It’s amazing how racist liberal America can be

This is the flip side of our oft agreed observation that while the UK isn’t perfect it is one of the less racist places on the planet. Well, outside the Jezza wing of the Labour Party it is at least. Take this from a Brit who moved to Portland:

The first surprise was the lack of non-white people. I later discovered that the 2010 census found Portland to be the whitest big city in the US. When our daughter started daycare, she came home and said she didn’t like her brown skin; she wanted to be white like the other kids. She was three. I felt like a fool for moving her out of a city where she would have been surrounded by people who look like her.

Living in Portland was also the first time I felt noticed for being in a mixed-race marriage.

“Mixed race marriage” is something so common as to be not remarked upon – almost – in London these days.

  1. What kind of idiot moves to a new country and only then discovers that the locals are the wrong colour?

  2. felt like a fool for moving her out of a city where she would have been surrounded by people who look like her.

Wait, so diversity isn’t Our Greatest Strength?

  3. Sorry BiS–Blojob announcing 2nd LD just as Great Paid Holiday ends (=even more businesses that might have soldiered on will jack it in and many more PEOPLE to dole)can only mean this is a co-ordinated plan. It is not possible to be as thick as Blojob would have to be.

Will be defying LD and ALSO not paying Council tax from end of this month. If anybody has any links to Council Tax resistance info–would be glad of the link. North Jnr did some good work their but can’t find the info at present.

  4. A few things strike my fancy here. First, the author “felt noticed” for being in a mixed race marriage – perhaps it was all in their head? If you’re freaked out because everybody in Portland is white, you’re halfway to “did he look at me funny”?

Tim notes that a mixed marriage wouldn’t be remarked upon in London, but note that here it’s a Brit who’s stirred up about it based on “feeling noticed”.

For a 3 year old to feel out of place due to a distinguishing characteristic – only one with brown skin, being a ginger, hand me down clothes, etc. – is understandable. But if your parent is all wound about race to begin with you may be a wee bit predisposed.

  5. . . . [Doom] can only mean this is a co-ordinated plan. It is not possible to be as thick as Blojob would have to be.

He’s a feckless politician. It really is possible.

. . . not paying Council tax from end of this month. If anybody has any links to Council Tax resistance info . . .

    Look before you leap.

  6. Jonathan firing on all cylinders today. I’ve always sided with the Greeks on Turkey. When my dad was stationed in Cyprus in 1964-65, he came to realise very early on which side were the fucking animals. My great grandfather in the Caucasus campaign learned the same thing half a century earlier.

  7. Candy don’t look all that black to me. But she needs a chip on her shoulder to be a Guardian writer. Daughter Lydia pictured looks even less black.

‘she came home and said she didn’t like her brown skin; she wanted to be white like the other kids’

And how many white kids told their mothers they wish they had Lydia’s skin?

Candy is mental. Portlandia is perfect for her.

BWTM: ‘Portlanders now had three reasons to wear a mask: coronavirus, police teargas and deadly smoke.’

    FO, Candy.

  8. My own view on contemporary racism in the UK, for what its worth, is practical. When you turn up for an interview, a number of assumptions will be made about you based on your appearance.
If you have physical traits which may have negative connotations you would be wise to ensure you speak, dress and prepare in such a way as to re-assign any such assumptions. In England, your accent will be vital. Twas ever thus. Overall a great deal is made of quite a small thing IMHO.

This reasonable, if imperfect, state of affairs, was delivered largely by ordinary people getting on with it ,meeting playing music sport, doing business together. I am not at all convinced that an event like “Black History Month” are entirely helpful and at least, if we are to have this, “Conversation” , let people speak, even those whose views may be repulsive.

  9. PJF–Well got to do something. Cant just sit back while Johnson fucks us over again.

I think there will be millions of refuseniks this time. Great Paid Holiday ends at the stroke of midnight today. And the Ghost of Christmas Future will be showing a lot of LD 1 playtimers some very bleak days in the LD2 time that is before us. I don’t think Blojob will have things all his own way. Scuttlebutt is that he didn’t even tell his own fuckwit cabinet about his LD2 plans.

  10. ” Jonathan firing on all cylinders today. ”

    Tips Fedora, bows…..

” I’ve always sided with the Greeks on Turkey.”

    Me too.
I’ve visited Turkey many times and, up until the rise of Erdogan, most of the Turks were ok. After his election, I noticed a marked increase in hostility generally and the last time I went, I was stopped by immigration and given a bit of a hard time so decided ” F**k ’em” and haven’t been since.

(I do want to bring the Byzantine Empire back though….)

  11. Also one of Blojob’s twitter entries–the latest–about he& his gf blowing hard at some Sunday night celebration of the NHS has been removed.

