Berlin rent controls

….rent controls in Berlin have
borked the market. Supply down 41%, demand up 127%,

Result? Queues.

You’d think in a place where half the city had real and pure socialism that they’d understand all of this. But apparently it has to be taught, painfully, each generation again.

  1. “But apparently it has to be taught, painfully, each generation again.”
    Kipling understood:
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man—
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:—
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
    And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return![8]

  2. Government by wishful thinking.
A speciality of the Sage of Ely, but not unknown elsewhere.
Young people could be forgiven for not knowing better, but those in charge? It can only be ascribed to malice or stupidity. Either way, hangings too good for them.

  3. Bloke in North Dorset

    They haven’t finished yet:

“ The second stage of the German capital’s rent cap law has come into effect, meaning that thousands of Berlin landlords could be forced to reduce their rents. But the legal battle over the law is not yet over.

From November 23, landlords in the German capital must lower excessively high rents — that is, if they exceed a standardized limit by more than 20% — or face heavy fines. The German constitutional court dismissed the landlord associations’ attempts to halt the imminent reductions at the end of October.“

Slimy politicians taking advantage of the ignorance of youth?

And also ‘hidden rent’ whereby the difference between the fixed and market price is made up in cash.

  6. @Pcar Biden promises to “Provide every American city with 100,000 or more residents with high-quality, zero-emissions public transportation options through flexible federal investments with strong labor protections that create good, union jobs”

That “union jobs” thing pops up time and again. As does “putting right environmental and racial injustices”.

    America is fucked.

  7. I went to Berlin for the first time a few years back. The opera was so cheap that it paid for the whole jolly.

Anyhoo, it was a one-horse dorp. Compared to Lunnun, or even Paris, it was just so quiet. I quite liked it but I imagine that many of The Young would be bored to tears.

I went to Berlin a little more than a few years back. I was impressed. I did not like it as much as some other parts of the former DDR but it was still pretty good. A little too cosmopolitan and not Prussian enough for me. Some good museums. Good food – I like German food and German waitresses are infinitely better than the service you get in Paris. Even East German ones – they were still a bit Soviet when I was there.

What I really liked is Berlin is surrounded by lakes. I had never heard of them before. But they were really nice. Great for boating and swimming. With some good restaurants at most of those I went to.

So screw Paris. Much less London. I would rather spend my summer in the former DDR.

  9. After the rent controls of the 17th of June
The General Secretary of Die Linke (formerly known as PDS, formerly known as SED)
Made it known in the mainstream media
That all the problems were caused by the capitalist bourgeouise rentiers
Inviting the wrong class of worker to join the waiting list to live in an upscale chic groovy pad in Prenzlauer Berg where you could (until the west paid for it to be plastered 3 times) still see bullet holes in the wall
And in so doing had lost the confidence of Merkels’ Linke
And could only win it back
By increased efforts to recruit the right type of worker to live in desirable apartments close to the national capital
Would it not in that case be simpler
For the Government to dissolve the German people
And invite a new people to occupy said desirable city-centre apartments?

‘ Real rent control has never been tried!’

Sad but true. Very good though

  12. WTF have they done to Berlin? I was there when there two of them. The idea of a “quiet” Berlin’s impossible to imagine. This side of Checkpoint Charlie, anyway. Must be because the bloody Germans are running it now.
