This logic requires some work

Overall, the price range for users under 30 was typically lower than for those over 30: the former being charged between $6.99 and $16.71 per month for the service, the latter being charged between $14.99 and $34.37.

The cheapest deal, at $6.99, was offered to queer females aged under 30. City-based straight men over 50 were meanwhile given the most expensive rate, at $34.37. Choice investigators could not find a pattern to explain the differences,

Err, the pattern is that older cis and het males get to pay more. As is true of everything of course.

  1. Higher charges for what you have most of and lower for what you have least of. If they had loads of gold diggers and few sugar daddies the pricing would be the other way around.

  2. It’s all about demand for the demographic. The more in demand demographics encourage more activity from users want to meet them. I’ve had a Tinder account for a year, now.* I profile as a single hetero male in his 60s. The amount of likes & messages I get from stunningly attractive girls in their 20s who favour tiny swimming costumes is phenomenal. At least one or two a day. I hadn’t considered up grading the account to TinderPlus but maybe Tinder would pay me to do so.

*An experiment to validate an hypothesis.

  3. I’m assuming this isn’t a compulsory service, so it’s a question of market forces. 50ish White males will be the richest and most desperate. Don’t like it, don’t join.

That seems exactly backwards. Single men in the City encourage more customers so you charge them more? You should charge them less. They are generating a demand.

Yes that would make sense. If you were being spammed by real girls. The thing to do is look at Ashley Madison. Didn’t their model depend on lots of employees pretending to be nubile young things in order to sucker more male customers?

The logic is likely to be that simple – single men want to get laid. They will pay. Charge them more. Lesbians don’t give a damn. They won’t. Charge them less.

  5. “Yes that would make sense. If you were being spammed by real girls.”

Oh, they’re definitely real girls. There’s some of them I already knew. Of course the profile photos can be a bit optimistic or maybe not precisely the person of the profile. But you could say the same about mine.
Oh, no doubt there’s some that are outright scams. The demonstrated stupidity of so many blokes makes that inevitable.

  6. BiS,
I also attract the attention of young, attractive girls on the local hookup site. Some of them helpfully attach a scale of charges as well.

  7. I believe the ladies on Ashley Madison turned out to be overwhelmingly either hookers or employees posing as horny babes. Until that story broke I always wondered why women would feel the need to go that route, then it was “Ah, the reason it didn’t make sense is because it doesn’t make sense”.

  8. Isn’t it possible to specify an age range on these things? Some years ago I toyed with signing up for a online dating agency, and specified a range of my age +/- five years (so, 50s), but kept getting posts from people born in the 1980s so in their 30s. They were born *after* *I* *left* *school*! That feels, well, the only word I can think of is “dirty”. I want to meet somebody who knows Bagpus, Pipkins, Magic Roundabout, It’s Friday it’s Five To Five…

  9. Esteban,
It makes perfect sense. Women join those sites for the attention. Doesn’t mean they’re going to hook up with any of them.

    jgh,
I have the opposite problem. I’ve set a max age of 49 but I get lots of messages from silver haired grannies looking for a nice man with a good pension.

  10. BiS ‘An experiment to validate an hypothesis’ yeah, right!

By the way, is it now OK to refer to homosexualists as ‘queer’? Only I can’t keep up.

  11. Jgh, indulging your perversions for bagpuss and magic roundabout is what would be dirty.

Wearing a squirrel suit is mainstream by comparison.

  12. “BiS ‘An experiment to validate an hypothesis’ yeah, right!”

No. Entirely genuine research, Rowdy. Other commentators here will know why.

  13. “I also attract the attention of young, attractive girls on the local hookup site. Some of them helpfully attach a scale of charges as well.”

That’s what I like to see. Good professional behaviour. It’s the amatuers will end up costing you a fortune.

  14. Bis,
Too true about the amateurs. We have girls here on the hook up site only pretending to hookers to meet mugs. Bloody nuesance.
