The Han Chinee are racist, see?

Perfume brand Jo Malone has apologised to the actor John Boyega for cutting him out of an advert he conceived, directed and starred in when it was launched in China.

Boyega was replaced by Liu Haoran after the commercial was recast and reshot for the Chinese market. The original advert, London Gent, which was released last year, featured Boyega walking around Peckham, south London, riding a horse, dancing with friends and hanging out with his family. The original cast was multicultural, while the Chinese remake featured no black cast members.

“We deeply apologise for what on our end was a mistake in the local execution of the John Boyega campaign,” Jo Malone said in the statement to the Hollywood Reporter.

If you’re trying to sell stuff to people you have to go with their beliefs, their prejudices, not your own. Otherwise you’ll not persuade people to buy your stuff.

Just one of those things….

  1. The original cast was multicultural, while the Chinese remake featured no black cast members.

Is the Chinese remake Han Chinese only, or the original “multicultural” cast with the one black guy replaced by someone from China? Because if it’s the latter, the remake is still “multicultural”.

Note that the original Guardian piece didn’t let us judge for ourselves, as opposed to this article.

  2. “I need you to understand how painful it is to be reminded every day that your race means nothing!”

We only know Boyega exists because he was selected to tick a diversity box requiring a black character. The character serves no other purpose which is why it was not developed. His real pain is that his race meant everything and he meant nothing.

    The horrible thing about Tiggers
Is that Tiggers are horrible things
Their lips are made out of rubber
Their bodies are covered in blings.
They’re game to shag any scrubber
    Gun, gun, gun, gun, gun!
But the most terrible thing about Tiggers is
That there’s a lot more than one
    Tiggers are dangerous fellas
    Tiggers are awfully ‘street’
    Ev’ryone el-us is jealous
    That’s why I repeat… and repeat

    The terrible thing about Tiggers
Is Tiggers are stabby young chaps!
They’re loaded their guns with hair triggers
They love to steal nice car hubcaps!
    They’re unappealing, drug-dealin’, or stealin’,
    Gun, gun, gun, gun, gun!
But the most terrible thing about Tiggers is
That there’s a lot more than one

  4. Just Chinese? You can add Russians, Japanese & pretty well everybody else in SE Asia, Indians… It would be easier to make a list of cultures that do welcome & value people of African origin. The English speaking nations, parts of Europe? S. America they’re there, but hardly valued. The bottom rung on the social ladder.
Not palatable for liberal multiculturalists. But that’s how the cookie crumbles.

  5. It would be easier to make a list of cultures that do welcome & value people of African origin. The English speaking nations, parts of Europe

Hmmm. I don’t think we in the UK “welcome & value people of African origin”, rather we simply take people as we find them. If the peeps who come into our communities do so in a legal manner (not riding the Channel in dinghies), behave as good neighbours, obey the law and pay their taxes then, for the most part we don’t give a hoot if they’re Nigerians, Somalis or Martians.

  6. @Mr Galt
The “welcome & value” was a tad tounge in cheek. We’re told to welcome & value & generally go along with the fiction. Why this regrettable state of affairs prevails, I haven’t a clue. But 9 out of 10 cats…

And before somebody starts with the WACIST! accusations, her across the breakfast table is hardly devoid of African origins. Never been a problem to me. But to consensually ignore reality hardly achieves anything.

  7. Couldn’t they just say “because we realised he’s an overpromoted charisma vacuum”, which is also true? I’d be surprised if he’s shifting much stuff here, either.

  8. ‘Jo Malone has apologised to the actor John Boyega’

Agree with John 7:55 am. He’s just a fvcking actor. Why on earth would you apologize to him?

And the fact that you feel you should suggests avoiding others like him in the future. The apology is an expression of something. That something is to be avoided.

Blacks are having fun with this shtick now, but in the long run, it will be fatal. Burning Portland is no way to make a future for yourself. White leftists aren’t doing themselves any favors supporting it, either.

Decadence ends when they break down your gate.

  9. I though adverts, TV shows, theatre, government etc etc were meant to reflect the make up of their community? Well in China, that is Chinese people.

  10. Truth is, BoM4, ads with his mug in them possibly shift less product than an equivalent white actor. But when did advertising companies act in the interests of their clients? Woke is everything.

  11. ‘How many ads on Nigerian TV have Chinese people in them?’

Never bothered to look at Nigerian TV Jim. But my guess is, of course, zero.

  12. “Imagine the Chinese not wanting to smell like an African. Racist!”

Why would anyone want to smell like an African?

  13. ” Why would anyone want to smell like an African?”

The only reason you wouldn’t want to smell like an African is racism. Please report for re-education.

  14. Bloke in North Dorset

“The only reason you wouldn’t want to smell like an African is racism. Please report for re-education.”

But wouldn’t smelling like an African be cultural appropriation? In which case that’s a call for re-education,

  15. There’s already been a fuss because the poster for the Star Wars film in which he appeared was altered for the Chinese market: his character image was so reduced in size you almost needed a magnifying glass to see it.

“Burning Portland is no way to make a future for yourself. White leftists aren’t doing themselves any favors supporting it, either”

    Shh, don’t tell them!

  17. Hallowed, thanks for posting the actual comparison.

Looks like Boyega wasn’t actually cut out the way they make it sound – the whole ad was entirely re-shot. So all the whites and south asians and the token oriental and everyone else was cut out. About the only thing retained was the general aesthetic, the horse, the bicycles and weird glance.

Meh. Forget Nigerian TV – when British TV adverts contains purely original Chinese casts for Chinese made goods, then maybe we can complain about being edited out over there.

Poor Boyega, one of those Star Wars blaster shots must have dislodged the chip on his shoulder.

  18. Good point, RichardT.

“Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.” — Napoleon Bonaparte (or Sun Tzu, or others)

  19. A large chunk of the original Star Wars was lifted from Japanese films such as the Hidden Fortress. No Japanese people to be seen.

    This is all getting ridiculous.

  20. “This is all getting ridiculous.”

Amen. An excellent TV football announcer – Chris Collingsworth – got fired for saying, “I came here to announce a football game.” Even after a declaration of orthodoxy.

Seems NFL isn’t about football, anymore. I like football; I’ll watch it. I won’t watch millionaires telling me I have to end racism.
