This democracy thing is fun isn’t it?

We’re told, endlessly, that we should have a more democratically controlled economy. It’s one of those stock phrases on the left:

More than three quarters of the public believe employers should prioritise hiring British workers rather than migrants, research has found.

The poll for Migrationwatch showed the vast majority of the public wanted employers to prioritise getting British people back to work after the covid-19 crisis.

OK, so it’s MigrationWatch, it will have been a leading question but still. How long will democratic control last if the Demos keeps asking for what it shouldn’t?

  1. “What it shouldn’t” is called technically a normative statement and colloquially as nannying.

  2. Bruttish jobs for Bruttish workers!

There is nothing you could say to me now that I could ever believe.

  3. I never had much faith in democracy, it can be a good thing but freedom prosperity and security are also nice things and in reality more important.
We have clearly reached a point where our own system is manifestly past its sell by date. It is not old; mass democracy was grafted onto a property and interest system only at the end of the 19th century.
It would be fine thing to reform the constitution. I would like the House of Lords to be given wider powers, elected partly proportionally and act as an English Chamber ( another flaw everyone can see ).
It is quite astonishing to see the contempt in which this country is held around the world
Conspicuously failing to deal with Covid ..failing every political test( see schools shambles ) blundering into a No Deal disaster only because its easier to bluster about and appearing to be run by a couple of public school bum chums unable to disengage from mutual masturbation. If that is “democracy” then it does not work

As a patriot I am utterly depressed and ashamed

  4. How on earth would one even draft such a law? We’ve seen from the U.S. that it’s nigh impossible to make a dent in the employment rate of one group over another. For example, despite all sorts of efforts at positive discrimination & affirmative action, only 2% of Big Tech employees are African-American, compared with 12% of the population.

Besides, a lot of immigrants in the UK work in pseudo-self-employed jobs, e.g. Uber driver or parcel delivery. It’s even harder to control the makeup of that workforce.

  5. Newmania, ‘Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…’

    Winston S Churchill, 11 November 1947

If we are held in such contempt, why are there people currently risking their lives to leave Afghanistan, Iran, anywhere in Africa, etc. etc. (not to mention such hell holes as France, Germany, Norway)to get here?

Also, the United States has 100 Senators and 435 Representatives to govern 330 million people. The UK has 650 MP’s and 784 unelected Lords for 67 (ish) million. We need less of these parasites and with less power, not more.

Newmania, depression seems to be a running theme…..

  6. Patriot you Facepainting CSMF SOS? PATRIOT? You are up there with Judas as a traitor –and he’d probably try to change seats if he ended up next to you in Hell’s mess hall.

  7. @Newmania “I never had much faith in democracy”

Running theme of socialism. “The stupid people don’t know what’s best for them and I do.”

  8. Addolff
The problem isn’t the size of the elected government, it’s the size of the unelected government. It’s a mouse trying to steer an elephant. If the elephant donwanna, the elephant ain’t gonna.

  9. Universal suffrage is a crap system. The Labour Party wouldn’t exist if they had to persuade actual taxpayers to vote for them.

Newmania May 28, 2020 at 8:48 am – “If that is “democracy” then it does not work”

Seems to be working to me. And if Boris manages to pull a No-Deal from the ashes of surrender, then I will take back everything I have ever said about the idiocies of modern British politics.

“As a patriot I am utterly depressed and ashamed”

As a patriot you say? As a stunningly handsome Olympic-level downhill skier who has three degrees from Oxbridge and is hung like an elephant, I believe you.

But millions of lesser men would not.

  11. So Much For Subtlety

If everyone is special, then no one is. If Britain wants to remain a community and expect people not to steal their stuff, respect their rights and do things like defend the country with gun in hand, then it has to be a community.

That means some people are a hell of a lot more special than some others.

  12. Tsk. We all know these people mean “democratic” in the German Democratic Republic sense of the word, I.e. socialist totalitarianism. They have no interest in actual democracy, except for a temporary means to an end.

  13. I never had much faith in democracy

    For once I believe you.

Over the past five years or so, the British demos has voted repeatedly to leave the European Union. The Establishment (and its semiliterate tools) is still kicking and screaming over this. And we are still not out.

I was led to understand that our Home Secretary was a cross between Spitting Image Maggie and Goebbels, yet she has thus far failed miserably to do what every opinion poll for decades has suggested the demos wants re immigration. That suggests a combination of spinelessness and a 100% hostile civil service.

