The government’s next step must be to move towards its well-received manifesto commitment to make £9.2bn available to such projects. To ensure this becomes a political priority, it is crucial to realise the vast number of jobs in every constituency that such a programme would entail.

As jobs are a cost, not a benefit, the way to increase support for my scheme is to remind everyone how expensive it is.

  1. From the perspective of a politician: when unemployment is high, jobs are a benefit, not a cost. We are governed by politicians, not by classical economists.

  2. Printing money becomes a disaster at some point. Trying to erode a potential 7 million on the dole by Xmas is a bridge way too far if creating funny money is all you got.

  3. Andrew M,

The problem is that it doesn’t actually work. It sounds good to people, but if you take £30 off people, that’s £30 they can’t use for the things they want. So, you create jobs building high speed rail, but maybe single women buy less sex toys (which destroys jobs there).

  4. Y’all should get back to making Avro Lancasters.

No! No! No! THIS IS NOT HOW YOU DO PROJECTS.

As I posted at tallblokes on EC project money:

“Projects start with an idea. The idea is developed. Agreement is reached that it is worthwhile. You then seek financing. You have to convince the people with the money that it is a good idea.”

Announcing that you have money for projects is completely fvcking backwards. NFW any project will succeed.

Academic research these days: A pot of money is available… to fund research into… (in practice, research shows that…) applications are invited… result policy based evidence making.
Worthless unless, taking a selfish point of view, it’s you who got the grant.