Interesting–maybe too much slagging of his creature or maybe….

  12. My own view on contemporary racism in the UK, for what its worth, is practical

You’re not looking for a valuation, are you, Pneumie?

  13. “What kind of idiot moves to a new country and only then discovers that the locals are the wrong colour?”

Precisely – it beggars belief that someone would emigrate without (apparently) visiting first. And not just the colour of the residents – there are many other aspects of daily life which I would want to be sure of before making the leap.

  14. “This reasonable, if imperfect, state of affairs, was delivered largely by ordinary people getting on with it ,meeting playing music sport, doing business together. At this point, BHM is just performant.

The thing with most white liberals is that they rarely do that stuff. There’s a photo of the Guardian offices, in London, one of the least white places on the planet, and there’s 1 Indian looking guy tucked away like a Where’s Wally picture. Same with publishing, cinema, politics.

They look down on the working classes, even though every factory I know is like the United Colours of Benetton and everyone gets on just fine.

But as Timmy keeps pointing out: socialists are the most conservative and backward looking of anyone in this country.

  15. Getting back on topic…

’… in May, Portland, like many other cities, held nightly Black Lives Matter protests in response to the killing of George Floyd. Thousands of people gathered in predominantly peaceful protests, but small groups who damaged property grabbed headlines and the president’s attention.’

Yes, when mobs are looting and burning, people do then to notice, love.

  16. We have a return ticket booked; we just have to decide if we’ll use it.

    – hmm and also grandma slightly less useful when the kid’s 8.

  17. It’s like moving to England and complaining about lack of mixer taps, lovely carpets in the bog, single glazing and driving on the wrong side of the road.

  18. Its funny how their mixed race kid and mixed race marriage would have passed with so little notice in Montgomery, compared to Portland.

And, living in Portland, they’re going to find out how racist white people really can be. Southerners are pikers compared to liberals. Racist southerners just want you to go away. White liberals want to *remake* you.

  19. Greetings from peaceful Portland, the whitest city in America with over 500K inhabitants, a result of the early settlement of Oregon by refugees from the Klan. Blacks were not allowed in Oregon until well into the 20th Century (?) and it has taken a long time for the racist idiots to die off and be replaced by us liberals.

Sadly some racists still infest the place and it is not perfect yet.

I will mention that it amused we Portlanders greatly to see the hysterical coverage of the supposed ‘chaos’ in the streets here over the summer. It was very much as if a bunch of kids had taken over Trafalgar Square in London and as a result pundits proclaimed London was in chaos, while a block away mums and kids are walking down the street eating ice cream.

  20. Dennis, Pointing Out The Obvious

What’s interesting about the article is not what it reveals, but what it hides.

Pires claims she’s ready to quit Portland because of Trump, Proud Boys and the police, when what is actually ravaging Portland is Antifa, BLM and the elected (Democrat) officials that enable them. I’m sure she knows this, but it is obvious she’s more concerned with virtue signalling (and maintaining status in her tribe) than intellectual honesty.

Just another lefty who can’t cope with reality.

  21. Dennis: Oppressor, Warmonger, Capitalist and Consumer of Petroleum Products

Greetings from peaceful Portland, the whitest city in America with over 500K inhabitants, a result of the early settlement of Oregon by refugees from the Klan.

Pure, unadulterated bullshit. Portland popped up in the 1830s. People moved there because of the burgeoning timber industry. The KKK wasn’t founded until 1865.

Blacks were not allowed in Oregon until well into the 20th Century (?) and it has taken a long time for the racist idiots to die off and be replaced by us liberals.

Also bullshit. The first exclusion law was passed in 1844 and repealed in 1845. The second exclusion law was passed in 1849 and was ruled unconstitutional in 1853 by the territorial supreme court when slavery was outlawed in the territory. The third exclusion law was passed in 1857 and repealed in 1926. According to Wikipedia there are no records of the law ever being enforced.

Also bullshit. Portland has experienced one death, nearly 1,000 arrests and over $25 million in property damage that are a direct result of the protests.

Mr. Fuller is either a troll or a moron… but he ain’t in Portland, that’s for sure.

  22. Dennis, He Of The Gently Sloping Forehead

My own view on contemporary racism in the UK, for what its worth, is practical.

There are few things funnier than Newmania trying to strike a thoughtful pose…

  23. If she wanted to be in a more diverse environment she should have moved to a southern state where American blacks have been moving in droves.

The States is actually full of Brits who don’t really like it here, but most of them remain, probably for the money, grumbling all the while that it should be more like England. Same with Australia. I don’t think there’s a single Guardian writer living in the US that doesn’t hate it, but do they leave? No. It’s nice to see one who didn’t like it return home.