If it were up to me, I’d sink the refugee boats by overloading them with Home Office civil servants. About 20 to a dinghy should do it.

  14. Over the past five years or so, the British demos has voted repeatedly to leave the European Union. The Establishment (and its semiliterate tools) is still kicking and screaming over this. And we are still not out.

The Opinion polls have shown a majority did not wish to leave for most of that period, and as everyone has finally realised know the architect of the Leave campaign is a cock gobbling liar. I am not a socialist, not even close. I`m probably about as economically Liberal as you will get in the real world.

  15. So, Newmonia, You’re broadly in favour of the German Economic Co-prosperity Sphere? Thought you would be.

  16. God help teh gayers if Nobrainia ever gets into power. “Bum chums” is not a conclusive argument against Brexit; and a “cockgobbling liar” is not a worse kind of liar (not that Cummings is – either noun or adjective.)

  17. The Meissen Bison

    I am not a socialist,not even close.

Who cares? Don’t bother with the things you’re not when you could simply rehearse the things that you are, such as Patriot (like the homonymous¹ missile)or the various suggestions you receive from your admirers here.
    _________
    1) This does not mean cock gobbling.

  18. ‘democratically controlled economy’

Controlled economy. ‘Democratically’ is totalist language to get you to accept it.

“They have no interest in actual democracy, except for a temporary means to an end.”

Exactly. They use “democracy” because YOU care, not because they do. They don’t!

“Use the terms of your enemy” – Alinski(?)

  19. Adolff: you’re forgetting the US is a federal government. They have something in the region of 2500 senators and something in the region of 16000 representatives.

  20. jgh.
Well, yeah, I was comparing Central Government / Federal level, so I didn’t count all the UK Mayors, Chairmen of District Council, Town Councillors etc. etc.
I would be interested in the numbers.

  21. Newmania self-identifies as a patriot, and who are we lesser beings to dispute his right to do so? Now, we just need to identify which country he’s a ‘patriot’ of (my money’s on Germany).

  22. “Newmania, depression seems to be a running theme…..”

He’s at stage 5 of the 7 stages of grief……….only one more stage to work through before acceptance of the new reality.

  23. I didn’t know “being a twat” was one of the stages of grief. Learn something new every day!

  24. The Durham Police have declared that Cummings did NOT break lockdown rules or “Guidance!” in driving to Durham and back. He “might have” in his trip to Barnard Castle – i.e. they don’t know enough to decide – but *if* he did it was minor.
    Rather shoots down Newmania’s rant

  25. Addolff:
    National legislature:
    UK: 650+(400-800ish)=1250ish, 19/million
    USA: 435+100=535, 1.6/million
    State legislature:
    UK: 129(Scot)+60(Wales)+90(NornIrn)+0(Eng)=278, 13.9/million (for non-England)
    USA: 2500ish+1900ish=4400ish, 13.3/million
    Mayors:
    UK: 24, not directly comparable
    USA: 1900ish, 5.7/million
    County councillors:
    UK: 12,000ish, 272/million
    USA: 60,000ish, 200/million
    City councillors:
    UK: 6,000ish, 272/million
    USA: 8000ish, 266/million

So the US has about 5000 legislators, 15/million, compared to the UK’s 1500ish. It’s fiddly to get a proper comparison as England has no legislature, but England has about 18/million – I’d call that the same as the US – rUK has about 31/million.

  26. jgh.

Many thanks for the numbers. So we have 11-12 times the number of National legislators (MP’s & Lords) per million compared to the US then.

  27. @ Newmania
The opinion polls have not shown anything – they have *reported* that a majority *said* that they did not wish to leave which just shows how biased they are since the majority demonstrated by voting that they *did* wish to leave.
Yougov tries to make its sample more representative by weighting its results by which party individuals say they voted for and which paper they read but, as The Grauniad’s circulation figures are massively boosted by the sales to public libraries (under New Labour public sector jobs were only advertised in the Guardian so local authority staff considered a Grauniad in every library to be essential) and the BBC, the views of Torquil and Jocasta are given triple the weight of Jack and Jill.

  28. “public school bum chums unable to disengage from mutual masturbation”

I think our troll is taking this projection thing a bit too literally
