More than a third of the vast floating platforms of ice surrounding Antarctica could be at risk of collapsing and releasing “unimaginable amounts” of water into the sea if global temperatures reach 4C above pre-industrial levels, UK scientists say.
Researchers from the University of Reading said that limiting the temperature rise to 2C could halve the area at risk and avoid a drastic rise in sea levels.
Well, actually, not all that interesting. Because we’re never going to get to 4 oC, we’ve already done more than enough to avoid that.
Yes, yes, yes, I know, all codswallop anyway – but even using the usual COP and RCP and all that stuff, we’ve still done enough.
They really don’t understand that floating ice displaces its own weight in water, do they?
Nor do they understand the ice is flowing, just not at a human timescale.
I just came here to say that floating ice doesn’t change the water level when it melts, but abacab got here first.
“They really don’t understand that floating ice displaces its own weight in water, do they?”
Which is why “debating” Climate Science was always a mistake. Now look where it’s got us. Trying to argue with it validates its existence. Same’s true of the transexuals & the whole of Woke.
“Which is why “debating” Climate Science was always a mistake”
More to the point, its why ‘they’ don’t allow debate by claiming the science is settled.
Researchers from the University of Reading said
Fuck off.
And besides going from -30 to -26 deg is not going to melt the ice cap.
Anyway other reasons why we don’t want the temperatures to rise:
The Krynoid will germinate and take over the world.
Alien versus Predator will defrost and start fighting across the world.
But we DO want the temps to rise so that The Thing from Another World doesn’t go back to sleep and we can hunt it down.
Dilemmas, eh ?
The floating ice around Antarctica is, indeed, floating, but if it were all to melt*, that would greatly accelerate the run-off from the glaciers, which would eventually raise sea levels.
* it won’t (any time soon)
Ah, but if we assume that temperatures will rise by 10c if we don’t “do something” and also assume that this will be a bad thing then we have PROVED that we must “do something”.
– They really don’t understand that floating ice displaces its own weight in water, do they?
To be fair, they don’t claim otherwise. Not covered in Tim’s quote is that it’s the land ice flowing into the sea (absent the “collapsed” sea ice “buffer”) that will add the water.
‘… , we’ve already done more than enough to avoid that.‘
Have we? How do we know? And if we really have, and therefore can, we can also command the tides to go back.
Floating ice melts because the water temperature is above freezing – not air temperature – so icebergs, melt bottom up not top down. You’d think ‘scientists’ would know that.
Glaciers too because of the heat generated by the weight of ice pressing down melt bottom up, and the slush which develops underneath provides lubricant over which they slide on the way to the rivers and seas where they melt in contact with water.
Surely rising sea levels are a good thing as that provides more space for fish, whales and dolphins.
These environmentalist are so human-selfish.
“More to the point, its why ‘they’ don’t allow debate by claiming the science is settled.”
It’s another aspect of “You won’t get someone to understand something when their job depends on them not understanding” principal. Why I can’t understand Tim’s continual promoting of a carbon tax. The environmentalist lobby aren’t interested in a sensible economic solution to a supposed climate problem. They despise our technophile civilisation & want to bring it down. “Climate emergency” is simply a convenient justification. Government would just see it as a convenient revenue earner in pursuit of plucking the goose with the least squawking. No politicians care about the future. They want to buy votes now.
So there’s no point in debating anything with anyone. Even the marginally sensible like George Monbiot. The correct response would be kick him until he’s soggy & limp & if he survives the experience, let him crawl away & hide, praying he never gets a repeat lesson. The rest should be dragged from their beds at dawn & shot in front of their families as unredeemable. The idea that this is some sort of civilised university debating society should be abandoned. Even universities don’t do that now. You’re in a war & currently on the losing side.
What is their plan if global temperatures rise 4 degrees above pre-industrial levels due to non-human forces?
“….platforms of ice surrounding Antarctica could be at risk of collapsing……”
with the emphasis on ‘could’.
On the other hand, researchers at the University of Reading ‘could’ get jobs in McDonalds if they were only more intelligent.
The environmentalists will be as satisfied with submission to all of their current demands to exactly the same extent the Palestinians will be satisfied with withdrawal to 1967 borders.
“What is their plan if global temperatures rise 4 degrees above pre-industrial levels due to non-human forces?”
That is impossible!! Man can only be the cause!!
Life is simple when you ignore a couple billion years where Mankind could not possible be the cause of any upheavals , because we simply didn’t exist…
Although I’ve heard Idjits of a Green Inclination proclaiming Man must have caused both the last ice-age, and the end of it. Usually within a sentence distance….
You should look at a website called ‘Extinction Clock’. It lists all the wrong predictions of imminent disaster. I, for one, have been waiting for the Maldives to become another Atlantis, for years, with no sign that it will happen soon.
