A charity that employs 112 people

Well, actually, one that could only, possibly, max out at 112 employees.

Alarge part of Ianne Fields Stewart’s advocacy is centered on universalizing experiences that are often thought of as a luxury, thus making them accessible to members of marginalized communities. That’s one of the reasons Stewart — a queer, trans, non-binary activist — founded The Okra Project, a New York-based nonprofit that employes Black trans chefs to visit the homes of Black trans people who are experiencing food insecurity to cook them meals.

That’s really pretty specific. Chefs are 139,000 of the population. Blacks are 13.4%. Trans are 0.6% – arguable but that’s what Google says. There are therefore 112 people max who could work for these guys. Nationwide.

That’s really pretty specific.

  1. A question about universalising experiences. Isn’t a charity that provides black trannie chefs to cook for black trannies discriminatory. I may want a spade in a frock boiling okra in my kitchen. Why am I denied this universalised experience? Who do I report this to?

  2. Surely 112 is the maximum possible number? The probable number might well be 6, making it even more of a niche experience. BIS will have to wait his turn

  3. Do they only deal with “cis” black people? Don’t they realise race is a social construct and that they would be discriminating against those who identify as black.

Isn’t identifying as trans reinforcing the idea that there only 2 genders and you cross between one and the other and thereby undermining the idea that gender is a social construct.

I am obviously confused and need enlightenment

  4. It’s possible for someone who’s not a chef to become a chef. There’s a lot of cutting involved.

  5. Steamed, boiled, fried, pickled . . . it’s all good.

’employes Black trans chefs to visit the homes of Black trans people who are experiencing food insecurity to cook them meals.’

Food insecurity means they don’t have meals to cook.

What the fuck??? Do these bozos try and come up with new definitions each week, specifically to piss the rest of us off? If so, it’s working…

  7. A queer, trans, non-binary activist?

A gay bloke in a frock who might be something totally different tomorrow and expects you to pay for it.

    Dave Ward,

What the fuck??? Do these bozos try and come up with new definitions each week, specifically to piss the rest of us off? If so, it’s working…

    Yep.

Can I just say that living my poly queerness during Pride month, my blackness after Juneteenth amidst the backdrop of systematic racism and violence, and my gender after Father’s day weekend reflecting on my relationship with an abusive dad DURING A PANDEMIC IS TOO F*CKING MUCH??

Its a Twitter tread if you can stomach any more of it.

Wouldn’t the money be better spent providing them with food and letting them cook themselves. The cynic in me wonder if the the person in question may Be looking to take a fee for charity admin and for turning up to do the cooking

  10. >wouldn’t the money be better spent on food?
I suspect the program involves some kind of one-on-one tuition in home economics, in the vein of Jamie Oliver and the school dinners. An evening of teaching by a professional chef in how to budget, how to cook stuff that’s cheap but not rubbish, how to go shopping and not get ripped off, etc. etc. would probably have a far better cost/benefit than just giving someone some food.

  11. A Charity That Employs 112 People

I suspect the full extent of the operation is a bloke in a dress who goes round to his mates’ places every now and then to cook for them.

Remember that nutters who genuinely believe, despite the evidence of their prick and balls, that they are women, are the very best of the trans movement. They are at least sincere in their delusions.

The bulk of them is a collection of narcissists, perverts, narcissistic perverts, gays too fat to get laid, nonces, rapists, purple-haired soy addicts and a handful of women who hate themselves. Nothing they do will come out well.

  13. “Food insecurity?”
Bollocks, isn’t this just a black, queer, trans etc etc. dating agency? Ianne? Please.
“Queer”? I thought queer was a description we were barred from using?
These people really are fucking crackers. Whoops, bit of a Freudian whatsit there!

  14. hmm went down the rabbit hole a bit on that… i did get a giggle though when went to the instagram… no not laughing at they them per se just a neat linguistic trick. How to start your post to your black audience when gender is a bit of an open question..- Morning Siblings!

  15. Not sure that your working out is kosher here.

You assume that the proportions of chefs are the same as the general population. This may be the case but I think that is unlikely as chefs have a unique character set, just look at what our chefs are like.

Personally, I think that the numbers will be lower but that is just a guess.

  16. If they are experiencing food insecurity, wouldn’t it be better to give the food confidence building talks and counselling?

Also we need more research into what makes food insecure: sharp knives, fear of boiling water and hot fat for example?

  17. @ Lord T
Tim’s working cannot be a precise number because 0.6% only means “between 0.5501% and 0.6499%, 139000 actually means >138,500 and 13.35% and <13.45%. And that is before one thinks about whether there is any correlation between the different categorisations.
The point is that the number is so trivially small that (i) it's almost certainly less than 1 in a million (and PTerry says that it has to be *exactly* 1 in a million to qualify) of US inhabitants (ii) there are large areas of the USA where there is no tranny black chef within a day's drive to provide the service offered by the Okra Project. New York may have half-a-dozen but there probably isn't a single one in Alaska, or both Dakotas, or Montana or Wyoming or Hawaii or …
