Killer Facts!

James, the GOP Senate candidate in Michigan, is a West Point graduate, veteran and Detroit auto supplier who received President Trump’s endorsement in the state’s primary and is currently challenging sitting Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow. He is also Black. In October 2018, Mellon mad a max donation to James, per FEC records.

Michigan ranks near the bottom in terms of how CARES Act federal relief funding matches up to the number of statewide COVID-19 cases.

Mellon also donated $50,000 in August 2019 to the Scalise Leadership Fund, a PAC supporting Louisiana GOP Rep. Steve Scalise. On that same date, Mellon made maximum donations to Scalise’s campaign and a $5,000 contribution to Scalise’s “Eye of the Tiger” PAC, for a total of $60,600 in donations to Scalise-related campaign funds that day.

The median household income for Louisiana is $47,942 per year, according to latest census data.

So bloke donates to two Republican candidates. OK.

What’s this with the relief funds and median incomes?

OK, sure, this is Salon, but, whut?

  1. Eye of the Tiger is a reference to Scalise surviving the James Hodgkinson mass shooting at the Congressional softball game a few years ago.

  2. “For delivering their votes in the Federal Elections, they are awarded with yet more and more freebies: food stamps, cell phones, WIC payments, Obamacare, and on, and on, and on,” Mellon wrote. “The largess is funded by the hardworking folks, fewer and fewer in number, who are too honest or too proud to allow themselves to sink into this morass.”

    I can’t argue with that.

  3. It’s been observed regularly that large blue city cities are some of the most unequal places anywhere. It seems to be true. Severe zoning restrictions limit housing and while long time home owners might garner hundreds of thousands in equity as a result the newbies are less likely to ever buy a house. Often the blue cities promulgate policies that drive industry that actually requires blue collar workers from their states and the workers eventually also move away.

In theory, if you could drive everyone from your state who wasn’t a hedge fund manager, technology whiz, rock star, movie star, of high end lawyer, wouldn’t you have a state with high average income and wouldn’t that prove the merits of progressive policies?

  4. What’s this with the relief funds and median incomes?

The implication is that these guys got donations around what most people are making a year – that both the receiver is being bought and that that money could have been better used in a ‘more social’ (meaning ‘supporting whatever I like at the moment’) thing.

Its there to ‘shock’ the conscious of Salon readers at the profligacy.

  5. Isn’t that more smoke and mirrors to fling around dissociated facts to try and discredit the Opposing Side’s candidates?

The author’s real beef is already in the first paragraph: Rich Bloke supporting Evil Republicans Said “Bad Things” About Blacks.
The rest of the article is a mess of factoïds that read as poo flung by a frustrated chimp. Which would be an insult to the chimp, if the chimp actually would care.

  6. ‘Mellon wrote in his self-published memoir — “The Intriguing Story of Tim Mellon” — that Black people were “even more belligerent” after the civil rights movement, and that safety net programs amounted to “Slavery Redux.”

People on federal assistance, he wrote, were “slaves of a new Master, Uncle Sam.”‘

    Truth is an adequate defense.

Sollenberger’s indictment is for “You can’t say that!,” not for factual errors.

And how can you brand him racist when he capitalized ‘Black?’
