You naughty, naughty, people you

Social media firms face multi-billion pound fines up to 10 per cent of their turnover for breaching Duty of Care laws, as ministers pledged there would be “no safe space online for horrors like child sexual abuse or terrorism”.

Unveiling the new Duty of Care in an article for The Telegraph, Oliver Dowden, the Culture Secretary, said the Government would also take powers to shut down firms that failed to remove child abuse, terrorism or suicide content from their sites by blocking their access to UK users.

You’ve been using that liberty of cyberspace to be free. We’d better put a stop to that.

Too many people – not just those in public life – continue to be bombarded by racism, misogyny and trolling on a regular basis.

Your freedom discomfits us rulers. Therefore you may not have that freedom any more.

Or, as we might observe, the kiddie fiddling stuff is just the excuse.

  1. Once again, I’m forced to ask myself what it is that differentiates a so-called Tory government from the left-wing Labour and LibDem opposition.

And I can’t seem to find anything.

  2. And the Royal Mail will be fined 10% of their turnover when somebody mails something horrid, and British Telecom will be fined 10% of their turnover when somebody says something horrid, and Chung Hwa will be fined 10% of their turnover when somebody scribbles something horrid…

    Oh, wait.

  3. “Your freedom discomfits us rulers.”

I remember 40-ish years ago when parliament was debating making CB radio legal in the UK, one peer in the Lords stood up and said words to the effect “we can’t have the British people able to communicate with anyone they like, where would it end?”.

  4. @JuliaM

I am assured the tories are far right baby eaters, even now. Any suggestion they have moved left is my far right stupidity. So I am told

  5. So Much For Subtlety

oo many people – not just those in public life – continue to be bombarded by racism, misogyny and trolling on a regular basis.

These are Tories. In the Torygraph. As they both once were.

I will happily give up the trolling on social media. If we are allowed a lot more mobs with pitchforks and hempen rope. Because I feel now is the time to buy futures in those stocks.

Pleased to see the Dutch protesting Wu Flu lockdowns. Almost made me feel European

  6. Well, it started off with child abuse and terrorism, but a short time later it’s “trolling”, defined by the Left as disagreeing with left-wingers or expressing opinions held by 95% of the UK population.

Not completely sure how UKGov is going to fine US companies 10% of their turnover, to be honest.

  7. The derision directed at the “Dr” in Dr Jill Biden was immediately described as misogyny. Why? Her sex played no role in the sneering.

  8. SMFS, a colleague this morning labelled the protesters as virus deniers and cranks.

Seems like one of the side-effects of Covid-19, whether you’ve had it or not, is that it brings out the fascist in people.

  9. FFS – do they really have a “Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport”? Is this Monty Python?

  10. @Henri Crun And quoting actual science with respect to WuFlu against the Narrative of the Day kills Granny…
Which, of course, you are actively participating in because you’re a Denying Wappie and generally Evil Bastard that kills puppies and eats kittens.

Of course, the people who shout loudest about even stricter lockdown here are also the first to explain why they should be exempt.. Doubly so if they also own plague rats..

  11. Predictable surprises.
What is it about motivations that the muppets in charge are unable to understand.
All this does is give yet another boost to VPNs, the crims are already on them and the law abiding will gradually shift to escape the great firewall of China.

Had a letter from my credit card company yesterday saying that they would no longer allow me to use my card for online gambling (not that I did, but principles…). I’m guess the next step will be to ban payments for VPN services through the banking system.

    also

“And, to make sure we do not impose unnecessary burdens on smaller, low-risk businesses, we have included exemptions that mean only three per cent of UK businesses fall within scope of this regulation. In doing so, we’re ensuring we protect people without compromising our freedoms.”

This one of those daft Government Is Doing Something laws, then. Facebook, Twitter and all that are mainstream and already do as much as possible to remove this stuff. The kids aren’t even on these places, because Facebook is for old people now. They’re on Discord, Kik, all sorts of web chat sites that are pretty racy and by the time some PR guy like Dowden gets to hear about them, they’ve already become boring, mainstream, and the kids are doing dirty stuff some other place.

Also, can we just stop pretending like 14 year olds wanking to titties is something new? We’ve had internet porn for over 20 years. Let’s stop acting like this actually causes much damage to teenagers, yeah?

And before internet porn, it was jazz mags being passed around the 3rd form.

Had to tear a strip off Rachel Sylvester (and her more egregious commenters) in The Times today. “Most right-wing Conservative government ever” – WTAF? The problem is that most of these never-Leavers are too thick to see past their own prejudice. The ‘logic’ runs: the only people who supported Brexit are thick, ‘far right’ racists (must be true because the Guardian and BBC never stop telling me so, just ignore the tacit support from Corbyn and Momentum – definitely thick and racist, but hardly ‘far right’), Boris supports Brexit (albeit reluctantly and marginally in reality), therefore the government is the most right-wing evah (completely ignoring the evidence of every single decision they’ve taken that isn’t EU-related)!

It’s remarkable how the simple act of losing a democratic vote has left so many (presumably intelligent, in at least some cases) people totally deranged. Don’t try to contemplate what goes on in their heads, because that way madness lies.

The ‘justification’ for the article, BTW? The Wellingborough Conservative Association newsletter (required reading in Downing Street, I’m assured) says that “there are lessons we can learn from Trump”. The horror, the horror!

  16. Won’t have time. Tories are toast. Just SJW commies wearing nothing but a Thatcher skin suit…..

Round 1 was Brexit /Trump a new hope
Round 2 is creepy weirdos currently in power strike back
Round 3 normals realise their political car is parked nowhere they left when they last paid attention to reality 30 years ago, return of the angry normal in their millions.

This only lasts until normals get really angry.

  17. An Oxygen larcenist PR drone “Tory” whose Wikipedia entry compares him to “Bad Al” Campbell – opines…

What an effing shower we’ve been saddled with…
