Trump was a super-spreader of this Anglo-Saxon variant of populism. He promised to help the poor but actually helped the rich. His actions were inseparable from the interests of his own businesses, party donors and a wider oligarchy. True, the US economy did well until the Covid pandemic hit, but there was no substantial economic or social “levelling up”.

Lowest poverty rate in two generations. Lowest unemployment rate since the 1970s. Lowest gap between black and white unemployment rate since whenever.

True, attributing all that to Trump alone would be more than a bit odd. But still….

  1. Wages rising fastest for the lowest paid, the only President to leave office poorer than when he entered it, and not to draw a salary.
And didn’t feel the need to surround Washington permanently with razor wire or have troops permanently occupy the capital for fear of the populace.

  2. Usually, if you squint really hard, you can interpret evidence/data from the left’s perspective and see where they are coming from. This time not at all.

He promised to help the poor but actually helped the rich.
As Tim says: Lowest poverty rate in two generations. Lowest unemployment rate since the 1970s. Lowest gap between black and white unemployment rate since whenever.

Left office poorer than he went in. Did not draw a salary.

    , party donors
Hated by every major corporation and bank in the country. Major historic boogie-men for the left like the Koch brothers hated him

    and a wider oligarchy
Hated by every RINO (i.e. all other Republican party members)

True, the US economy did well until the Covid pandemic hit
It took the entire force of the left and their economic sabotage via lockdowns and riots to revert Trump’s economy back to the same level as the peak of Obama’s

but there was no substantial economic or social “levelling up”
As Tim says: Lowest poverty rate in two generations. Lowest unemployment rate since the 1970s. Lowest gap between black and white unemployment rate since whenever.

  3. “this Anglo-Saxon variant of populism.”

Maybe we could try some of the African variants.

  4. Maybe we could try some of the African variants.

    Minneapolis did.

Rampant destruction, and ritual sacrifice of the white man to appease the gods.

  5. Yesterday, for reasons to dull to explain, I listened to some Canadian CBC radio.
Their news led with Liz Cheney’s deposing, caused, CBC said, because she opposed Trump’s “lies” about the election and Jan 6th riot.

I mean even the BBC daren’t… Oh whats the point…

  6. Saint Maggie famously noted that the Left would prefer that the poor remain poor if helping them meant that the rich became richer.

  7. On the Guardian website this morning I clicked on the story about the murdered PCSO Julia James. It carried a photo of the victim but not of the chap charged with her murder. Why might that be?

  8. @Dearieme

The Metro carries a long distance photo of him.

I guess the BBC’s line here is similar to their approach to reporting incidents of people of no particular appearance screaming “Allahu Akbar” and running up and down the high street stabbing every white person they can find before blowing themselves up, which are described as having ‘no indications as yet of being terrorist related’.

  9. President Biden now has four years to prove that actually giving people decent healthcare, education, social security and job prospects will prevail over the very real emotional power of nationalist, populist narratives.

Or he could just continue the Democrats scheme to import a sufficient number of Asians and Central Americans to make the votes of White Americans irrelevant.

  10. If they had any actual data on their side, they wouldn’t have to waste so much time coming up with all that emotional grandstanding.

    The Left reeeeeeks of desperation.

By the way, all those potential Amazon employees in New York, and all those Keystone workers would like a word with you democrats about “helping the poor.”
