Weird

Here:

Clive of India was no sociopathic thug, but a British self-made success story

They say that like there’s something wrong with being a sociopathic thug. Which is something Brits have been notably good at over the centuries.

  1. Clive of India was no sociopathic thug, but a British self-made success story

I must be misremembering my history of the empire then (taught before it got wokified), because describing Clive as a sociopath seems pretty accurate in my book. The shopkeepers of Market Drayton who were subject to his little gang of teenage thugs protection racket would probably also have agreed.

“Opportunist chancer with a taste for violence. Had balls, got shit done” also works.

  2. Thanks for the info. My only acquaintance with Clive is Fortescue’s History of the British Army, which is rather more polite.
