maybe no more numerous than the publicity orgasms Greer presumably had when her vile and crude comments went all over the world.

Orgasms, fake groans… Who even has the energy to unpack all the tired, reductive woman-on-woman nastiness in that? This is the author of The Female Eunuch pondering whether a woman is a conniving fame-whore, who views her husband, the father of her child, as a lucrative “john”. And yet, far from being shocking, what’s striking is how predictable, even monotonous, all this is. Who isn’t attacking Meghan these days?

My own reading of reductive woman-on-woman nastiness is that whatever any woman says about someone else there’ll be another woman ready to say “Oooh, she’s such a bitch, didja hear what she said about…..?”

But then given that I’m male I’m not allowed an opinion on such, am I?

  1. Who isn’t attacking Meghan these days?

I think by ‘…attacking‘, she means ‘…accurately describing her behaviour‘.

  2. I didn’t know Barbara Ellen was still going. Years ago, she was writing bitchy opinionated stuff that involved absolutely no specialist knowledge at all. She just sounded off like a sixth former at whatever was in the news, apparently based on whether she liked people or not. Nothing has changed. Extraordinary that she gets paid anything at all.

  3. Mad Germaine had a wonderful hissy fit a decade or two ago when the Fellows of Newnham College – it’s all-female, you know – smuggled a tranny onto the Fellowship and La Greer discovered that she wasn’t one of the inner circle who’d known about it all along.

  4. Doesn’t everyone know the route out of acting is to marry a rich bloke? If you’re an actress who is basically a hottie rather than a thesp (e.g. Judi Dench, Meryl Streep), you need an exit strategy. She’s still an attractive woman, but TV and movies pick from the hottest. There’s a bunch of examples. Rita Hayworth, Princess Grace, Salma Hayek.

She might even find him a bit attractive, physically, but he’s hardly Michaelangelo’s David and he’s a bit dim. If he was a runner on set, she wouldn’t let him near her. But he can open doors for her and give her a really nice divorce settlement.

If she was actually in love with him, she wouldn’t be returning to home turf so fast. She’s already starting her exit.

  5. “ But then given that I’m male I’m not allowed an opinion on such, am I?”

You could self-ID as one of the gals to give your opinion, then transition back to bloke status afterwards. I understand such gender oscillation depending/desire on mood is acceptable,
