Extra bank holiday considered to make up for coronavirus lockdown

  1. Sheesh

Anyone running their own business will know that the concept of bank holidays, holidays in general and the weekend is illusory.

I’m sure all the Mon-Fri 9-5 public sector workers who have been financially untouched by this will enjoy their extra day off.

I thought the point wasn’t that Mon-Fri 9-5 public sector workers or those that have been swanning around at home on full pay or even furloughed get a day off, it’s that they’ll spend some time and money in tourist areas that were shut down?

Not that that makes it a good idea, that’s what weekends and days off re for. Besides, they’re talking about October which is an even bigger weather lottery gamble than the existing pubic holidays.

  3. BiND, if the weather is inclement people will just stay home and watch Netflix. Perhaps they will reminisce about the lockdown and have a happy-clappy session for the NHS.

  4. So do we memorialise Agincourt or Trafalgar?
The idea has been kicking around for years.
Perhaps we could give up some other bank holiday in exchange?

I can never fathom people going places on bank holidays. Every beach, zoo and pretty Cotswold village is rammed. I always tried to trade it for another day when the kids were off and go and do something.

  6. Yes. Very clever. With the economy already in the toilet, why not knock a bit more of GDP. Of course the people come up with this wankery get paid whatever, don’t they? So it has no cost.

  7. I dunno about “NHS Day”, in terms of the general contribution to the good of the population we should call it “TAWSMALC Day”…

    …Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, Sainbury’s, Morrison’s, Aldi, Lidl and Co-op…

… on which day, the above should be forced to close and give ALL their staff a day off. 🙂

  8. That’s insane, BiND. 30 people don’t work so one tosser can sell them picture postcards of Barnstaple.

    BoM4,

We’re the same, stay at home in public holidays, but then with the exception of being in the Army I’ve generally managed my own time and lived somewhere with a decent garden.

    bis,

I didn’t say I agreed with it, but yes, it is insane.

  10. But isn’t the even deadlier second wave to be unleashed in the Autumn, how can we take a day off when we will all be cowering in our homes praying the plague passes us by while our heroic health service risks their lives to keep the hospitals empty
