But his name’s in foreign – how could the editor tell if it was the right way round?

The screen-facing camera on many (all?) smartphones inverts as if looking into a mirror.

Interesting. I was going by his right eye (his actual right, which would normally be on our left when looking at him but is on our right in the inverted view – Jesus) which looks offset.
However, with appropriate apologies to Tim, I withdraw the mirror selfie excuse for the Times man. The picture is a crop of a wider view which clearly shows he’s not holding a phone or camera. I suspect it’s still a selfie though, with the camera/phone propped up on a counter top or something. The nutter’s quite fond of taking pictures of himself.
