Presumably pay rates for influencers have fallen

Kim Kardashian to freeze Instagram account over hate speech on platform

No one’s ever going to accuse the lady of financial ignorance. So, to put at risk the income from posting we should probably assume that the income has or is about to fall. Thus the price of not gaining it falls below the benefit of posturing.

  1. Does this follow?

It could be that the publicity this posturing generates results in more audience hence revenue in the long term and this suffices to outweigh the loss of income in the short term. (Or similarly, that failing to participate in a group boycott brings negative publicity that results in a fall in long-term audience, so non-participation is riskier/more costly than participating.)

Or it could be that she’s doing something she believes in and is a utility maximiser rather than cold hard cash maximiser. You never know, even slebs need to live with themselves, and goodness knows how much that costs.

  2. So Much For Subtlety

I wonder if it has anything to do with Kanye? Did it turn off a significant number of her followers? Is the hatred aimed at Kanye?

She is selling a fantasy. That is why people follow her. But because of the election, suddenly her shit got real.

  3. She’s not posting for a single day. I think both her income and Instagram’s/Facebook’s income will survive this major setback.

    It’s just galactic level virtue-signalling.

  4. There’s an interesting tweet from Sacha Baron Cohen on this:-

“Amazing – every hour, more people are joining tomorrow’s Instagram freeze to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit

Advertisers, FB employees and users are fed up.”

Users actually aren’t that bothered, or they’d stop following people or just leave the platform. This is really about that first lot, and it isn’t even about “hate” or “misinformation”, it’s about making content that keeps target markets (affluent 18-34s) looking at content. They really want it polished to them. They get this with TV. OK, it’s not explicit, it’s not advertisers telling them what to make, but effectively that’s the result.

It’s a real dichotomy with social media, that to make a network work depends on massive numbers of users of all types, but advertisers want the Trump supporters driven out (and not for ideological reasons, but because they aren’t good marks for advertising).

The aim is to drive the right off social media so that Trump will lose the election.

The 1% are bullying Facebook into compliance.

  6. Mr E
Looks like the arse has dropped out of her business.

Have you got that the right way round. Isn’t her arse what she’s famous for?

  7. Dennis: Oppressor, Warmonger, Capitalist and Consumer of Petroleum Products

Freezing the accounts for a whole 24 hours? Wow. What balls.

  8. So the celebs are shutting out their plebs from their comfortable, self-affirming echo chambers….

I’d like to be an optimist and hope that this will cause their followers to actually look around outside it for a day…
But then I realise the level of morosity you need to even “follow” these “celeb” nitwits….

    Ah well…. There’s always cleansing fire….
