Old woman shocker!

Julia Sawalha (born 9 September 1968)

Hmm:

Sawalha posted a statement on social media saying she was told a week ago that she was not wanted for the sequel. “The reason they gave is that my voice now sounds ‘too old’ and they want a younger actress to reprise the role.”

Amazing, innit? Old bird not plucked to play young bird. What is the world coming to?

  1. Saffy darling is nearly 52? I swear somebody tears pages out of the calendar while I’m not looking.

  2. In fairness, some of the children on the Simpsons were voiced by the elderly Russi Taylor. So they could at least give her a voice test.

  3. As Mel Gibson will not be reprising his role as Rocky perhaps the talented Laurence Fox will be invited to audition.

  4. “The reason they gave is that my voice now sounds ‘too old’ and they want a younger actress to reprise the role.”

I’m shocked that they can actually tell her that.

  5. Julia’s voice is pretty much the same so that would have immediately raised hackles and suspicions. Most likely Julia’s not got the star power they’re looking for to pull in audiences. If they’ve got the budget from Netflix they’ll want an A lister to have the lead. What’s funny/sad is that Julia’s using the language of “unfair dismissal” for a gig she had 20 years ago. Luvvies please don’t ever change.

  6. I translated this as “I’m too expensive, too outspoken, and too troublemaking, so they picked a younger, cheaper actress who would just get on with the job without making a fuss. Boo Hoo”

Yeah, I suspect that’s the truth of it. There’s companies like Disney and Pixar who don’t have to use names, because the brand gets people in, but a lot of animation does. It’s not a huge deal but it helps.

The other thing is that it’s not exactly one of those great distinctive voice performances. Like you wouldn’t replace Eddie Murphy as Donkey in Shrek or James Earl Jones as Darth Vader. Notably, they’re bringing Jane Horrocks back for the sequel who is more of a voice actor, despite ageism 😉

  8. ” The other thing is that it’s not exactly one of those great distinctive voice performances” – there’s that too, yes. and Jane Horrocks is indeed in another league. Also if i was netflix/aardman i’d get a voice test from the crown princess of the south saxons just to get her clucky english accent on tape for posterity.

  9. , including an accusation of antisemitic comments by actor Winona Ryder,

Ah, *that’s* what got him. Not the totally substantiated drunken rant captured on camera?

  10. She’s always made me go all wobbly inside, no matter what her age. She’s part of that privileged tight-knit group of mature women. Nigella L, Kim W, Keren W.

  11. Menachem- KimW? Do you mean Kim Woodburn (Scouse cleaner to the stars)? Or Kim Wilde (who had a pleasurable effect on this chap in his teenage years)?
