But the feuding, double dealing and murder depicted in the Scottish play has been superceded by a real-life battle at Cawdor Castle between one of the earl’s descendants and his stepmother.
Colin Campbell, the seventh Earl of Cawdor, was enraged after the dowager duchess Lady Angelika Cawdor, applied to build an events, exhibition and banqueting venue in the castle’s garden.
Quite how the widow of an Earl becomes a dowager duchess is unknown. She is, of course, a dowager countess.
Theoretically possible I suppose, if she subsequently married a Duke and he died too.
True, and having looked it up, didn’t.
This got me idly wondering if there was a male equivalent of dowager, I know there’s not many titles passed down the female side but I suppose it could happen. And what would Prince Phillip become if the Queen dies first? King Father doesn’t sound right.
The Internet seems confused, many answers don’t seem to know that a dowager if female.
Perhaps commenters here are netter informed?
Telegraph subs once knew how to spell ‘supersede’ as well.
What a pendantry fest!
Someone styled Lady Angelika Cawdor would be the daughter of a duke as any fule no who has read Dorothy L Sayers. She should correctly be styled the Dowager Lady Cawdor.

“Perhaps commenters here are netter informed?”
Meaning get their info online and not from physical publications?

Papua New Guinea probably has this covered, at least in pidgin. When Prince Charles visited PNG, he was introduced as ‘nambawan pikinini bilong Mises Kwin’. That is, the first child of Her Majesty the Queen.
So would that make Prince Phillip on the death of the Queen, “Nambawan man-wif bilong late Mises Kwin”?
Also a double comma catastrophe: it shouldn’t be “Lady Angelika Cawdor, applied to build an events, exhibition and banqueting venue in the castle’s garden” but rather ‘Lady Angelika Cawdor applied to build an events, exhibition, and banqueting venue in the castle’s garden’.
Hrmph!
Still a double comma catastrophe for those of us know ho0w to write & weren’t educated at some dump near Reading.
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was Queen…… because she used to be Queen Elizabeth, so Dowager Philip would be Prince Philip the…. For the second part, I think it would be Prince Father not King Father as it describes him not his son.
However, Dowager Prince Philip has a nice ring to it.
BiND: Prince Philip wold be be Dowager Prince Consort. Ferdinand of Aragon, who married Isabella of Castile, was King of Aragon and Dowager King-Consort of Castile after her death, according to https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-male-equivalent-of-a-Queen-Dowager
jgh,
But dowager specifically refers to widow, although in the day and age when you self identify as anything he could become a dowager if he wanted.
Since a male widow is a widower, perhaps a male dowager should be a dowag?
