Spinsters

The word ‘spinster’ is still freighted with pity and misogyny, yet the number of women living this way is growing. Emma John says it’s time to reconsider what it means to be ‘never-married’

It’s been fairly common historically…..so the question becomes, growing from what number to which?

  1. I feel more sorrow for the spinsters of a century ago, whose men had been killed in the Great War, than for some self-absorbed twerp who writes for the Guardian.

The Guardian – where no complaint will ever be accompanied by a sense of proportion.

  2. “Never married” when applied to a chap is Telegraph code for batting for the other side.

I know quite a few women who have had children purposefully to raise them alone. A couple of them are our best friends, I have been tight lipped to them on my opinion of such a policy, but the missus and I considered it selfish and would tut loudly when we heard of some travail that had befallen either of them.

So you are sad if you are a crazy cat lady but you are not so bad if you are surrounded by other crazy cat ladies? How about not being a crazy cat lady?

Emma John says it’s time to reconsider what it means to be ‘never-married’

It means never being married. It always has. It always will. Usually insanity, anger, weeping and alcohol go along with it. That ain’t my fault. That comes with the territory. We do not pity them because they are a minority. We pity them because they are pitiable.

Or would be if we did not have a pretty good idea how women who write for the Guardian end up single.

  4. Can count the number of women friends I’ve made over the years on one hand. All are/were career women working in a predominately male environment, who eventually married in their 40s, to men that had failed first time around. None produced children. Everyone lived happily ever after.

  5. Like everyone else who wants to change what we call things because they think their version is prettier.

I suppose the one that annoys me most is changing AD to CE. I like to rummage through history books.

  6. Emma John says it’s time to reconsider what it means to be ‘never-married’

    Wrong question.
Should be reconsidering why this is a trend and what is causing it.

Because, shockingly, teaching all our young girls that they are the bestest eva, and should only be with the richest, handsomest, amazingist man in the world, who in all likelihood doesn’t exist, and under no circumstances settle for a decent bloke, because you’re worth it, is for some reason resulting a load of lonely, batshit crazy cat ladies.

  7. Perhaps it would work better for them if they told us in a more “woke” manner;

“I have unilaterally declared myself a knob-free zone”

    I’ll get my coat

  8. I suppose the one that annoys me most is changing AD to CE.

Yarp. Should be crucified, every one of them. There’s no such thing as a “common era” and never was, it’s simply a passive-aggressive attempt to erase Christ from his central place in Western history.

  9. RlJ, Boganboy:

Mibi, kibi, gibi are mine. I will never use ’em, and follow the rule that the SI prefixes are based on 2^10 rather than 10^3 when measuring data.

Happy to use octet instead of byte though. I’ve used bytes that aren’t eight bits.

Sounds like quite a lot of married women as well. 🙂

  11. “I suppose the one that annoys me most is changing AD to CE.”

I get my own back by pronouncing CE as Christian Era.

  12. . . . so the question becomes, growing from what number to which?

And from that, what is the maximum percentage nature will permit over the long term? The tendency will be bred out (in an ugly or less ugly manner – nature doesn’t care), so there must be some average upper limit.

  13. look if you’ve got 8 siblings, one becomes a nun/spinster, it’s no biggie. You do you girl. But let’s keep the eyebrow raising connotations shall we? because it is one of things that if everyone did it, well, things would be shit.

  14. PJF – I refer you to the Holy Bible in the original English:

“And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.”

It was goode enough for King Jamie. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  15. Some thought (backed with burnings*) that biblical translations from Latin were simply a passive-aggressive attempt to erase Christ from His central place in Western history.

    *of people, not books

  16. GMT to UTC in my case.

GMT and UTC are different measurements. It’s not surprising that computers use UTC as it’s basically monotonically increasing, but they need to keep adding leap seconds to keep in sync with reality. GMT is based on observations of the sun, so doesn’t need that kind of kludge.

the one that annoys me most is changing AD to CE

Whenever I see BCE or CE used I know that the author or speaker is a Woken SS twat, and therefore I do not need to read or listen further.

  17. PJF – idk, but I always assumed Popes and Jesuits were worldly enough to not necessarily believe all of their own propaganda. Not that it matters much if you’re being martyred.

  18. . . . I always assumed Popes and Jesuits were worldly enough to not necessarily believe all of their own propaganda.

A safe enough assumption. But they were certainly very concerned about the maintenance of their central place in Western history. The “salvation-only-through-Him-via-us” cult is brilliant (second only to “salvation-via-murder-rape-plunder”) and if they could have minimised the inevitable corruption it would likely still be central today.

  19. I don’t know why the cvnts bothered with the AD to CE change. Pretty soon we’ll be using AM and PM anyway

    After Mohammed and Pre Muhammed

  20. Really, why would anyone want to spend a lifetime with a girl who thinks Dickens is as good a writer as Miss Austen and Mr Plum?

  21. @Ottokring – is it worse for a child to be raised by one concerned and loving parent than to be raised by a pair of feckless idiots? Or to be raised by one parent after the father fucks off sharpish? Frankly any reproduction by middle class white people ought to be encouraged.

I saw a card in the supermarket the other day; it read: “It’s not drinking alone if you have a cat.” Which is sort of funny, but mainly tragic.

  22. Re: Emma John – I actually do sympathise. She seems to be a perfectly decent person and it is a shame that the idiocies of her feminist mother and brainwashing that a ‘career’ is what really matters has separated her from happiness. She would be much happier and more fulfilled married with a couple of kids. And that wouldn’t stop her from writing either.

