Follow this logic

Nonetheless, a national health program with unified financing and governance – basically the opposite of what we have in America today – is a powerful tool in a health crisis.

The debate over Medicare for All in the age of Covid-19 is complicated by the fact that it is our public health agencies – and not the medical care system – that serve as our first line of defense against novel epidemics. In that regard, we’ve shot ourselves in the foot with a 12-gauge shotgun: year after year of underfunding of our federal, state and local public health agencies has left us ill-prepared for the Covid-19 challenge (as evidenced by the testing fiasco).

If it’s government financing health care then we’ll not spend enough on it. Because the bit of American health care that is government financed doesn’t have enough spent on it. Therefore all health care should be government financed.

  1. The government-funded part of the US healthcare system alone spends more per head than the NHS. (Depending, as always, on how you count it). The private bit spends as much again (ditto).

  2. It’s funny, but I don’t see the privately financed supermarkets collapsing under the strain of quite unprecedented demand. Almost as if this ‘leaving provision to the private sector’ thing is working.

  3. “unified financing and governance” only works if they make the right decisions, you know, like they did in China …

    I see the government has just bought in: “ An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week.” (BBC) from the private health sector.

    Just imagine where we’d be If the left had had its wish and the private sector had been shut down? And nobody in their right minds can believe that they’d have put that many resources in to the NHS and kept it functional.

  5. ‘complicated by the fact that it is our public health agencies – and not the medical care system – that serve as our first line of defense’

    Wut? If you have chest pains, don’t call a doctor! Call a public health agency!

  6. underfunding of our federal, state and local public health agencies has left us ill-prepared for the Covid-19 challenge (as evidenced by the testing fiasco)

    Nobody knows when or what next pandemic will be, testing kits can’t be ‘invented’ until manufacturers know what to test for

    It’s usual Left ilogical demand: Gov’t run is useless, need more Gov’t run. The pandemic started in Communist China and was made much worse by China Gov suppressing news and denying it existed

    I’m praying Boris doesn’t surrender to Left’s demands for rationing & price fixing

    Really? Don’t believe that. Anyone able to confirm his assertion?

    @BiND

    Lefty Burnham on QT said Gov’t should ‘take control of’ – aka steal – Private health care facilities