It’s funny. Day in and day out I live and work with people born elsewhere who enjoy their life here. In fact, I’m an immigrant myself though I was a child when my family emigrated. The Brits, however, don’t seem to enjoy it, but they stay.

  24. Believe me, I'm a liberal

Jonathan needs calling out on this story about muslim demonstrators outside the French embassy in London. I’ve been right through the BBC (envy of the world) website – right down to Local News, London – and there’s no mention of it anywhere. Never happened. It must be #fakenews I tell you. #fakenews!!!

  25. Dennis, Understated As Always

The States is actually full of Brits who don’t really like it here, but most of them remain, probably for the money, grumbling all the while that it should be more like England.

Yup. Even in the backwaters of Central Ohio they are to be found; bitching about this, whining about that. And you ask them why the fuck they’re here they just give you a blank stare.

You can take to wog out of wogland, but you can’t take the wogland out of the wog.

  26. Thos. Fuller: it amused we Portlanders

It seems somehow unpatriotic to avoid using US or is this how liberals from Oregon are taught to write and speak?

  27. “Sadly some racists still infest the place and it is not perfect yet.”

A racist behind every tree. But they are clever: as you move, they move back around the tree, so you never see them.

  28. Seems ‘far right’ claims BLM rioters were bussed in probably true then

    @Witchie
    Happy Halloween

    @Esteban
Spot on. I thought exactly the same. Notable she didn’t say “my daughter suffered racist abuse a school”.

She’s implying Portland is racist because not enough blacks live there (same as BBC and ‘the country’). Race baiter looking for perceived racism

    @Jussi
Re Taps: long time ago, without regulation, plumbers started installing hot on left, cold on right – spread all over UK. Reason: help blind, poor sighted with no glasses, poor lighting

    @Dennis
    +10 Thank you

    @Believe
Wink. I saw reports on RoPers protesting outside the French embassy in London yesterday

Erdogan fuelled it by doing a mass rally and saying Macron was an islamaphobe

BBC: France Face Far Right Backlash After Mostly Peaceful Beheadings

  29. @ Newmania
Yes, prejudices will be alerted as soon as one opens one’s mouth: I too, having won scholarships to Public School and Oxford have suffered from them. It is ridiculous to assume that only the rich are prejudiced – the hard-left indulge their prejudices with violence.
I like(d) the (admittedly few) genuine aristocrats with whom I have worked, partly because they felt no need to act as if they were prejudiced but mostly because they seemed to be genuinely nice guys.

  30. “Black Lives Matter and Antifa are looking for any reason to burn your city down. And Democrat mayors and governors are looking for any reason to allow them to burn your city down because they believe this helps them politically.” – Nolte

“I will mention that it amused we Portlanders greatly to see the hysterical coverage of the supposed ‘chaos’ in the streets here over the summer.”

    Nothing to see here.

“Businesses are leaving,” Andrew Hoan, president and CEO of the Portland Business Alliance (PBA), told KATU.

“The financial consequences to the downtown corridor are a running calculation that is almost impossible to wrap your mind around,” he said — with one company already saying the riots have cost $20 million in damage and lost business.

“You have blocks and blocks of plywood. You have graffiti. You have an accumulation of damages that are unrepaired, an ongoing perception that coming downtown is not a safe place,” Hoan said.”

    Portlanders amused.

Reports say rental rates in Portland are down 6%. Portlanders amused.

  31. So Much For Subtlety

I am interested that no one has pointed out that there is no evidence of racism here at all. Sure, we would all like to think that the fine liberals of Portland are racists. They may well be.

But this is another unusually woke eight year old. So it is likely to be fake. And at worst, all that is being said is that a child wants to fit in. As children do. Not that anyone is racist. They are not old enough to understand racism yet.

  32. ” I later discovered that the 2010 census found Portland to be the whitest big city in the US. ”

She was surprised that her marriage was referred to as a “mixed marriage”?

Nobody would have thought twice about (or remarked upon) her marriage in a city like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles, or San Jose.

The idea that Portland is a big city is laughable

  33. Arkus in the back row

Its in the Guardian…. it never happened, kid never said it. The whole thing is a made up fantasy.
    She needs to seek help.

  34. “They are not old enough to understand racism yet.”

It hasn’t been taught to them yet.

Gamecock’s son started in parochial school. There were a few black kids. They were just kids. That changed radically when he started in government schools at age 12. Black kids were deemed very different and required different treatment. The notion that blacks needed special help was introduced by government. One obvious effect of this is that blacks believe they are different and need special treatment. Their psyche crushed by government. Which gives great pride to the Left. Cos they “care” more than the right.