As BoM4 points out on the wrong thread, she likes cricket so could easily find a chap via the game. She also writes about comic book nonsense so is adjacent to two large groups of single men. However I bet she’d reject comic book geeks or older cricket nerds because they aren’t the Mr Darcy the sisterhood says she deserves. Wrong, she should settle. Likewise the geeks and nerds need to turn off the porn, put down the fleshlight and engage with the real world.

  23. PJF – I dunno. I’m not a fatalist or nothing, but huge monolithic systems breaking up into factions is pretty much an inevitable thing that happens in history.

Yeah, but I pity the poor girl who has to pretend to be sexually excited by Mr Collins (who was NOT a sensible man) telling rambling-yet-pompous-yet-obseqious stories about Lady Catherine’s chimney.

Maybe if the sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, and dickheads tried NOT being boring and off-putting to women, our Guardianista heroine would be pregnant by now. I mean, it’s not that hard (said the actress to the bishop).

  24. I have come to the conclusion that the ideology which did the most long-term damage to the West in the 20th and 21st centuries wasn’t fascism, communism, or socialism but feminism; especially the current third wave variant. By convincing a generation of young women that they are better off becoming blue-haired harridans and dying alone instead of marrying and raising a family it has caused a demographic collapse in the developed nations.

  25. BiW: for some reason the Earth’s moment of inertia has reduced so it’s speeding up. So there’s a possibility that we may need to subtract a leap second for the first time since the system came into being.

  26. Have we been transfering significant mass off the planet? Do all those satellites in orbit and scrap vehicles left on other planets have that much effect?

  27. Bloke in China (Germany province)

“It means never being married. It always has. It always will. ”

You’re pretty optimistic, aren’t you, given the number of previously fixed and logical definitions that have changed just recently.

Surely the demand for legalised abortion has done as much if not more to reduce the population of the Western world? Thats still a result of feminism of course…….

  29. Curiously enough the number of babies aborted in the UK is very similar to the non-native population. Guess we did ‘need’ that immigration after all…

  30. BiW: for some reason the Earth’s moment of inertia has reduced so it’s speeding up. So there’s a possibility that we may need to subtract a leap second for the first time since the system came into being.

Interesting, didn’t know that! I bet that would cause a few interesting issues. It’s reminiscent of https://lwn.net/Articles/504658/

  31. I get my own back by pronouncing CE as Christian Era

That was the intention. It wasn’t an accident that it was BCE and CE. They could have made it without the C.

I don’t get the fuss about it. I have a Hindu colleague, and it is ridiculous to insist that not only does he use our dating system, not his equally old one, but we have to make sure that we put Christ in there as well just to rub it in. Especially since we got it wrong and Christ was born several years “before Christ”.

The ones that annoy me are books in English about Islamic topics that double date everything, so “AH” alongside the CE version. The whole point of going to CE is to avoid any offence, so adding a second date all the time is just making it take longer to read. Even Wikipedia isn’t that woke.

  32. “…for some reason the Earth’s moment of inertia has reduced…”

Apparently the day slows down ever so slightly in the northern hemisphere winter and spring due to the mass of water either lying as snow cover or impounded in reservoirs. As the water is released and eventually finds it way into the ocean, the earth’s rotation speeds up ever so slightly to maintain angular momentum. The counter-effect of snow / water mass in the southern hemisphere is less pronounced, since there is less surface area, and so less snow or water affected.
    Or so I’m told.

I agree. But Mr Collins is an outlier – not a real person (even in terms of being fictional) but a point Jane Austen is trying to make.

“Maybe if the sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, and dickheads tried NOT being boring and off-putting to women, our Guardianista heroine would be pregnant by now. I mean, it’s not that hard (said the actress to the bishop).”

I disagree. I do not think there is anything wrong with the men of the West. Certainly not the sportos, motorheads, geeks, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, and dickheads. Maybe the ones into Japanese anime. But not anyone else. Western men are about as good as man can possibly get. Compare with the men of anywhere else. These are just well rounded people with interests outside work.

The problem with women. Who gives less (and are proud of being miserly about what they give) and demand more. As such some number of them price themselves out of the market. Women insist they won’t make men breakfast or iron their shirts but demand the men do more of the house work? Well fine. If they like the spineless wonders that will accept such terms.

And the evidence is that they do not. Was it Jessica Valenti who settled for a feminist man and now writes articles about how the way he irons her shirts makes her want to commit murder?

Meantime Sean Connery, an open and unrepentant wife beater, was voted as the sexist man of the century at the age of 69. The Guardian sent some girl to interview Burt Reynolds and she was so excited she almost wet herself. Also an unrepentant wife beater.

The problem with Western men, in so far as they have any problems, is that they listen to women and try to give them what they say they want. They should be themselves.

MC January 18, 2021 at 3:18 pm – “Wrong, she should settle.”

No, she should not. Every man deserves a wife who loves him. Settling means cheating of the one big chance he has to be happy. It is fraud. Worse than that. Cheating some dweeb of his chance to eventually find a plainer, perhaps, but loving wife is grossly unfair.

“Likewise the geeks and nerds need to turn off the porn, put down the fleshlight and engage with the real world.”

Western men do not have a problem. Yes, they should give up on the porn. But they have improved markedly from the Sixties. Are women happy about that? They should be. But they aren’t. They wish for, well fuck knows what they wish for. Who cares? I expect they would prefer Gene Hunt to Sam Tyler.

  35. A Spinster who mourns the loss of a love all her life has my sympathies.

A Spinster who is thrown off the cock carousel at 35 and whines about there being no good men is a creature of contempt who deserves her cats and mental health problems.

    MGTOW

  36. And the only thing more contemptible than a post wall slut who has sat on miles of cock demanding a man marry her, is worthless men demanding that other men ‘man up’ and become Capt Save-a-ho because somewhere on the internet a Woman is mad she is having to face some consequences.
