Umm, well now

Michelle Obama is a class act – one of the classiest – and her intelligence and poise now look like something from a lost golden age. The publication of her globally bestselling memoir Becoming in 2018 brought her dazzlingly into the public sphere on her own terms. It gave her an international A-list status to rival her husband’s and provided Democrats and non-Trumpians around the world with a manifesto of decency and dignity to cling on to.

Might that not be just a tad hagiographic? Her actual achievements list seems to have been married to someone who was politically successful. Anything else?

  1. I think it some achievement to be able to inspire articles as sick making as that one. It is only a tv review, too.

  2. They both, always, had a patina of stardom which I for one could scarcely believe.

Back in 2008 I remember women cooing starry-eyed about how beautiful she was. It was obviously absurd, but I think they sincerely believed it.

  3. MR BRADSHAW: Oh, do not make yourself uneasy, my dear cousin, about your apparel. Lady Michelle is far from requiring that elegance of dress in us, which becomes herself and her daughter. She will not think the worse of you for being simply dressed. She likes to have the distinction of rank preserved.

Literally the only two things she’s ever done in life are:

    * Be a hulking black woman (?)

    * Collect unearned baubles and awards from effete white liberals such Peter Bradshaw desperate to demonstrate their performative wokeness

Pretending Michelle Obama is the Beyonce of politics or something is like pretending Joe Biden isn’t a senile rapist or Hillary Clinton isn’t a cunt.

It’s all patronising Magic Negro fetish totem nonsense and nauseatingly insincere virtue-twerking, mostly from creepy looking white men Michelle probably wouldn’t let inside any of her mansions.

  4. What’s that about tax fraud when xer was a hospital administrator, you know the one that removed her law licence?

  5. Well, none of those who ran for the Dem nomination look remotely viable. Gotta find an alternative quick! Hillary, but she’s a two time loser. Gotta be Michael!

  6. Her racism and hypocrisy in relation to school areas and black versus white pupils, ie white and black flight, were nicely shown by Larry Elder in one of his videos.

  7. @Longrider
‘From what I can tell, her trump card is not being Trump and not being Hilary. Er, that’s it.’
Indeed, but that is quite a strong hand at the moment.

  8. I’m surprised the programme only received a Guardian 3 star rating. Surely it merited 6 or even more.

  9. “She would probably have made a better president than Barry.”

Note that ‘better’ doesn’t mean ‘good.’

A name picked from the phone book would have been better than Barry.

‘For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country’

    That’ll get her elected.

Michelle has the strange attribute of not looking right in her clothes. Like a tranny, though I don’t think she is one.

  10. A friend of my wife’s who is a generally sensible and right-wing woman (pro-brexit etc) seems to be infatuated with Michelle Obama. She has recommended her autobiography several times. Odd – like a schoolgirl pash.

  11. Do I remember rightly that by some fluke her undergraduate dissertation at Princeton was available for the public to read?

And that those who bothered thought it a feeble thing?

Still, at least it wasn’t kept secret, in contrast to almost everything about O’s education.

  12. Dennis, Gourmand

Her sole accomplishment during her husband’s administration was fucking up school lunches.

On a side note, I wonder if Peter Bradshaw and a sandwich and a shower after writing that paragraph.

  13. Reading the Wiki article, she comes across as a rather middling lawyer. She no Eleanor Roosevelt.

  14. The Meissen Bison

The Obamas always looked to me rather like one of those adverts showing a ‘before’ and ‘after’ shot of someone using the product and it was an interesting challenge when none others presented themselves to speculate what that product might be.

Obama in office always spoke well and clearly (and possibly still does)but he was essentially a man of slight substance, rather like a vol-au-vent case or a virgin profiterole innocent of cream or chocolate sauce.

  15. Former first lady Michelle Obama lamented the lack of voter turnout for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, blaming those who stayed home for the election of President Trump.

“Every midterm. Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up,” she said. “After all that work, they just couldn’t be bothered to vote at all. That’s my trauma.”

    Poor dear.

She seems to excel at lack of insight. People don’t vote? Lazy people, not “why are we unworthy of votes”.

  16. I love the depth of insight

Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed

That’s the feature of the US system. A typical president is only able to do 1 or 2 things in his term. How many presidents have had Congress on their side for a whole term? Even if they are on your side, it’s tough to get them to do anything useful. Ask Trump

  17. Christopher Hitchens had this to say about the sainted Michelle’s thesis from when she attended Princeton:

” To describe it as hard to read would be a mistake; the thesis cannot be ‘read’ at all, in the strict sense of the verb. This is because it wasn’t written in any known language.”

  18. “Every midterm. Every time Barack didn’t get the Congress he needed, that was because our folks didn’t show up”

They’re not “your folks”, you entitled cunt. They’re individuals who choose whether to stop watching the Kardashians to go out and vote, and which of two walking disasters gets their vote. They don’t vote for you? You didn’t earn it. Do better.

Barack largely won because of who he was. Seemed like a decent guy to many people. Witty, smart. Got a lot of black voters and a lot of people who liked the idea of a black president. Some pasty white guy running for Congress doesn’t have that. And I suspect a lot of people who would volunteer for Barack wouldn’t turn out for a councillor.

  19. Her actual achievements list seems to have been married to someone who was politically successful. Anything else?

While her professional achievements are . . . well, basically in line with what would be expected from someone with her education and upbringing and do not stand out, they are, ironically, more impressive than the professional achievements of her husband.

Now, for some reason, she’s being touted as a potential Biden VP pick. The Dems keep talking about how strong women get the shaft and then they turn around, select among old white people for their nominee, pick an old white man who is representative of the status quo they claim to be trying to destroy, is an accused sexual assaulter, and now they want a woman who’s only qualification for President is that she slept in the White House for a few years.

But its the Republicans that are the party of slavery and patriarchy?
