Your country needs you

As is clearly and obviously true all knowledge is local. That means you know more about your part of the world than a central bureaucrat does. So, help us out here and tell us. From Madsen Pirie:

Legend has it that Drake’s drum, the one he left to the nation, can be heard to beat at times when the country is in crisis or at war. It calls for people across the nation to rise up to defend it.

We’re beating that drum now. The nation is in crisis as never before. The economic heart of the nation has slowed, and it needs major and urgent action to revive it. We are beating the drum now to rouse as many of us as possible into action. We look not to those on high to save us, but ideas and initiatives from the little platoons Edmund Burke correctly said made up a nation — the people who, added together, are all that makes us great.

That drum call goes out to you: a vast army of people with ideas and with energy. We want to hear all of them. Companies stand on the edge of ruin and our prosperity with them. The best way to ensure that our firms survive the lockdown and thrive after is to ensure that they’re as free as possible to transact and trade — provide goods, services and increase our wealth once more.

So we want to hear from you of every tax cut that can lift a burden, and every regulatory change that can lighten the load on businesses that want to grow again. Let us hear of every bureaucratic impediment that stands in the way of renewed growth and expansion, and let us hear of the ways in which it might be suspended or permanently extinguished.

What regulations should we suspend during and after the lockdown?
What taxes should we suspend and cut?
What measures could help restart the economy?
How should we unwind state interventions?
Is there anything the Government or public discourse has missed?
Let us have those ideas and initiatives from many and diverse groups, and let them collectively constitute a volume that can be a handbook for rebuilding the economy, and a blueprint for the new Britain that must emerge.

Please answer our call via the link below, send it on to anyone and everyone you know, everyone who everyone you know knows, their dog too if it has a brilliant new tax idea to shout about!

  3. All knowledge is local except when a gaggle of bigoted old women decide to cut us off from our markets and suppliers, despite everyone actually dealing with it, asking them politely to stop being so fucking stupid.
The Uk is already exceptionally unregulated as evidenced by its high employment low wages and zillions of home work start ups and quasi self employed.
Growth in this country comes form high tech media Financial services Legal services ..people with brains ! – I hear no call; for less regulation for any of these sectors. This is like the rhetorical notion that “Free” from actual paying customers, the ship of state will roam the seas doing mercantile deals …yadda yadda.
Only retired people could possibly listen to such horse shit without laughing.

There is one thing we can do right now to help and that is cancel Brexit. It has wide support and even the old people who voted for it feel ashamed as they watch the young bringing them food and …once again paying their bills.

    Cancel Brexit

  4. Violet Elizabeth Newmania, still banging that tired old drum?

In case you hadn’t noticed, Brexit happened on 31 January. There is no cancelling it now. It is done, might not be completely dusted, but it’s done.

Tinkety Tonk old fruit, and down with Remainers.

100% IHT. Pay off national debt, reduce other taxes. Prevents wealth hoarding (bad) and encourages gifts (good) and investing in your kids’ education rather than giving them a load of stuff. Better redistribution of wealth. Don’t give me that flannel about the great wealthy philanthropists, all of the ones I can think of made their money.

  6. Abolish the EU
Legalise weed and tax it sensibly
    Abolish planning permission
    Flat tax
    Merge Income tax and NI
    Bonfire of the quangos
Numbers in Lords = numbers in HoC
Massive rationalisation of red tape – starting with HSE and import / export
    Double capital allowances
    Kill triple lock
Abolish Barnett formula – equalise public spend per capita everywhere (to lowest level)
Create housing corporation that can self-approve planning (if planning death above not possible)
Mandate UK sourcing for many strategic items (not just medical kit)
Assassinate Xi Jin Ping and nuke Paris / Brussels
Massive review of strategic weaknesses – internet, supply chains, power, food, etc.
Find a way to tax celebrities according to how annoying they are.
Appoint Harry & Meghan as joint ambassadors to Greenland (the northern bits)
Create an officer class in the Police as per Army

  7. All citizens are equal before the law. Absolutely no preference for race, colour, creed or gender.

  8. Abolish all employment regulation for small businesses. Say 5 employees and under. Maybe in return for a higher minimum wage for such employees.

  9. Newms

So, you’re calling for “less” future regulation of financial services, whilst having them remain in the EU…. (5.24am – late finish I’m guessing, rather than an early start)

The problem is you good stuck with lots of businesses that never expand, which means the good don’t grow and the bad don’t fail.

This is (was) a problem in Italy where the threshold was 50. An Italian colleague told me how it worked. His father had a building company at 50 but didn’t want to grow it because of the extra taxes and employment regs. It meant that Italy had lots of building firms that size and you couldn’t get the best ones to do the job even for extra money because they were always booked up. The bad ones weren’t driven out of business.

Just get rid of all the employment regs and taxes that get in the way of recruitment and training, most have been encouraged by big businesses to crowd out competition anyway.

Ideally yes, but we live in the real world. If you do that, a pound to a penny some chancer like Mike Ashley will immediately sack all his workforce and make them reapply to work for a pittance 7 days a week. Because he’s a cunt. Which will result massive outcry which no politician can resist, and the new rules will be dead in the water before you’ve even started. Better to get the principle established in a small way, and then slowly increase the upper limit over time.

  12. Politics is the Art of the Possible.
1 – Shut down PHE and the mini-me’s – roll all money spent on PHE into NHS budget.
2- Immediate effect – no person paid out of taxation may be paid more than the PM PM position is top of the tree.
This applies to all local councils, charidees in receipt of public funding, boards like PHE/water boards etc etc.
3- All public pensions must be valued on exactly the same terms and conditions as DCS schemes. Your public pension is worth what it would cost you from L&G or whoever.
