Innumerate Guardian journalists

Look, we know they have problems with numbers – being all arts graduates – but this is ridiculous:

Europe Day, additional to VE day, marks the moment 50 years ago when Robert Schuman, the foreign minister of France, in a landmark speech laid the foundations for the European Union as a response to the devastation of the second world war that had ended five years earlier.

Schuman’s speech was in 1950. As anyone with a brain would realise when writing that sentence. It’s the 75th of VE day, right? 75 minus 5, as stated, is 70, not 50.

Jeez, yes, arts graduates and numbers, but really, who believed that it extended to dates?

  1. Robert Schuman, that Luxembourgish lawyer, founder of the European Coal and Steel cartel, I mean community. That Robert Schuman.

    ridiculousis ridiculous

Is this some kind of plant or animal species? Asking for an arts graduate friend.

  3. BlokeInNormandyFromTejas

..there seems to be a rash of repeated short phrases all over the Worstall domains.

It is it is probably a new side effect ov Lurgy19

  4. I remember Europe day as being between the day the germans surrendered and the day they invaded western europe.

  5. So the origins of the EU were a French plan to create peace by surrendering to the Germans long before a 3rd European war emerged?

I actually agree with the FBPE nutters that keeping the peace within Europe (ie keeping the Krauts happy so they didn’t invade France) has been an important aspect of the EU*. However they forget that NATO was originally intended to protect against both Germany and the USSR.

*of course the mutual surrender plan works very well for Belgium, The Netherlands etc and I can’t really blame them for wanting to avoid getting slaughtered again by their larger neighbour, but if you believe this is a key function of the EU, as Remoaners claim to do, how can you possibly argue the UK needs to have anything to do with it?

  6. Yes, it’s bloody annoying. The latest update of WordPress (I assume) doubles links. So:

    link link

It doesn’t do it for Richard, the code monkey. It doesn’t do it on other sites (ie, the ASI, which uses Squarespace). I’ve changed mouse so it’s not that.

    Dunno why, but it does.

  7. Coronavirus shows British–EU solidarity vital, say ambassadors

Eh, how’s that? I know ambassadors are paid to talk shite and spray Ferrero Rocher crumbs everywhere, but this is a really fucking bizarre thing to say, doncha think?

What solidarity are they talking about? Is it when the Italians and Spaniards were piling up the corpses like it was a Finnish Death Metal music video and screaming for help, and the Krauts (boooo!) and the Frogs said “NOMFUP, mateys”?

    That solidarity?

all 27 European Union ambassadors and high commissioners to the UK have asserted in an unprecedented joint statement

Imagine your masculine sinews, muscles, heart and sheer joie de tire-toi being so pathetically atrophied that you’re impressed with statements tho.

Yesterday was VE Day, a celebration of action, not gum-bumping. I celebrated by going out to throw shit at a German’s house, but I couldn’t find any Germans so had to settle for flicking V signs at Audis.

a reassertion of EU unity and the continuing relevance of European values within the UK

Such as what, cuckoldry and cowardice? Not knowing what personal hygiene is? Pretending gay little “statements” mean anything?

May I refer these honourable gentlegays to the Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks:

O sultan, Turkish devil and damned devil’s kith and kin, secretary to Lucifer himself. What the devil kind of knight are thou, that canst not slay a hedgehog with your naked arse? The devil shits, and your army eats. Thou shalt not, thou son of a whore, make subjects of Christian sons; we have no fear of your army, by land and by sea we will battle with thee, fuck thy mother.

Thou Babylonian scullion, Macedonian wheelwright, brewer of Jerusalem, goat-fucker of Alexandria, swineherd of Greater and Lesser Egypt, pig of Armenia, Podolian thief, catamite of Tartary, hangman of Kamyanets, and fool of all the world and underworld, an idiot before God, grandson of the Serpent, and the crick in our dick. Pig’s snout, mare’s arse, slaughterhouse cur, unchristened brow, screw thine own mother!

So the Zaporozhians declare, you lowlife. You won’t even be herding pigs for the Christians. Now we’ll conclude, for we don’t know the date and don’t own a calendar; the moon’s in the sky, the year with the Lord, the day’s the same over here as it is over there; for this kiss our arse!

  8. Eight days ago, it was Union Day, much more significant, the anniversary of the founding of the united Kingdom Of Great Britain.

  9. The Meissen Bison

BiNfromT – I get fatal error messages in firefox if I use the theme switcher and then can’t access the site for a while so I imagine that something is fundamentally wrong and that the doubling you’ve seen is a symptom. Same thing with the ‘posting too quick’ which is back.

Talking of symptoms, I am now inclined to think that ridiculousis ridiculous is an infection which has the government firmly in its grip. Will there be a cure? Never.

My solution has long been to just not read them.

Thanks again, Tim, for reading the Guardian so we don’t have to.

  11. I always thought the idea behind the founding of the European Coal and Steel Community back in the 50’s was to prevent the outbreak of World War One. A little late, maybe, but…

  12. “Robert Schuman, the foreign minister of France” – a German

The German Coal & Steel Community… FFwd… The German EU

Well Done for two fingers to Führer Ursula von der Leyen
Hungary’s parliament has passed a declaration against signing the Istanbul Convention on preventing and combating violence against women because it smuggles in provisions declaring gender a “social construct” and allowing “gender-based asylum claims”
