Feds to execute a woman for the first time in more than six decades

How many times was she executed before the 6 decade gap?

I(t is good to see the Trump administration fighting against all sort of gender discrimination. Personally, I am appalled by what has been called (by sexists on the internet) as the “pussy pass”. Equality demands that women are executed at the same rate as men. It is an outrage that executions have been so lop sided.

In fact I would go further and demand a total moratorium on the execution of men until an equal number of women have been executed to make up for this historical injustice.

  2. Those of us who do feel that the death penalty is meritted in some cases are probably ambivalent as giving the state the power to summarily execute is a bad thing. The is especially the case when one sees so many cases of wrongful conviction, or worse, police making up or suppressing evidence. In such cases, I think that serious punishment should be meted out to ‘bent coppers’.

As it is likely that the death of Dr Kelly was a state assassination, perhaps Labour Prime Ministers already have the power, and it’s one of the reasons we should never have another..

That is incoherent and of course wrong. The British state does, it seems, give MI-5 and the like the power to summarily execute but that is not what is an execution is. There is nothing summary about it. There is a long process to decide on guilt.

Those of us? Yeah. Right. Look if you do not support the death penalty then be honest and come out and admit you don’t.

Likely is carrying an awfully heavy load in that sentence. But Britain does not have the death penalty. Did not when Dr Kelly decided to top himself. So it seems you are not only talking out your fundament, but you are confusing two separate issues. If the State has the power to summarily kill, despite the law, then we have a problem. But that is nothing to do with the death penalty.

You just wanted to get that idiotic crack in, right?

  4. While federal executions are few and far between, states have executed 16 women since the practice was resumed in 1976. 10 of those during Democrat administrations and 6 during Republican administrations. Indeed this is the first time during the current administration. Therefore crediting DJT with picking up the pace is misleading.

  5. I missed my vocation as a hangman. Albert Pierrepoint was a great man. Social hygiene is a sacred calling.

  6. The data available on the impact of the “suspension” of the death penalty for capital murder by Woy Jenkins showed that it resulted in an increase in the number of innocent people murdered in just four years that was a multiple of (IIRC) six times the total number of (?almost) all guilty people executed since the concept of “capital murder” was introduced in the UK.
But no-one in the media seems to care about the murders of the innocent – Herod rules OK in Grauniadland.

  7. Apparently she’s only the 4th US Federal execution of a woman ever. But then I looked at what she did and blimey, that was nasty.

For the record, the previous 3 were for:
    1) conspiracy in the Lincoln assassination;
    2) nuclear secrets to the Russkies (Mrs Rosenberg); and
    3) that nasty kidnapping where they’d killed the rich bloke’s nipper before even asking for the ransom.

  8. “ The resumption of federal executions started July 14, with the execution of former white supremacist Daniel Lewis Lee.[…] Anti-death penalty groups say President Donald Trump is pushing for executions during the campaign season in a bid to burnish a reputation a law-and-order leader.”

So Trump is even worse than we thought. Not only is he a white supremacist but also he executes white supremacists for electoral advantage! Or he thinks people who do terrible things should be permanently removed from society.

  9. I’m as far from a US constitutional expert as you can get, but does the Pres have a say in executions? My understanding (from movies) is that it’s the state Governor from whom the last minute pardon arrives (or doesn’t).

  10. @CM

No claimed expertise here either but…

Difference in this case is that it’s a federal execution (ie for a federal crime, prosecuted in a federal court) not a state one, and Trump explicitly sought to get federal executions up and running again.

Re state executions – I believe some states (Georgia?) have their constitutions set up so Governors have no right to prevent executions in that manner. But generally I think you’re right.

  11. Federal stuff is done by the Feds and thus with executions it’s the Pres who is the final arbiter of mercy or not. The vast majoirty of the justice system is state and thus governors.

  12. Thanks, that makes sense. So her ‘mistake’ was to drive from Kansas to Missouri (and back) to carry out her killing.
