Woes

But the film’s production team has drawn criticism from Southeast Asian viewers for casting East Asian actors in many of its most important roles, rather than Southeast Asian actors.

They are, umm, actors, you know, doing pretend and made up stuff?

It’s also a cartoon, meaning that slanty eyes and all that aren’t all that important.

An interesting question – at what level of granularity is this supposed to work? If a Korean (as here) should not play a Malay then, well, should it be OK for a Cockney to play a Mummerset? A Bronxite a Brooklynite?

The claim here is that East Asian and South East Asian is too high a level of that granularity to be acceptabl;e substitution. So, what’s the acceptable level?

And no, some level of “culture” isn’t enough. Given the differences in such that would mean no prole could ever play a bourgeois given the cultural differences….

  1. No gays should be allowed to play straights. That would open up the luvvy trade for young straights.

  2. This is just about people looking for an excuse to knock Disney. “Criticism from Southeast Asian viewers” means they found a dozen grumpy, boring twats on Twitter or some pointless university department who are obsessed with this nonsense.

Well, yes. No-one cared that James Hunt and Niki Lauda were played by an Australian and a German in Rush.

  3. ‘A black playing Anne Boleyn’

Yeap, funny how these situations are acceptable but the reverse is not. See also The Great (currently airing on C4), which has black and asians playing 17th century Russians.

I’m tempted to go to the next London Comic-con dressed as Black Panther and see what the reaction is!

Oh good. Disney getting a taste of its own woke medicine works for me. Perhaps (pah) it’ll learn it can never be woke enough, and go back to making stuff for its paying customers instead of catering to weirdos who hate it anyway.

  5. Danish luvvies should do well out of productions of Hamlet, and Scots out of Macbeth. But not Lowland Scots of course.

  6. I find it funny that “east-asia” is really more a gob of Siberia, north of China, and arguably Japan.

All the whingeing is about stuff that’s clearly all south-east Asia anyway…

They’ll tell you ‘no’ but they’re lying racists. The ultimate end-state is exactly this. They’ll pretend they’re ‘reasonable’ and it ‘won’t get that far’ and you’re doing a ‘slippery slope fallacy’.

But anyone who’s watched the last 10 years knows that this is the only place this sort of bullshit can end up.

These are the people who were complaining about Scarlett Johansen playing a cyborg with a full-body prosthesis because the character’s ethnicity was supposed to be Japanese – ignoring that in the source material she’s in a body that is supposed to be common and not stand out. And then these people were talking about Chinese and Korean actresses that should have been given the role.

As if the Japanese would have appreciated having a Chinese actress in the role over an American.

  8. the film’s production team has drawn criticism from Southeast Asian viewers

More like criticism from a handful of neurotic Yanks with Southeast Asian heritage. I bet people in SE Asia largely don’t give a shit. Of course there’s cunts everywhere. However, the only time I really see this particular type of racial neurosis and posturing in Asia is when the CCP and its mouthpieces are doing it, because they know it gets traction in the west, especially the US.

The problem is not with Asians, or SE Asians but with the cunts who write for Vox and its miserable, poisonous ilk. Disney is no better.

  9. No remake of The Greatest Story Ever Told then. Can’t find a Son of God, apparently….

  10. The writer does not appear to be south-east Asian. She therefore cannot possibly have any relevant thoughts on the subject. So please do shut up.
